Im thinking about buying a nintendo switch, mainly to play Minecraft. I found out that the world boarder is 3000x3000 max, from playing the PC version since Early alpha, i feel like a set boarder would be a limitation to the experience of minecraft, you cant explore for hours, look for new places to settle, you are actually limited.
Anyone who plays Minecraft on the PS4/Xbox or version which has a world boarder, do you feel that it limits the experience?
That is the current map size for the Nintendo Switch Edition. Once the Nintendo Switch is moved onto the Better Together Update sometime early next year the map size will be virtually infinite.
Take a look at the map sizes for other versions:
Raspberry Pi: 256x256
Xbox 360 / Playstation 3: 800x800 (approximately)
Xbox One Edition (original, not the better together) / Playstation 4: Large Map 5000x5000 (approximately)
I think the Wii-U Edition is just slightly larger than the Xbox 360 / Playstation 3 editions. I don't know for certain though.
Yeah, the world borders are quite a bit of a limitation. They are a bit of a necessary evil on a fixed platform such as a console in order to keep them within the specs defined by the manufacturer. This is something that console players have griped about for years, but have learned to live with.
Unfortunately, consoles will never be able to have the full freedom and versatility of the original Java Edition of Minecraft. The new Bedrock (Better Together) version of the game that is on Xbox One, and soon to be on Nintendo Switch is the closest that it will come to that. Microsoft/Mojang are constantly working on improving it, so we'll have to see where that leads in the future. Console is also limited as far as texture packs, skins, maps, etc. to what can be purchased in the Minecraft store. Where Java Edition everything is free, you just have to look for it. iOS, Android, and Windows 10 Editions (also bedrock/Better Together) are not limited to just the store. There's plenty of free stuff available for those platforms as well as what you pay for in the store.
The Nintendo Switch is a great console that you would have a lot of fun with. Don't get it just for Minecraft. If you do decide to play Minecraft on it, just realize that there will be limitations and you won't be able to rely upon Java Edition YouTube videos in order to accomplish certain things as the game play is a little different.
