I have a 2005 Compaq Presario that is in good condition, but not a very strong computer. I have been wanting to get a gaming computer, but don't know if I should invest in a new one or invest in upgrading that. I know what is needed to upgrade it, but I want to know it if it is possible.
Here are the items I need to upgrade:
- Processor (I want to upgrade it to a 64-bit processor for Windows 7 64-Bit and more RAM)
- New OS (It currently has windows XP)
- RAM (Currently at 3gbs DDR2 but needs to be 4)
- Graphics Card (Currenty has a 512mb that I put in a couple of months ago, it needs at least a 1gb)
I am looking to play games like Battlefield 3, Skyrim, Stronghold3, and Company of Heroes. All pretty good usage taking games. I also program so I would need a good computer for doing this too, I am going to be working on a big project soon, so I need a computer able to run it,
Here is the list of stuff I would like in a computer if I bought one:
- 8gbs of RAM
- 2gb video card
- 3.0+ ghz processor
- Windows 7 64-Bit
So would which one would be cheaper? Obviously, if I bought a new computer it would be better, but I am looking for just good enough to play at an average FPS for these games.
If you have any ideas of suggestions please comment. Also, my budget is about 600$. I can go higher if needed, not too much though.

seems for what you want it too do $600 isnt enough get a computer with at least an i5 anything less and its a waste of money you could get something pretty good for around $1000

You need at least 16gig Of RAM to take full advantage of Windows 7.
Gaming Computers Are Still Preferred To Be WINDOWS XP 32-BIT
It uses less ram, you spend less money, and it functions basically the same.
It Invest most of your memory to games, all/most games will function best in Windows XP.
Windows 7 is Aesthetic choices so is Vista
if you want Vista or Windows 7 remember you need at least (8gig for vista and 16 gig for 7)

Personally, I love windows xp. But the games are starting to only be produced on vista and 7. I would love to stick with xp- 32 bit, but that only lets me use 3.5gbs of RAM. Max. That is why I need 64-bit.

or you can wait for Windows 8
once that comes out Vista and XP will be obsolete that's just how companies make money
but if you want to go with the flow Windows 7; 16gig ram 32-bit, 20gig ram for 64-bit
go for it~ make sure your case has a lot of airflow preferable server size case.

That "need 16GB to take full advantage of W7" is not true at all. Go with W7, 4GB of RAM is plenty if you only play games, 8GB is a possibility too but not necessary. Furthermore, CrossFire 5000 series?? You're better off getting a single 6970 of GTX 570 if you really need all that performance.
Also, 2GB VRAM? Are you gaming on 2560x1600 resolution or multiple monitors? Otherwise 1GB will be sufficient for a good while (for the more budget oriented people, 1GB Radeon 6870 is king, one step above, the GTX 560 Ti 1GB or 6950 1GB).
And yeah, you should build a new one. Brand pc's are notoriously bad to upgrade, never mind a 6 year old one! You can get a pretty complete budget gaming pc for $600, something along the lines of i3-2100, 6870, 4GB RAM should be possible. Also do not skimp on the PSU, you don't want a cheap crappy one crap on your pc.
Well I will have dual monitors for programming anyways, and most 1gb graphics cards don't have the 2 DVI outputs for my monitors. I also like high quality gaming :smile.gif:
This is ridiculous. A good windows 7 machine can have as low as 6GB of ram and anything higher then 12GB makes no difference AT ALL with the functionality of the machine.
I work at MIT with hundreds of programmers and engineers and we all use windows 7, even on some of our more limited machines.
You can easily build a GOOD gaming machine for 600$ most games don't load any more then 4GB into ram during play and windows 7 doesn't use any more then 1GB to run the machine. It will continue partitioning a larger section up until you hit 16GB of ram, however the computer doesn't function any different. If you invest some money into a decent motherboard and some ram, then spend a little more on a processor and a lot on a graphics card, you will be fine. 600$ will build you a gaming machine.
Ok cool. I will probably do that I just need help picking out a good case and all of that. I honestly will probably go with what you said.
windows 7 64bit
4-8 gas of RAM
A good processor (i5 maybe?)
And other stuff.

All newer GPU's come with 2 DVI ports.
You can build a computer at lower graphics settings that will run those games but max settings is out of the question for that budget. Are you building this computer or buying a prebuilt one?

My friend got one with all of that for 600$.
Yes.
AMD Anthlon 64 Processor 3800+
2.41 ghz
3.00 GBs of RAM
Ok. I was also considering that too...
Video Card: ATI RADEON 5000 SERIES Cross Fire

Not like Max settings, but like Normal fog on minecraft. Somewhere along those lines....So Average I guess.
