Like...an item enters a pipeline, and the pipeline takes it out of a 128 block radius of you? Will the item disappear? Will it "pause" the pipeline until you get close?

Just like redstone or minecarts, if the current or item gets out of the loaded chunks range it will pause until you get into range. I know that the item will be fine at 128 blocks, and the redstone chunk range is not affected by view distance. I have tried finding the actual number unsuccessfully and tried to do some testing.
I made a redstone line going 375 blocks out and back powering a torch near me for confirmation and found it to still work no matter what view distance. I stopped the testing at 370 blocks since it became unbearable to keep tacking on so much redstone and making the trek out 370 blocks and back for a test.
I also did some testing for hoppers which has a top speed of 1 block per .4 seconds. I had a successful "hopper length" test that brought an item through hoppers out to 270 blocks and back. Test was successful, but was stopped because, again, the large amount of time to set-up and wait for a response was killer.
I would like to have actual numbers if anyone can find them for the length of redstone and hopper loading since the wiki doesn't provide the information as far as i know.
Just wondering which direction to make the witch farm item storage line. I was debating between up near the AFK zone, or down at ground level where it'd be cheaper to build.
