Introductionwritten by Basic
The purpose of this thread is to hand out knowledge that makes posting and browsing on this forum of better quality for the members who are eager to contribute ()/lurk () as much as they can. I wont start off with a massive thread, but rather let it evolve as other people than me also come with their own contributions of tips and tricks. A thread by the forum community, for the forum community.
Don't just put a post saying "Thats cool"written by Blubex.
If you're going to post, think out your post and actually add some thought.
"I really like the fading, but the text could be nicer." Even a one line post can add contribution.
Don't negatively contributewritten by Blubex.
If you're going to criticize someone's work or demeanor, don't just say "U suck and your work is terrible."
Add reasons or some detail as to why so. DO NOT flame or insult the person. That WILL get you banned.
Don't post already covered informationwritten by Blubex., edited by Basic
Unless it's a debate, you won't add anything to a thread if you're posting information that already have been posted. When you're not using the "Quick Reply" to post, you can press the preview button to see if somebody have posted while you were writing your post. That way you'll know in beforehand if you are about to add nothing to a thread or actually be adding something.
Remember to report!written by Basic
There are so many wrong things posted on the forum that can only be handled by a forum moderator and we can't possibly have time to manually find them all, so be sure that you know the rules stickied in every section and remember to report! While I'm at it, make sure to ease the work for us moderators by really explaining what the problem is, we'll love you for it! <3
BBCodewritten by Basic
A good start for posting would be the BBCode page of this forum, which handles the functions of these buttons in the posting interface.
View postwritten by Basic
Found here. When you click this icon, you'll be directed to the first new post that you haven't read in a topic.
Found here. A unread post, when you click this icon, you'll be directed to the post.
Found at the same place as and also functions the same. A post you have read.
With this you can browse the forum faster and use the directional links to direct other people to certain posts.
Anchorswritten by Basic
Currently it's kind of a hidden feature but it's there in the forum-BBCode. It's hidden because there are no buttons that add the code so you have to add it yourself. Anchors work in a way that if you click a anchor-link, you'll be directed to the anchor. This works well in big posts like this one. Example | Explanation
Edit Postwritten by Blubex.
Don't double post, just edit! It's located here in any of your posts in open threads, and you can use it to correct spelling, add to your post, and more. Make sure not to double post!
Private Messagewritten by Basic
With PMs, you can create private threads for a group to up to 5 people. Discuss in secrecy, or use this instead of derailing threads with off-topic questions to one member. It's there for a reason and for that you should use it.
Multiquotingwritten by Basic
When you have multiple posts to answer, you can easily multiquote with a feature which you can only use when writing new posts that isn't made with the "Quick Reply". Below the area where you write your new post, you'll see the posts that have been made earlier than your post which all have a qoute-button located here. The quote will show up where your are writing, so make sure that you don't mess up your post when using this feature!

This feature is for hiding text that will only be visible if you hover your mouse over the grey frame it's in:
Resize Imagewritten by Basic
Citriqsquid is on a go with useful new features on the forum, and with this nifty BBCode you can automatically shrink the size of a big image to a width of 600px (although max visible width is 668px), with the smaller image being a link to the bigger image:

Shortcut Keyswritten by apocalypse_r
I just discovered an undocumented feature of the forum. or at least one that this thread does not mention.
While using the post editor, the following shortcut keys are available -
Alt+b - bold
Alt+i - italic
Alt_u - underline
Alt+q - quote
Alt+c - code
Alt+l - list
Alt+o - ordered list
Alt+w - url
Alt+p - img
Alt+t - list item
Alt+k - save post
Alt+s - submit post
AdvancedSearchwritten by Gachl
I've come to the conclusion that the search throws useless stuff in your face when you search for something. This is because this forum is way too large and has way too many topics.
This explains how the Advanced Search can be used to improve your results:
[*:2we1xo0l]Most of the time the stuff that you're looking for mentioned in the first post of each topic, so there's no need to search other posts that might be off topic. This will prevent false positives (and speed up the search).
[*:2we1xo0l]Displaying the results as posts (default) is aweful, you'll have a hard time finding the right result. Instead displaying results as threads will show you only the thread title, just like browsing the forum. This will help you finding stuff you really want.
The search bar is evil, use the advanced search and help yourself and the community!

FastestFoxwritten by Basic
The ultimate add-on for lurking the forums, it lets you browse the forums with ease as it loads the next page when you reach the bottom of the one you are on. It also has a lot of other handy features, for example the automatic copy-on-select feature and a popup bubble for faster searching. Firefox | Chrome | Picture
Image Zoomwritten by Basic
You know those posts with images that are too big for the forums? With this tool, you can change the size of the image directly with your mouse, just hold the right mouse button and scroll when you point your cursor at the image! Firefox
ZScreenwritten by atokniro http://code.google.com/p/zscreen/
ZScreen is a program that allows for simple screenshot taking and uploading.
On the press of one button, ZScreen can take a screenshot and upload the image to any of the supported sites, and place the link in your clipboard. With ZScreen it is possible to take a window shot, which shows just the window you have active, and a crop shot, which allows you to choose a specific area of the screen to be uploaded, all on top of the full screenshot uploading function.
A full list of supported services is on the linked website
Pixlr Grabberwritten by Basic
This add-on for Firefox works like ZScreen, which atokniro explained in the entry over this one, but with more options on what do with the image and it's just limited to the browser window. Link | Example
Linkificationwritten by Basic
A handy little add-on for Firefox which converts plaintext links into clickable links. Link

Whoever it was who stickied this thread, thank you! I've updated the OP with a new section called "Browser Add-ons", and I plan to add a little "To do"-list tomorrow. It will be useful to tell people about stuff they can do to contribute to this thread, and of course, contributions doesn't have to be things listed in there.
Basic, I sent you new articles via PM. That said, maybe add a topic on PMs?
Thank you! I added everything except promoting "ninja'd" posts (it's still about posting already covered information) and the article on double posting (it was a continuation of another article). I can write something about PMs, that it works like small personal topics where you decide the participants.
Also, what I added was a tip about unnecessary posting in "Forum Manners" and "Edit Post" in "Forum Features".
I didn't do the to-do list yesterday, but I'll try to work on it today.
I'm double posting to tell about the update I did to the post, and I hope that is a good reason enough for the moderators for me to do this. Plus that it was a few days ago since I made that last post.
Thank you Blubex for showing your interest in this thread. I hoped for more people to write here but I got disappointed, but still I'm thankful to you Blubex.
I've updated the OP with tips and tricks in the form of PMs (private threads for groups up to 6 members, yourself included), Silk Icon Index (a great library of informative and clean-looking icons) and Image Zoom (the Firefox-addon which lets you resize images with your mouse).
Anchors are rather confusing, I can't seem to get them to work. Mind explaining?
[goto=AnchorFarDown]Link to anchor[/goto]
This code creates a link to an anchor named "AnchorFarDown", and it's only useful if you have something between the brackets to click on. You can use BBCode (images, bigger text, italic etc.) for the link.
This code creates an anchor named "AnchorFarDown", and the area between the brackets can be empty (but mostly anchors direct you to titles, so put the title between the brackets). Be sure to have the same name in the anchor and the link, otherwise it wont work!
I've made a new article about multiquoting. It's a useful forum feature for answering several posts at once.
I'm planning on making the section titles look better, as in replacing them with images of text, but I need help in which font to use. Any idea on a good & free font? You can search on Fontsquirrel and Dafont, or any other site which hosts free fonts. Thank you! :biggrin.gif:
