My friends and I have been doing speedrun races running north and staying within 50 blocks of east and west. The goal is to beat the game before others, while slowing down or killing others as well. Except I would like to make it so we cannot be too zealous agains mobs and fall damage without repercussions

Maybe there is a way with command blocks and plugins, but that seems a bit tricky.
Let me explain:
Last year christmas time i was still playing on a citybuild. They had an event running, a christmas calendar.
I figuered out they had 24 chests with the specific items on the christmas map.
(they forgot to place barrier blocks or worldborder so i could peek behind the scenes)
Each day we had to search 1 door to get the items. These doors were signs that needed to be rightcicked.
Then the player got his event items.
What i mean by this is you could try to reverse the process:
Copy the player inventory to chests and use their content for specific gameplay-events, like player kills player.
That's probably easyer to mod then to do with commandblocks. Creating algorithms in a 3d world is very confusing to me.
