As part of our new platform there is a brand new set of notification options, however they can be difficult to understand at first (a problem we're actively working on) so until we've improved the interface this thread serves as an explanation of how to achieve common goals with the new notification settings.
The new notification system does not make a distinction between notifications delivered via email and notifications delivered inline, if you have notifications enabled they will be sent via email and inline on the forum unless you configure email digests. If you would like to disable email notifications tick the "Send email notifications as a daily digest instead of immediately." box and then under "Email Delivery Options" select one day (eg: Sunday), then submit with "Save Preferences" at the bottom of the forum. You will now receive all notifications inline and only one email per week from the forum.
Alternatively if you would like to receive email notifications but only once per day configure the days you would like to be sent email notification digests under "Email Delivery Options".
If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions please let me know! Thank you.
How does the new notification system work with subscribing to sections? I've got everything disabled for receiving notifications for subscribed posts but then I still randomly get the odd notification that somebody posted a thread in the section I follow (usually only 1, despite there having been many more threads posted as well).

That's really strange, can you provide a screenshot of your notification configuration please. Thanks!

Although I've just followed the steps to disable emails (since reporting that problem) because it was kinda annoying
I noticed that it's not actually random thread notifications I'm getting. While it looks like it's just a single thread in the notification box, if I go to the full notification page it's revealed I'm actually getting notifications for every thread in the section but it just groups them together into a single notification in the box.

That's really strange, we'll definitely look into this. Thank you.
I think we need a major thread for notification configuration in general, because everything about them seems messed up. I have my box ticked to get notifications for replies or quotes to my posts, but it only seems to happen about half the time.

That's really strange, are there are any specific instances you can point to so that I can give the development team the information required to track down the problem that causes this? That would be really helpful, thank you! As an aside we have plans to address the notification system as a priority, although it won't be immediately we aim to have a high quality notification system available in the near future. Sorry for the inconvenience in the mean time!

Come to think of it, it seems all the times I wasn't notified were when the replies had multiple quotes in them. Seems like any direct replies to me get through fine.
I wish your development team all the luck in the world for getting the Cobalt forum fully functioning on a level everyone can be happy with!

Thank you for the examples, that's really helpful! I've let the development team know about this, I'll let you know when we know more about the cause and an ETA on a fix. Thanks!
I'm very disappointed in the new system. It's certainly a step back. When I get notifications via email I don't know what was said. I need to click the link in the email which takes me to the first page of the discussion, then I need to click to the last page and scroll. This is a terrible user experience. Before I was able to read the contents of the new post within my email client, thus avoiding two very slow page loads.
I need some help, the email notifications are extremely spammy for me.
How can I fix this?
Did I do something wrong (eg. the wrong settings), or is a forum-side issue?
I enclosed a censored picture of my inbox. And one of my message settings.
EDIT: All the spam seems to be linking to the same alert. I added pictures of the emails to the post. Also, it seems to be fixed by setting it up to send a weekly digest.
Hello,
I am having this excact same issue:
Hello,
I've got an issue with the e-mail notifications.
I posted in a thread, and the OP changed the topic name and requested a topic lock. He replied to a post of mine and the topic got deleted. Somehow I keep getting the same mail notification every few minutes, resulting in this:
Overly attached MinecraftForums
I turned off the notifications but would like to be able to turn them on again without getting that mail forever.
Thanks in advance!
-Mine Timelapser
(About a mail every 10 minutes = 6 mails/hour * 24= 144 mails/day *7 = 1 008 mails/ week = 52 416 mails/year)
Is there any way to fix this without having a weekly digest? I'd like to have an immediate mail.
Is there still no way to get the actual post content to show up in your email? All I get is a notification that something has happened, which is the same as the notification that I get on the site. I still greatly prefer the old subscription emails, where it would actually send you what was said, so I know if the reply is something worth responding to.

I've been asking and asking for this over the past few months and they keep telling me it's coming soon. My guess is they just don't have enough development resources to fix this simple issue. It's a major problem as far as I'm concerned, and has really diminished the user experience here.

It's made the forums very difficult to use, so I've largely stopped coming here as a result. The notification pulldown is just as useless, because if you're following even a few active threads, it gets very long very quickly.

Submit a bug report. I've submitted two already and they've responded both times. Maybe we just need to make a bigger fuss.

And just so you know, I got an email notification for that quote

One instance is this reply to one of my posts. (actually, none of the times I was quoted in that thread were notified to me, come to think of it.)
