I literally just cried.. It was my first time playing Minecraft and I had just built a beautiful recreation of a Jarl's longhouse from Skyrim. It took me over an hour to build!!! But I guess the problem was I put a lava pit in the middle of an all-wood floor house to simulate that fire pit that makes the houses in Skyrim so cozy feeling. I got up to get some Mountain Dew and Cheetos and when I came back my Castle was in ashes:'(. Gonna sit down and re-build it...
I don't know how much free time you have, but I have barely during the week and I don't think 1 hour on that house was a significant loss. Think about it, you probably learned a great deal about house building in the progress :-)

Over an hour to build, so... any given amount of time really. An our is hardly time enough to build anything really grand. Why do people say that? If it meant that much to you, then over an hour is hardly persuasive. How long did it really take?
In any case, seeing you are a new player, apparently, don't be putting lava among wood. lava is hot. It's lava for crying out loud!

Yea I guess most people spend hours and hours building things, I'll give it another try. I might even go on a multiplayer server and give myself a challenge

I'm not a new player, and I've made that mistake (although in my case it was burning netherrack). The fireplace I put it in was stone, but the house was wood, and with only one block between the fire and the wood, that's apparently enough to pass the heat through. Fortunately, I caught it in time to put it out. My solution was to increase the thickness of the fireplace from one block to two. That worked.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. I will face my fear. I will let it pass over me and through me, and when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
If you have a good idea of what you want to build (firm concept and/or building plan), are experienced enough with minecraft to understand what things will look like (spatial visualization), and have enough resources to keep going until complete (basic preparation, hoarders anonymous, a mature world producing more stuff than you can consume) an hour-long build can be truly impressive.
Most people just waste significant amounts of time on building because they didn't properly do the prepatory work beforehand.

That should help you in the future. Prevents fire from spreading.
Yet another perfect example of why a diet of Mountain Dew and Cheetos is bad for you.

Haha, this tragedy brought to you by Pepsico.
