The flash of growth and the clash of industry would be seen as a grand gift of man to itself. Growing and ever feeding on the world around it, to feed outward back into the societies it served. But the abhorrent rate at which industry grew and marched, like some rumbling lizard or dragon, would mean it would only need to feed more. And lo we recognized, we were slow. Eager to feed the best which would bring to the world an insurmountable winter.
And though the Western Peoples would have seen feet to tame the monster at home, it could not be silenced or neutered and the rise of international economies in China and Africa only serviced to its spread. And though the West sought to control the devastation it wrought, it could not contain its rapid acidic growth as it gobbled up more and more.
The first shots were predicted before it came, but in the swirling mess of bureaucracy and uncertainty the exact nature of the impending crises were lost. Though it became fashionable for some to pronounce the knife's blade, it was just as fashionable to the others to ignore it and to carry is they would.
By the closing of the second decade of the 21st century, the feel of the world began to shift. And though lauded as being the dragon to come: global warming was not the best to arise and rear its head. Its manifestations merely a weakening mannerism as the skies darkened and the world cooled. The international average slowly dripping down as the ice froze on the windows of the world. Winters suddenly grew more prolonged, drier, colder.
While other places may heat up, the world began to freeze, threatening the wider world as the drying snow-fall over the north lead to weaker rivers during the late spring melt. And for once, the Europeans felt the quench of thirst as was in Africa and Central Asia.
It could perhaps be mounted and defeated by the European minds, if perchance the much attributed faustian greed of the west did not suck the earth dry, as in the following years the oil wells dried, and from there a great expense in production. The West stood on the threshold, staring down into the final ring of Hell where some commentators would say they sold their soul to.
Perhaps they did. Perhaps it was the deals of their ancestors when the first industrial machines churned to life in the early 19th century and set a coarse for self-destruction.
Perhaps Spengler was right, others would think as they saw the twilight of their civilization and all those around them.
The international community tried to manage the distress in the world. The UN and EU convening on their own independent accords to reconcile early differences and direct the flow of the failing resources. But in its democracy, a proper accord could not be reached and frustration bore at each of the members as one-by-one they began to excuse themselves from the great courts. Stripping their power as they returned to their nations, looking inward for their own perfection.
The communities weakened, old demons arose again. The first spark igniting from France. Who in the 2030's turned on the Swiss, rifles bored. “By Jingo!” rang in the world again, as the French National Front decreed, “By Jingo, we shall be masters of the Rhone and the Rhine!”
The year now is 2045. Winter still hangs.
Well, it's been a while since I wrote a new OP and story of my own device, and solo too... Imagine that.
In any case, there's that, and here's the future.
Faustian Winter is set in 2045. In this world, international resource shortages in essentials such as oil and water have forced a stress onto the world. The stress breaking the back of politics with large-scale climate change that's been building since we started using coal to fuel machines. Though the background may not be perfect, it shall do.
This RP shall be enforced as a soft sci-fi politics RP. So this means I can turn a blind eye to some things like robot technology and some extreme engineering feats. But this does not mean go absolutely crazy with the concept. Because ultimately, I want an internal consistency that compliments a general overview of who you are, and their status in this world. As well as to have new incentives and motivations dictated by the current situation. This obviously means control of one thing:
Rivers.
Rivers are a vital source of fresh water, and though desalinization may be a thing for sure it's an expensive affair with the most economical focus of attaining vital water being from control of rivers, lakes, and aquifers and would be a public priority to anyone seeking a nation state. And though nuclear power may offset costs from running desalinization, it's not the perfect cure and may most certainly effect the availability of clean water or public concerns of drinking water.
In all, a complex string of events and things are at play which ultimate effects what would be presumed as a peaceful fail safe in these scenarios and detracts from the fun. Which brings me to another thing, and something I'll get out of the way.
RULES
No godmodding
No Powerplaying
No being an idiot
All other models of RP'ing etiquette apply.
Also, EXPECTATIONS.
These will not be enforced as rules, but will be expected upon you, and they come off rather simply.
Know you place. It may be easy to try and present yourself as a “Great Power” with a capable military, it does negate from the over-all consistency of the RP, especially when everyone's trying to claim it. To this effect I am expecting that if you do apply to a nation you will know enough factors within the nation to play it as it would likely be under this scenario, this can range from the availability of resources (such as these plot-important rivers), social issues, and a certain degree of history that spans before the lore (and contemporary history often presents a picture that can be perpetuated fantastically into this).
Do try to write. I am enforcing this on the same level of Precipice of War. Though that doesn't mean every post needs to be a novella in its own right, I do want you to try. Fun things come about from not only clarity (and knowing your place), but also the capability to find/create and operate fun ideas beyond military nonsense. I want you to seek out and develop a depth beyond hamfisted attempts at being tough or capable.
Reason... Though you can see this as being trying to be realistic, it's only if you want to. There's another dimension to reason here, which is knowing how to fit your ideas into the standing lore and to compliment the consistency there-in. It calls back to knowing your place and is a given. It'll also be having a certain level of refrain out of RP and the ability to sit down to discuss things with the others and to coordinate things to fantastic conclusions. Because if everything is awesome, we all win.
Having said that...

Nation/Group name/Individual:
Background: (History, three paragraphs minimum)
Location: (For nations, color the map. Also, keep this in mind: I am permitting multi-national states provided a single criteria is met: that the secondary nation (as in a nation annexed by another, or conquered by one) is smaller in geographic size than the other, or in population than the other. This should not go the other way, with the smaller nation taking the bigger nation. It is to be expected this “second” nation's public will be at odds with the culture and/or politics of the “primary” nation. These territories should also be next to each other or nearby.)
Despite not really having the time I request a reserve on Germany.
My oMaM post is in final editing and my PoW post is nearly done so this is a time i can get an app done.

It has been since time immemorial that man has looked to the stars in wonder, so I ask you, how can going to them be anything but an extension of a will older than any of us? It is our very nature to discover, and to lust for knowledge, you accept this but doubt the nobility of working to the stars?
You guys better be active if you're gonna take on US, Germany and Russia. Those are all either powerful enough that they would extend their presence far-out, or right in the middle of a hotzone, in the case of Germany. If you can't handle it, settle for something small. I'm looking at Moose and Cheesy. You guys rival me in terms of procrastination and plain unproductivity.
Hmm, maybe I should opt for something a bit less central...
Hell can i cancel my reservation on Germany and go for Eygpt?

If you want action you should take Taiwan and by doing so have had a war in the past with China, the Philippines is less risky.
Also with reduced temperatures Egypt will likely have a much more hospitable environment, that's good but having the Nile will paint a target on me...
I am thinking in my app after the coup Morsi is found guilty and in the chaos that follows the Military finally seizes power for two years and slowly brings a moderate democrat into power, something that would appease the people seeing the failure of the Muslim brotherhood. This would ease tensions with Isreal again and bring them back to the positive they were before the revolution (strangely Egypt and Isreal got along before the peaceful revolution). That would take a major issue off my back but would turn lots of insurgents against me, so that's immediately something to deal with in my history.
Interestingly Egypt has a nuclear energy program, without Morsi that could grow and with a renewed trust with Isreal be supported.
I'm thinking in the end where the rp begins Egypt will be mostly stable (with some insurgent activity) but in an alliance with Isreal and Libya but in a cold war with the Islamic states in Africa and the middle east.
Of course if any of those nations get taken i will talk about this idea with others.

I'm trying to make Russia best Russia. Aka, working out what state it should be in for the RP. I want it to be as realistic as possible for the setting, and on top of that, doing some extra research for it.
That and I'm being slightly lazy... At least I got the map out. I'll try to have Russia done tonight, but if its not, it will definitely be posted tomorrow.

On a side note, today is a two-hour delay after two snowdays. Essentially, that storm took out half my week. Awesome.
You can.

Transparent version so Rivers are still visible.
Did the same, app incoming
Oh wait, didn't see Moose's app. Used the same color and everything. How embarrassing.
