I am personally not happy about it, and I think it was a mistake. News and Science are big things in todays society, preventing people from talking about it just seems... wrong. Philosophy is also pretty important. Politics is controversial in nature, so it probably should have had its own section. I was wondering if anyone else agreed with me.

RIP: Politics, Philosophy, News, and Science
You were a good section.
Too much heated disagreement for a supposedly family friendly forum about minecraft. Plus lets be honest there wasn't much news or science or philosophy beyond "there is/isn't a god" there, it was all just political and religious discussion. And any news or science that was posted there would quickly be derailed into a political or religious argument. And no one's views were ever changed, so each discussion ended up just being "i'm right, here's why with statistics and articles I googled", and then "no I'm right, here's opposite statistics and articles I googled". And so on for pages and pages.

That doesn't mean it couldn't have been improved.
It was my favorite subforum. I really enjoyed it. I'm really let down by this.

You are obviously going to get 'heated disagreement' when the section has DEBATE in it. Just because most of it was Jesus jibber jabber doesn't mean it was bad. I never went into that section but sometimes JUST SOMETIMES I'd go in there and find some news. And now we can't post news anymore.

Well yeah, but the debate was the same people with the same views saying the same arguments over and over. I was very active here 1-2 years ago, and when I came back PPNS was no different. Still the same basic topics, many of the same people, and the only things ever being dicussed were guns, religion, and socialism/communism/US hating. It gets old aver 3+ years guys, find SOMETHING else to debate please. But that never happened. The arguments were all the same, it got very boring and repetitive. Is debate and discussion good? Yes. Is posting the same exact stuff over and over for 3+ years without much variety good for anyone? No that's a waste of the forums resources, and I can see why they shut it down, especially with how totally unrelated to minecraft all of it was.

Isn't that what a discussion section is for? I'm sorry, but being moderate does not make you enlightened in your views. A discussion section is meant for people to argue their ideas, and keeps those sort of topics out of other areas of the forum where they don't belong, like the more "family-friendly" sections.
The minecraft forums aren't the place for stuff like that. Find another forum to discuss politics and religion if you enjoy that so much.
I would disagree. A forum is a place for all ideas to be expressed. I've been on multiple game-related forums, each with their own discussion section. Most of them operated the same way this one did. I don't see a reason as to why the Minecraft forum has to operate any different. There are plenty of people on the forum who are fans of the game, but would rather be involved in a discussion section that deals with mature issues instead of music videos, mods and skins.
I think this was a big step backward, since the forum has now ostracized a niche of the Minecraft Forum community, including myself.

I tried participating in many of the PPNS posts, but the discussion never went anywhere. If the discussion isn't leading anywhere, then the people in it are just wasting their time. And the discussions never went anywhere for years.
And I agree that it's a great idea to have this off topic section for the people who don't want to spend all their time talking about the game. And a PPNS in theory is a good idea. But it was obviously not working out the way the moderators were hoping, and many people like myself too. It was just a giant back and forth of I'm right/no I'm right. I wouldn't be surprised if that's where most of the forum's bans came from outside of spambots.
It's like saying a sandbox for kids in the backyard is a great idea, but instead of having fun the kids are just throwing sand at each other and won't listen to people telling them to calm down. It's a good idea, but it wasn't taking the right direction. I wouldn't be surprised if the mods brought it back in a few months with new rules and moderating techniques.
Fair enough, I'm not very familiar with the dynamic on this particular forum. If the problem is bad behavior on the part of the posters, I still don't see why the moderators thought it a good idea to remove the system entirely. If anything, they should have reached out to the more established members for this section in order to figure out what exactly is the problem from a user's perspective, and gather up a list of solutions to try out or bring to the community to gauge reaction.
It wouldn't be unreasonable to say that what needs to change is the format of the section, rather than the rules that govern it. Take this, from debate.org, for example. This format allows for everyone to make their voice heard, but prevents from a back-and-forth squabble that seems to create such an issue. Also, it lets users vote for a particular side without forcing them to comment, so those who might not be confident enough to argue their case can simply make their opinion known through a vote.
If changing the format won't work, a mute function could also be useful. Users on the section can opt to mute someone on the thread if they're being unruly or immature, and would alert the other members who posted on the thread that person X was voted to be muted. Then, if so many people (ex. 5) people vote for a particular person to be muted, the request would be sent to a moderator for review. If the moderator decides to carry it out, that person wouldn't be allowed to post on the section for a week, or more depending on infraction history.

See those are some good ideas to make it better. But in its current state it wasn't working well, so that's probably why they shut it down. I just want to hear an official mod statement about it still, just to clarify everything.

The main reasons were that it wasn't really being kept PG-13 with many of the topics (cannibalism being one easy one to point at), as well as many members were resorting to thinly veiled insults during "heated debates".
From my experience (which, mind you, is about a year out of date for direct experience) is that after someone got an infraction for going overboard, it didn't really resolve any issue, just made the person try to hide their insults a little more, or just made them pretty much disappear for a while before coming back and doing the same thing again.

Not much was lost; a majority of the users got off on their own egos to the point where it actually made me kinda nauseous to read their posts. Seriously, they blatantly injected their massive Kanye-like attitudes into their writing to the point that it actually, physically hurt to read. Those that I could actually respect now have Travis' forum, and hopefully that goes over well for them.

I've been actively posting or viewing C&T for close to two years now, and fanboy attitudes haven't changed there in two years. People still recommend the exact same overpriced junk they did two years ago, only now in an updated form. Is that justification for closing C&T? No.
I'm very disappointed, since it was my favorite section. It was certainly in need of improvement, but instead of talking with the regulars about it and working something out, they just chose to lock it down instead with almost no warning whatsoever. As a result, I have no reason to stay here anymore.
This thread is going to get locked or deleted though, just saying.

I hope you know that it's in the off topic section of the forum. Most of the topics had like 6+ pages so they stuck around a lot longer than normal threads so obviously it's not going to be different unless new people come and like to debate. It's like how the other sections never change, it's the same old stuff most of the time. But that's no reason to shut it down. If they reposted it then it most of been old and they don't want to necro post. Also nice trick telling the same thing 3 times.

Why are they locking PPNS-related threads? I made a PPNS thread under the appropriate subforum so that we could discuss its fate, but it was locked for no reason. Who knows?
It was a thread for chatting. Eventually it got shut down because it was too active. Same reason they banned swearing and shut down PPNS. If something is too popular and not Minecraft-related, it gets shut down. Honestly, they should just go the whole way and kill off Off-topic.
