what this tutorial is: it's a modified version of DerrikeG's tutorial (from which most of the screenshots are) that doesn't include much sarcasm (I had a hard time removing all of it) nor any babies.
Described here:
[*:32ium4a5] How to use the mod forum.
[*:32ium4a5] How to find your minecraft.jar on all major operating systems.
[*:32ium4a5] How to install the mod properly.
[*:32ium4a5] What to do when the mod is not installed properly.
Setting Up
First thing's first, you need to get an archive manager.
For Windows and Mac download and install WinRAR.
For Linux use your favorite archiver. Beware of archiver bugs!
If you don't like WinRAR, then that's fine. However, this guide isn't going to be specific to any programs but winrar for mac and windows and file-roller on linux.
You can use the same concept as long as you know how to do it in your own tool. After you download and install the program, forget about it for a little while.
Okay, so, I assume you already have minecraft setup and installed. So, if it's not, fix that and let's begin!
First, start minecraft.
Once you've got minecraft started, take a look at those important numbers (the minecraft version up at the top. It's circled in red.
Now close minecraft. You can't change your minecraft.jar while it's still open.
Using the Mod Forums
Now you need to start your internet browser. I assume you know how to do such a thing already. Then navigate to the minecraft mod forum.
Type in: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewforum.php?f=25
You want a mod? What mod is it?
This part is outdated: the forum search is currently disabled.
Well, let's try our luck! Navigate to this thing up in the top:
Now type in what you want and hit enter.
If you make a spelling mistake, use a dictionary service until it corrects you.
After thats, look through the results of your search until you find the one for the mod you want.
Scroll all the way up to the top and click on this:
Click on the part circled in RED for you to find the Original Post.
Now read the whole post, you have to find those important numbers (the minecraft version) mentioned about earlier.
Look up, look down, use your browser's search function by pressing ctrl and f at the same time.
Now we have to download it.
Now remember where you put it. Then look at the bottom, it says that it needs other things. Click those links.
Use ctrl and f to find what you need. It said ModLoader and AudioMod, Are you looking?
Remember that everything you download has to have those important numbers that I told you about!
Finding Your .minecraft Folder Windows: .minecraft
presswindows logo and the r button at the same time, then type in %appdata%/.minecraft and hit enter.
Mac: .minecraft
Click the spotlight button on the upper right hand corner of your screen:
click on the terminal in spotlight:
then type in open "~/Library/Application\ Support/minecraft" and hit enter.
Linux: .minecraft
I assume that since you run linux, you can figure out how to open up your file manager and navigate to ~/.minecraft. Remember that .minecraft is hidden so you will likely have to show hidden files and directories.
All Together Now
You should see a folder that has some of these things inside it:
Installing your Mods
So now, all you have to do is open the archives you downloaded.
But what do you do with all these things?
You have to take that .minecraft folder and navigate to the bin folder.
Now here's the tough part, you have to read install instructions!
Since you know that your animals mod requires those other two, why don't we install those first. Let's look at what the Original Post in that thread said.
Quote from risugami »
Oh my! We're already half way through!
Just open your minecraft.jar in winrar. Right click it, open it with winrar.
Now all we have to do is drag and drop the files! Drag and drop Audiomod first.
(note for linux users: you have to extract the archive first due to a bug with most archive managers.)
If this shows up, then just hit "OK". Don't worry about it. Now do it again for Modloader.
Did you drag and drop everything? Are you sure? Missing any files or folders will make it not work.
Notice how all the folders were red. That's because you shouldn't drop the files on the folders because else they will go inside them. You don't want that to happen! Put them on top of other files so that does not happen.
Alright, now all we have to do is install that mod you wanted.
You see that file right there? It is called README. aka "READ" and "ME". Click on it until it opens! Come on, you can do it.
Oh look, it has instructions too!
For the most part, we can do the first half of them in one step.
We have to drag all those files over. Remember, don't put them on top of a folder. You see that little blue part? That means that there are more files to drag over than what you can see in the picture. Just drag that little bar down and drag over the rest of the files.
Now we have to find and remove META-INF!
Note for mac users: you should actually only delete the MOJANG files in meta-inf. technically, meta-inf is required.
META-INF is a folder, you can see it right there. Just select it and press the delete button at the top or press the Delkey on your keyboard.
Answer yes to the prompt. Answering no means to not delete meta-inf and you don't want that.
Now we have to get back to the folder we came from, the .minecraft folder. Hit the little arrow pointing to the left in your file manager that is currently inside the bin folder. In WinRAR, double click on the folder with the two dots to navigate back.
Now we open the other folder inside of the mod archive. In the window that is now open to .minecraft, open up the resources folder.
Remember what we've learned!
Answer "yes to all" to the prompt.
Alright, now it's time for the moment of truth, open up your minecraft.
Now all you have to do is test around for what you installed.
What to do when this tutorial does not work.
Delete everything and do it again. Either a mod conflicted, the game updated, or you are using an old save without the mods you used to create it with. If it is none of those things, then you broke it and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Stupidity on the rise with a 40% chance of shitstorms.
I cant find the Mod folder that is mentioned in the second last instruction, im new to modding and im trying to install Risugami's "ModLoader Beta 1.3_01v4"... can anyone help me out here? :/
Whenever I try to download winrar it gives me a f***ing exe that says This program cannot be run in DOS mode.
by the way I followed everything right down to actually typing all that crud you need in the terminal for modloader winrar is a useless piece of and has no use to me, and when I try to open minecraft.jar with the jar loader thats already installed on the computer it says check for error messages. i searched this on google and guess what it told me? it told me to DOWNLOAD WINRAR WHICH DOES NOTHING ON MY MAC WTF is the problem
I have a suggestion on what you can add to this Installation guide, you should add a section explaining what types of files go into which folder. For example: ".class" files go into the Minecraft.jar, and so on and so forth. It will help people that are downloading mods with lots of files but no install instructions.
Also thanks for "editing" the other guy's installation guide, the sarcasm and babies got annoying after the the first few steps.
Every time I get to the part where it says
" Now all we have to do is drag and drop the files! Drag and drop Audiomod first"
that picture in which he said to "just hit "OK". Don't worry about it."
I hit OK and this pops up!
! Cannot rename __rzi_42.3980688 to C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner.YOUR-F78BF48CE2\Application Data\.minecraft\bin\minecraft.jar
! Cannot create C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner.YOUR-F78BF48CE2\Application Data\.minecraft\bin\minecraft.jar
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
Can somebody here help me? When I try to install mods I follow all the instructions, get all the mods that are needed for them to work, and delete the meta-inf folder. But when I start up minecraft and login, I just get a black screen.
If somebody here uses PowerDesk Pro 6, I need help. Like that other poster said, my computer is being a giant lump of
When I try and drag the contents of Modloader into the minecraft.jar file, my f*cking cursor turns into this giant circle with a cross through it.
And even extracting it doesn't show the small application.

If you have the time, place TNT under their floor, and have a random pressure plate in the middle of their floor.
Put a sign up over the plate that reads "Step on Me".
I've been having an issue with Industrialcraft. I follow these instructions down to the letter, however I still get blackscreened. I understand that it's probably a compatibility issue, but I'm not entirely sure how to proceed from there. I've tried re-doing it countless times--and yes, I've deleted META-INF every time.
good tutorial, now i have to ask, ive set up a server for me and a couple of friends and there are a couple mods i would like to set up for it does this work pretty much the same way with the minecraft_server.jar? or is there another way i'm supposed to set the mods on the server?
Since the game has been updated to version beta 1.5, does this mean the tut should get updated?
Or does that mean I need to change my archiver, because I've been using PeaZip.
Mac: .minecraft
Click the spotlight button on the upper right hand corner of your screen:
click on the terminal in spotlight:
then type in open "~/Library/Application\ Support/minecraft" and hit enter.
I tried this and it told me the folder didn't exist. And there was nothing in the zip I downloaded besides the Minecraft.app file itself. *puzzled*
EDIT: Never mind, I figured it out. For others with this issue, this is what worked for me:
To open the correct folder -
open "Library/Application Support/minecraft"
To open the minecraft.jar file in the bin folder and insert mods: (I kept getting errors when I tried using the terminal to do it)
Quote from RandomGuy27 »
1. Open with Archive Utility
2. Insert mods
3. Press Command+A to select all the files
4. Right click and press "Compress # Items"
5. It should give you a file named "Archive.zip", find it and drag it to the bin folder where the original minecraft.jar is
6. Delete the old minecraft.jar (Or move it to another folder if you don't have a backup already) and then rename the "Archive.zip" to "minecraft.jar" (It will ask if you want to use a .zip or .jar extension, click "Use .jar")
There are programs like WinRAR for Mac but I have always just done it this way.
This is assuming you know how to get to the minecraft.jar file. If you don't just say so. :tongue.gif:
I cant find the Mod folder that is mentioned in the second last instruction, im new to modding and im trying to install Risugami's "ModLoader Beta 1.3_01v4"... can anyone help me out here? :/
i am wondering that as well does anyone know whats with the folder called "Mod" and how to find it i tried makinga folder called mod putting all the stuff in the mod i wanted in the folder then putting said folder into that mod and im not sure if thats how your supposed to get that folder is it?
Every time I get to the part where it says

The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
I can't continue afterwards.
Please help.
This may be happening because your Minecraft is running, while your trying to install the files.
