When i was, like, 7 I started playing Minecraft. I remember feeling like there was endless possibilities, and that I was the god of Minecraft or something, when in reality i didn't even know how to build a house! Haha. I built huge houses made out of glow-stone and diamonds. I spawned many mobs and killed them, i felt like i was a spy or something, ha.
These days it's so much different, automated this, done that, completed this, here we go with another huge project. I miss when i started playing minecraft because (A. I was young, hah. (B. It was, for me at least, such more laid-backed and you didn't feel pressured to get a map or a build or something out by some time.
So how did you feel with your first experience of minecraft and what did you do?
For me it was about the mining of resources and building a village, expanding a Desert Temple (to be my favourite base design I make every time I find a Desert Temple, I add differences each time but for storage purposes really is why I make it) in Vanilla, then I went to tech and QOL mods to automate, I've never used Vanilla automation logic that much.
These days I just download mods/maps/datapacks and have fun (spotlighting on my Youtube channel or just learning them for the technical/creative aspects of them) no matter what size (more so small QOL of life ones over big tech, RPG adventure like, dimension or magic mods), content or scope just as I'm curious what people are up to and sometimes want a new experience like you get with creating a new Minecraft world with a new goal and theme/just like how you would consider exploration be fun and peeking curiosity. It's not the exact same but for me it feels new and fresh since I know a lot about the game like many others so it's hard for things to feel fresh unless you take a break (which I have small ones not a long one), many mods/datapacks do get samey sure but I just have fun with it.
But I do agree it does seem it is about automation these days, at least from tutorials, but in terms of playing on Vanilla servers I've not seen that so I can't comment much on that, but from what I've played on datapack centred servers they were fun and not about automation but just more playing them like Vanilla+ modpacks, testing if they work (dev test servers for the datapacks), exploring the world and chatting with friends. There was basic automation like for furnace fuel, maybe a few other things but very minor, not Ink Sac, Iron, Fish and other farm heavy.
Sure you can make impressive builds, but maxing out efficient ways to do things in the game is fine if you have something to do with it, getting rich is pointless if you can't do anything with it. The journey of automation is fine, but when I use mods I have a goal in mind to use them for purposes to progression through them like quests in a game and the other assist ones are just there as extra that feel right to have along, I might automate a bit but not so much to go crazy, with Vanilla automation I've never understood why, sure getting ink sacs, iron, fish, xp, kelp and otherwise is fine if you have other ways you want to improve it or have it work for other members on a server but abusing the game isn't worth it unless you want to cheat, break the game or a bored/want to see what's possible I see it as. I mean if you hate iron mining why not get an iron golem through spawning means, sure.......
The game is tedious but the fun in Minecraft is getting resources with it's tedium to build or survive, get creative with blocks, mod enhancements and more.
I see both sides but I fit into the middle on this one. I obviously know more about the modding side than Vanilla farms but from what I have come across it is a bit odd. Like sure you can build with iron blocks in survival for builds, but otherwise what do people do with it?
My first version was Minecraft PE (Pocket Edition). I felt the same as you when I first started! The possibilities were endless, I felt like I unlocked something amazing (which I did). But... uh... ultimately, I felt confused and scared. Mobs? They absolutely terrified me. I'd go out of my ugly, brick/quarts house at late morning to make sure I didn't encounter any burning mobs, and I'd go back home 2 minutes later even though the sun was still rising... I played this edition for about a year before I became a Minecraft fanatic.
Then, I got into Console Edition on the PS4. After a year of playing PE, I was a crazy Minecraft fan. Me and my family were browsing around on the PS4 games, when I noticed "Minecraft: PS4 Edition", so I pointed it out and we watched the trailer. My parents said we wouldn't be getting it, but I practically burst into tears and literally begged to buy it. And, after 15 minutes of begging later I got it. I learnt the controls quite fast, because I used to play Little Big Planet, and Minecraft had pretty much the same basic controls like jump, walk, crouch... easy.
Getting into PS4 was a huge step for me in Minecraft, because I created my YouTube channel in 2015 (which I'm inactive on now) where I uploaded videos like Stampy did like stories. At this stage, I got into watching Minecraft Youtubers such as DanTDM, Stampy, all the classics. DanTDM was the first Minecraft youtuber I got into. He was the one that made me want to get into PC Edition Minecraft. Why? I saw him make mod reviews, and I thought it looked really fun.
At first, I thought "Mod" meant "Mode", so I thought it was just a certain mode that gave you rockets, candy factories, animals, etc... it was really stupid. I talked about it with my parents (yes, I asked my parents about everything) and they told me a Mod was only on the PC version of the game. So... I begged for the PC mode xd... For weeks I wanted it, until finally I came into the lounge room and got on our family computer, to see "Minecraft" installed. This is when I got into Mods, which was a great experience.
Even though I finally got the Java Edition, I spent ages figuring out how to even download the mods... I really wanted this Rocket mod, that allowed you to build rockets, go to the moon, it had copper and some other additional ores... it was pretty cool. It's really sad, I know, but I literally spent months with my parents figuring out how to download it until finally when we got it to work, I played it for a couple hours then UNINSTALL. Yeah, I was a pretty annoying kid when it came to Minecraft.
Though I got into the Java edition of Minecraft and learnt the basic functions and controls of it, PS4 stayed my favorite. It still is one of my favorites to this day, and I created more unforgettable memories on the Console version of Minecraft than I did on PC. However, recently, I got more into Java and have really started to enjoy it.
I still play Minecraft... and I love it just the same as I just started. :/ Nothings changed. I do get nostalgia but I'm not at the "Back In My Day" stage yet. I'm still in the Making Memories Stage, even though I've played for over 5 years. Unlike some other people, I'm still enjoying the new updates... I understand some people feel sad because it's not like classic "old" Minecraft, but if they never updated it...you're telling me people wouldn't complain? Minecraft would be dead if none of the new features came out. Anyway, that was my first experience playing all versions (PE, PS4, PC).
bonus story: I was such a noob that one time I was in creative mode I was wondering "hm how do I craft diamonds??" so I looked up in the crafting menu how to and it said you needed Diamond Blocks to make Diamonds, so I wondered "hm how do I craft diamond blocks then??" so I looked at the crafting recipe and it said I needed Diamonds to craft Diamond Blocks, and I got really really mad and kept saying the game was glitching...
