I'm not saying all users, but many of the people on this forum are really immature and have very low post quality. This might be because of all the little kids wanting to post here on this forum.
Rules are too strict and anti-Internet
We have a rule against profanity - really? Some people say it is not needed, but yes, when somebody reads your opinion he/she would feel your opinion or message more strongly if you put in a strong word. The reason that people even use these "expletives" is because they sound much better. Words like "crap" or "heck" don't sound pleasant at all when someone says it or reads it. Now this might sound a little weird to you at first, but hopefully you get what I mean by this.
This forum also prohibits you to voice your opinion about someone or even slightly insult them. That is completely anti-internet. You would get an infraction for even calling somebody an idiot. It is the INTERNET. A 6 year old kid would probably read these rules, and think, "YES! Finally a place where I can't get insulted no matter how poorly I post!" There are many people on this site that have a really poor post quality even if they are not breaking the rules. I've seen many users constantly post things that don't make any sense, or so poorly format their posts that it hurts to read them. There is often no way to tell someone that the posts they make are horrible, other than insulting them. I once told someone that judging from their post quality it's pretty obvious he was a little kid, and then I got an infraction. These rules would make more and more immature kids to come to this forum, and would make intentional trolls want to come here since they can't get insulted or called as a troll.
I understand that the owner of this forum has the right to make his own rules, but I'm just voicing my opinion so that he would consider reworking them to make this place more mature.
The immaturity of the people on this forum
I understand that every community has their share of people that don't make the best posts, but coming from more mature forums such as Kongregate or IGN or City-Data, this forum tends to have the most arrogant childish posts.
We've got people making suggestions that have been suggested more than there are stars in the sky, and I constantly see people making threads that are just totally pointless or unreadable. And many of the users here tend to overuse annoying symbols such as XD or outdated words. It's not even funny to read those types of posts.
I'm not trying to troll here, I'm just showing how this community is really not doing well right now.
Probably not. You have to sign up with an email, which you have to be 13 to get. And you might say "oh, they probably used their parents email" and really, who wants email notifications from something they don't even do?

It being the internet doesn't mean you have to swear or insult someone. I haven't insulted anyone here, and I haven't swore in a very long time. I don't think a post with swearing in it is any more important or significant than one without, and I think posts where you feel you must insult the other person are significantly less important than the ones that don't. It isn't anti-internet.
How is it more "mature" to insult someone because you disagree with them? How is it more mature to have to swear because you don't have the vocabulary not to? And how are either of those important to a site for a game that attracts young people as well as "mature" people?

A younger person than you may not have an account, but that doesn't mean they don't use the site as a resource in some way. Minecraft attracts many people, both young and old, and what good reason is there to allow swearing an insults that aren't necessary, but may prevent a child from being comfortable reading/using this site just so that people can swear and insult each other?

I don't think people who swear don't have the vocab to do otherwise. Heck, i'm in sixth grade and have an 11th grade vocab and .. i do what the rules forbid. Then again, its not like i do it on a regular basis

The point is that swearing is not necessary to do, and the fact it does offend some users, especially younger ones, or causes parents to not allow their younger children to view this site is why it is banned here. What is 1 good reason swearing should be allowed, knowing that it will cause any amount of people to be uncomfortable or incapable of using this site, even if it is to simply view pictures of people's builds in the Show Your Content section or read the News posts made by Sacheverell? What is provided by swearing that is valuable enough to tell those people that they are less important than a few specific words?
In my house, I swear. I curse a lot, there probably isn't a day that goes by where I don't. Why? The people around me aren't bothered by it and I normally do it when I react to something and don't think about what I'm saying first. When I'm with my friend and their young child, I always hold my tongue. He likes playing minecraft and likes looking at pictures and videos of what people did in minecraft. Why should he be subjected to insults and swearing just so you can swear or "do what the rules forbid"?
So again, what good reason is there to allow swearing at the cost of making the site uncomfortable or unusable for some?

I agree. I think that even if you are trying to express your own opinions, you shouldn't have to swear to convey a stronger message.

So let's say there's this kid who decides to join the forum and becomes a regular. He is very immature however, and constantly makes stupid suggestions such as flying witches or stuff like that. He also makes comments that don't make sense and makes threads celebrating his accomplishments that are pointless. He also asks ppl to join his tiny server. Overall, his post quality sucks. And there's only so much you can do with ignoring people. How would you get him to improve his ways instead of insulting him?
If I had a choice I would probably curse and tell him harshly to stop posting crappy suggestions and completely pointless comments, but unfortunately that would result in an infraction.
People have been saying that these rules would make more little kids join this forum. That is actually mostly bad for this site. Even if it might populate this forum more since parents would allow their kids to participate here, it will also let in a bunch of minds that haven't quite matured yet. That is why post-2012 post quality has died down and we've been getting worse and worse threads. It is a shame that the nowadays the admins only care about member-count and post-count instead of post quality.

I'd reply to the content of his posts in the cases of the bad suggestions/threads pointing out the issues, report his posts that are off-topic/don't make sense or threads that are spam, especially if he's requesting people to join his server in unrelated topics, and if I was getting too annoyed dealing with his posts, I wouldn't reply. Really not that hard at all. Get a job where you have to deal with people who don't know how to do their job telling you how to do yours, and you have to listen because they're your boss's boss. Let's see how long you're employed if you insult and swear at that person.
If I had a choice I would probably curse and tell him harshly to stop posting crappy suggestions and completely pointless comments, but unfortunately that would result in an infraction.
Good thing you don't have your way then, because that'd make for a poor community if everyone swore and insulted everyone that annoyed them.

Well, this isn't at all the case. Most people that visit the site do so as a guest, so just because we don't allow swearing means that everyone is going to be sub 10 years old with immature minds, but it does mean that there are several that are reading the threads. It isn't about "getting little kids to join this site", it's about allowing every person, no matter their background, age, or maturity, to be comfortable viewing threads on this site without having to worry about offensive content.
Post quality has gotten worse? Looks about the same to me since 2010. There is always a mixture of high quality posts and low quality posts. I remember when there was a chat thread full of spam, nearly every popular thread had someone trying to insert swear words because it makes them look cool and angry, and when there were vicious members insulting anyone who disagreed with them or annoyed them. Those weren't quality posts, and those were common pre-2012.
It isn't about member count or post count, at all. It's about the comfort of people to use this site safely.
We also don't allow a whole bunch of other things that many people view as "not so bad." Like porn, gore, spam (both advertisements and '+1" posts), harassment, death threats, and many other things that are common on the internet, and those are done for pretty much the same reason that swearing and insulting others are not allowed.
I'll ask you what I ask everyone when this topic comes up.
What value does swearing or insulting other members have that makes it more important than allowing people to comfortably use this site? Do you really think if you insult someone they're going to pay any attention to what you say, or are they going to be more likely to either just get mad at you or ignore you? Why should we tell people that aren't comfortable with swearing or insulting if it isn't necessary to do? If it is, where in this post should I have inserted swearing or insults directed at you, because I don't see any?
I can add very little to what Beltir and Rakanoth have said; they've put it very, very well. I do want to quote one of Rakanoth's posts for emphasis:
If people were allowed to swear and insult each-other, you definitely wouldn't be rid of all the kids, only the most sensitive ones or the ones who are overprotected. In fact, you'd be welcoming the edgier, more disrespectful bunch of them, all while also welcoming a plethora of trolls, flamers and all manner of condescending people who'd be able to do their thing without consequence. How, exactly, is this an improvement?
Exactly. To generalize, if the forums permitted people to act like jerks toward other members, we would have more jerks and fewer other members. And the last thing we need (the last thing any forum needs) is more jerks!
And from trollsack's original post:
The reason that people even use these "expletives" is because they sound much better.
Actually ... no. There is no reason that "snert" sounds any better than "blorg" either. They use them because they're taboo. If "snert" is a forbidden, "edgy" word, they use it to show that they're tougher and kewler than people who just use "blorg". Or at least, that's how they want to present themselves.
Of course, the flaw in that is that a parrot can (and generally does) learn those words. A computer can be programmed to throw them in at random, and there are times in some of the things I've read that I think one has been. One particular word can be so many different categories of words that it may as well be "smurf" ... and is used like it. So how is it different, then, from "smurf"? A moment's thought shows that in fact it isn't, except that particular string of text or phonemes is forbidden and "smurf" is not. As a result, it carries the additional meaning "I disrespect you." But I can say that without breaking a single forum rule, and without sounding like a parrot or a 5-year-old. Anyone who can't isn't showing off their toughness by using some particular word, they're showing off their limitations by not being able to express their opinion without it. The problem is the range of their vocabulary, not the limitations of the rules.
To me, it sounds like you don't really disagree about the rules, but about the immature little kids. The great thing about being on the internet is that you don't have to interact with the people you don't like. In my opinion these forums, for the most part, have a pretty mature community. Also, it's not just little kids (or their parents) that can't tolerate swearing - there are a lot of sensitive people who don't like to see rude posts.

Wow great....I just can't stand it. I got another damned stupid infraction a few days ago for "flame baiting" because I "insulted" someone's spelling of durability.
I mean guys, this is a gaming forum. Not a super duper formal forum. At least some freedom of speech should be allowed.
