In video, notch shows us why dragons won't, and can't spawn in the main world.
There is a very easy fix to this, and there are several reasons why dragons should not only exist in the ender realm.
In the main world, notch could simply don't make them destroy blocks! Give them a different skin, different personality if he wants, but this could be easily done. I'm sure someone will make a mod for this if notch doesn't implement it himself.
Another, more difficult solution, would be to make them VERY VERY VERY rare and have them only exist above a certain height. I think i would be a great idea to add a "mountain" biome for dragons. They would be very rare on the world and only be above a certain height. This way, dragons could destroy all they want and not ruin the structures placed below. It would also be interesting to see what the AI of a dragon would create if it could just fly through mountains, i think that landscaping would be epic for sure.
Or he could combine the two, i think mountain biomes would be a terrific place for only dragons to exist. He could expand on the mountain biome idea as well. Perhaps the dragon would be allowed to leave the biome for certain amounts of time to go get food, but still spend 75-90% of the time waaaay up in the mountains. This way, dragons are still a danger to those playing on the world, and may have to be fought off from time to time. Dragon attacks could be a very interesting way to make the game more fun.
Notch should consider some of these ideas because minecrafters have been asking for dragons ever since... well... a very long time. If the only way to the ender realm is through an ender portal which can only be found in a stronghold which are already super rare, that would most likely not satisfy most players.
If notch doesn't do this, i'm sure some modder will do some of these ideas some time in the future. It would still be nice to see notch go really above and beyond for this new mob.
DESPITE ALL THIS. Dragons should ALSO still exist in the ender realm. They should be 10x more common and obviously not be restricted to any sort of land/biome.
Well this was a waste of effort. He is making red dragons that can land and not destroy blocks in the overworld.
@notch Markus Persson
After release, I will totally work on slightly less dangerous dragons that don't destroy terrain and can land and whatnot. They will be red.

If he "simply made it so they didn't destroy blocks", then they'd just fly through them without destroying them instead. Which would be silly.
Having them obey collision detection properly would involve extra animations so they can "quickly stop" in mid-air, and perhaps extra pathfinding code so they could try not to crash in the first place.
Still not the hardest project to code up, but not something I'd class as "simple".

You're just jealous 'cause the voices only talk to me
This has all been suggested before, but my quick thoughts:
What Red Dragons Should do:
1. Spawn in custom caves in the sides of mountains that go deep into the earth. 1 per 20 chunks at the least.
2. Sleep for up to 10 days at a time, then occasionally fly out, eat a couple of farm animals, and then return to its home.
3. Breathe fire!
4. If you manage to kill one, you can find an egg at the very end of the cave, which you can eventually raise to maturity with a lot of time, food, and gold.

Dragons would simply be too powerful for a player to have one at their beck and call. Especially a fully mature one.

Just waiting for Forge to officially release for 1.13.x to remove unneeded mobs from 1.13, like Phantoms, from the game because, in my gameplay based opinion, they add nothing of value to the game.
Fun fact: Clicking a bed every 30 minutes doesn't make you a better player, it makes you one who clicks a bed every 30 minutes. Wouldn't you rather just mod them out of the game completely?

It wouldn't be as powerful as a regular one, and don't you think that over the span of an in-game week or two, requiring 20+ fish and 20+ beef, plus maybe 15 gold and diamond, that wouldn't be balanced?
