I know hardcore mode is supposed to be locked on the hardest difficulty, but it doesn't work out that way. The difficulty option is global instead of being specific to each world, so whatever you last set your difficulty to is what your hardcore world is. You just can't change it in game, and of course there's the whole perma-dead feature. I take advantage of this and put it on peaceful the first few nights to get an actual house going. I find that if I try to survive the first few nights with monsters, I end up with a less satisfying experience after a while because my house is a derpy wooden affair with little aesthetic value.
Once I'm established with a house and at least iron armor, I crank up the difficulty. Admittedly, I'm still on easy (hay, give me a break), but the notion of losing everything once you die makes things much more exciting.
In case you want to know, here are the fruits of my labor so far. I just installed the spider guard around the roof earlier today.
I just don't play on hardcore. Not because its too hard but because its too easy. If death was around every corner then I would play it. But, I find after the first night, I'm usually pretty well set and not going to die anytime soon. When I do die it's usually to something stupid or I was a little careless. Losing everything to that is just to frustrating, so I just play normal on Hard.
The exception is challenges like skyblock. Then it is a challenge to build up to a secure home.
I have a hardcore world and had just mad a mineshaft when I hit a cave. I go spelunking down there and find three diamond. As I'm headed back to my house I fall in a 2X2 lava pit and die. Goodbye world. Goodbye Diamond.

just an update: I died shortly after posting this topic :sad.gif: I actually regretted building such a nice house on a hardcore world. I won't be doing that for a while.
I always play hardcore on hard difficulty. It's either that or peaceful, which defeats the point of hardcore. I've played hardcore like four times now, and all of those times have led to me rage-quitting because creeping creepers.
I have a hardcore map I bet it is set to easy though. I was wondering why the enemies were no more difficult than my other maps.
On my regular maps the only time I generally die is if something stupid happens like 2 creepers falling out of a dark ceiling and blowing up at the same time.

It may just be the angle, but it look like it's right next to the window. You could get jumped in the middle of the night.
EDIT: BTW, that's a pretty nice house. It seems a little empty, but it looks like a nice place to be.

You want a challenge, I take it?
Try these maps. They are hard as all hell.
