I've been running my server for a while now about 2 years actually and had very minimal success. I really have been lacking players and have no idea how to get them. I engage with my players when they join and be as nice as possible. It seems not very often a decent player joins, usually people come on and spam their server or asks for staff. This has seriously been aggravating because I've spent hours upon hours developing my server.
I could really use some suggestions on what I should do.
I'm not a server owner, but there should be many factors to consider.
First off, we need more details about your server. From a Google search, it appears to run Skyblock, 1.8.x - 1.12.x, correct?
Alright. Many, many factors to consider.
How have you been advertising?
Is it 24/7?
Is it fun? What makes it unique compared to other larger servers? Many other servers have Skyblock, but they also have ten other game modes. You seem to be focused on attracting Skyblock players only, so what makes your server special?
You said that many players come to ask for staff. Of course, those probably aren't the best choices for staff positions, but regardless, do you have any staff members for your server?

It has an awesome spawn so I think I'm fine there it's not just a dirt block with squids I promise I have some cool NPC's like a repair man who has a cool gui, and a enchant NPC and a few other guys like that. I had a very kind positive and humorous community before it died. The main point of what im trying to do is have a great community.
I'm developing my Survival server 1.5 year and it works all that time. At start it was announced as "Friend Server" for my friends and their friends. We had 20 slots and pretty nice perfomance. We had nicely configured plugins that was chosen by our small community to improve our multiplayer survival experience. But we got a huge problems after 3 or 4 month of playing. For some reason people wont play if they dont see me on server. If i play some time and then disconnect - people stop interacting with each other, excluding small groups (2-3 people in it). That problem was somehow solved by opening a server to public and adding new blood to our community. First 3 month everything was good. We met a lot of new cool guys, but it was far enough from healthy community. Holywars, conflicts between groups (old "friend server" players and newbros), staff that start making lynching because of joining to one of groups. When it started it was hot, but some time after it cools down and became "cold war". Thats the problem i couldnt solve. After 6 month of this - players start leaving very fast. Less then in a month server got empty. No one play on it except me for 4 month at this time and some random "pls give me staff"-guys. I think i lost the moment, when i could stop that conflict between players in game or make it more fun and useful to warm up the interest in it. I hope that i can rebuild community from scratch and start all over again and make it right in next try. Sorry for mistakes in text or something else, english is not my main language. Hope you found something useful in this small story.
I see many servers where the owner doesnt talk to the players at all and only to their friends, I like to talk to the new players so they feel more welcomed. I want my server to just be a fun place.
For advertising, I use the server lists and advertise on my youtube channel. I also tell my friends about it then they tell their friends. All of that still doesn't seam to attract players :/
