The Meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything.
Other side of the galaxy
3,522 users online, but only 187 of these are registered members, a far cry from September 25, 2014, which had 34,329 users online.
All but two of these are server related, in fact, you will mostly only see server content when looking at the recent activity page.
I'm just wondering if these forums are dead because are there very few people outside those the server section of the forums who active, or is even the server section of the forums inactive, or are these forums just extremely boring?
Things are even worse than you think; even before the recent purge of EU users the forums had been losing threads and posts, making it impossible to measure activity, as I'd done before to show just how much they have declined over the years:
This was for the Survival Mode section, the most popular section with actual discussion (as opposed to the server section, which is mostly just applications to join a server), but most other sections had similar patterns (I used the Wayback Machine to get these stats, based around mid-October, the time I'd made this).
As mentioned here, I think this is inexplicable given how much the popularity of the game has increased since 2012, and the Minecraft subreddit has significantly increased in activity (where I now spend most of my time, more due to being forced since I much prefer the forums; if you make a post on Reddit it will likely be seen by a handful of people and forgotten after a few hours unless you are lucky enough, and even then you rarely see any form of long-term discussion, and it is hard to post anything that isn't just text; and forget about anything like a journal for a world, they even lock threads after a while so you can't even maintain anything long-term).
Note that all of this happened long before anything like the Twitch merger (October 2017; since then and prior to the EU purge the change in threads/posts was negative).
Also, I find it extremely odd that hundreds of thousands of new members have signed up on these forums so far this year (currently there are 5,403,580 members, compared to 5,335,781 a month ago - a gain of 67,799 in just one month; near the beginning of the year there were 5,070,389 members, a gain of 333,191), yet most of them seem to have only registered, not actually posted anything, I also have quite a few followers who have never posted, or even logged in again after the day they registered (for example). I've had a forum admin tell me that most members only browse the forums (before the EU purge there were an average of 6 posts per member, and one thread for every two) but there is definitely something going on when you look at the ratio of new members to activity.
