*IMPORTANT*
I will write this expecting that you have WinRAR and that your minecraft.jar opens with it, so if you don't have it, get it. Also back up your saves by creating a WinRAR archive anywhere you want, searching %appdata%, opening roaming/.minecraft/saves and dragging all the folders within saves into the WinRAR archive. USE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, BUT USING IT ISN'T REALLY A BAD IDEA.
As the title of this post explains, not enough people today know how to install mods, so use this very detailed tutorial. Let's start out by getting some APIs, or whatever you want to call them.
The first one you should install is modloader, because you won't be able to install it after the next two APIs: (however modloader won't work after the other two are installed)
download modloader, you can just open a new internet tab and search 'modloader', and you should find it easily
now go into your downloads folder and open the modloader download .zip
minimize the modloader download .zip window and close your downloads folder
search %appdata% in the start menu
open the roaming folder, then create a desktop shortcut to .minecraft, as you will need to access it alot
open .minecraft, then open bin, then open minecraft.jar (the WinRAR file called minecraft)
restore the modloader download .zip and drag all the files into minecraft.jar
delete the META-INF folder from minecraft.jar
close all the windows you have open, but only minimize this one
run minecraft and modloader should work
Now for something that tons of mods use and caused me alot of grief, minecraft forge
download minecraft forge the same way you got modloader (make sure you get the universal .zip)
open the Minecraft Forge download .zip
close your downloads folder
open .minecraft/bin, then open minecraft.jar
delete any folders from minecraft.jar that exist in the minecraft forge download .zip
drag all the files from the minecraft forge download .zip into minecraft.jar, including META-INF, despite the fact that you had to delete it for modloader
close all windows you have open, but only minimize this one
run minecraft and forge should work
This last one is used by very few mods, but is easy to install and good to have, Player API
download player API
open your downloads folder
open the player API download .zip
open .minecaft/bin, then open minecraft.jar
drag all the files from the player API download .zip into minecraft.jar
close all windows you have open, but only minimize this one
run minecraft and Player API should work
Now you should be able to get any mod you want, just read the readme folders in the mods' download .zip; however some mods will ask you to delete META-INF, which you shouldn't do after you installed forge.
Thank You!
Hi,
I am grateful for your help, but when I download minecraft forge, (after modloader of course), my minecraft gives me a black screen, i am using the latest windows version, any help would be appriciated.

Alright, here's how I'd fix the problem:
Delete .minecraft, run minercraft, close minecraft, re-install modloader, then re-install forge; this time make sure:
-you are using the 'universal' download .zip'
-you delete any folders in minecraft.jar that exist in the minecraft forge download .zip
Thanks for the vote by the way.
unfortunately, the problem seems to be persisting... I am using Minecraftforge-universal-1.4.7-6.6.0.497.zip for the forge and just Modloader.zip for Modloader, as I said, I am able to download Modloader and run minecraft just fine, but forge seems to be causing problems. It still gives me that aggravating black screen while loading the main page. Thanks for your help thus far, and I would greatly appreciate a response to this tedious dilemma of mine...
Hmm... I'll keep trying to crack this, as I basically made it my duty when I wrote the original post... make sure you're following all the instructions exactly. For now, try installing forge without modloader.

It's soo easy. But man, you just have to co-operate with them. If they don't know how, you teach them. If they don't get it, try again. Half the time they don't get it because they don't want to. Patience is needed to learn how to do it. Once you get it, IT"S EASY!
Just don't use mods, Mods crash anyway unless you have the latest stuff. The technic launcher is the only good one I can get to work.
Vanilla Minecraft is good enough, if you are bored, find a server or play a custom map.
Don't insult mods. They are awesome, and minecraft is really boring without them; servers are just so annoying to go on, and the Technic launcher doesn't have every mod there is.

You are absolutely right. Mods get easy to install once you figure out how to install just one. In fact, I basically made myself a private modpack. Also, that is the exact reason why I made this post.
Thank you so much for posting this. My son really wants to add mods and this is by far, the easiest explanation I have seen to print and help him out. Appreciate it!!!
I have a problem. Every time i try to delete the META-INF file, an error pops up saying that it is being used somewhere else. I have everything else closed, but it still doesnt work. Plz help.

You are very welcome, but I prefer beef over pork XD.

Restart your computer, then try again. Look through the programs that begin on startup (usually at the bottom-right corner of the screen) and close anything that might have to do with minecraft, just to be safe (except the programs that minecraft needs to run).
I think it would be a bit helpful to add sections dealing with Mac and Linux, and for you to add links to the mods you use in this tutorial. While the idea is the same (I assume for Mac, know from experience for Linux), some people may not know how to find their Minecraft folder on these OS types, or if they need to get extra programs.
For instance, the .minecraft folder on Linux is in the user's home folder, but they need to use CTRL+H to unhide the folders (any folder with a period before the name is hidden), and the most popular Linux distro type (Ubuntu) comes with the "Archive Manager", which works much like WinZip/WinRAR/7Zip/etc.
I don't know about Mac, but the install process for Linux is pretty much the same at that point.

I don't no anything about macs, because I boycott their products, due to the fact that they moved just about every job they had out of the U.S. Linux, well, I don't know much about Linux either.
Back in 1.2.5 this would happen, but since 1.3.2, Forge includes FML (Forge Modloader) in it, which should be able to load Modloader mods (except those which are incompatible with Forge itself, like Better Than Wolves). If you install Forge and Modloader, there's a good chance that that is what is causing your pain with Forge.
Their are few mods I've seen like that. Maybe I'll make a tutorial on compatibility.

Maybe, maybe. I don't want to take traffic away from download websites though; but I'll put this idea into consideration.

No, I'm pretty sure they are, you just have to install modloader first.
Either way, most mods that need modloader can use forge instead.
