I've not done much SMP, but I've always liked the various City protections that many servers have, so that if you are in a city you have a stake in you are able to build stuff and modify the scenery, but if you are in someone else's city then you are a guest.
Also I like the idea of a certain area around the spawn zone being protected so that way anyone coming to the server can experience the world the same for the first time.
Ok, here are my thoughts put into simple lines of text.
Nerf Creepers, TNT, Fire Spread, *Slimes.
White-list.
Chest, furnace, jukebox, pumpkin, bed, protection commands that can be used by any player.
Block protection commands for mod+ only.
Mobs ON
Health gain ON (Half a heart every 2 seconds if possible)
Land marks (Like Pumpkin on a stick) protected
Players can only build in Towns, but can mine in un-protected caves.
Grand Arena: includes races, wolf wars, speelf, pvp, and more, with prizes for tournaments too.
*Slimes are nerfed so that we can use slimes as a currency to create a closed and flowing economy, the economy will help people decide to make shops.
I agree with what he said
btw I have not really been a part of the forums as you can see by my post count but i really love this map.
i would not be offended if i could not be in the server due to space constrictions because I haven't really contributed to the thread.
but i was wondering, why only build in towns? one of the best parts of this map is building with the terrain, so it would be a shame to constrict that. sorry if I'm misunderstanding what you were saying, i havent really done to much smp.
Some good ideas here, thanks for the feedback guys. I'd like to hear from more folks before we decide on anything, but in thinking about some of them, I'm wondering how we'd determine where to to protect/not protect. Would we prefer to protect very small areas or go the other way around and only unprotect certain areas? Either way seems a bit limiting, but if we can agree on the right approach here I think we'll be good.

In my mind, it would be easiest to un-protect as we go, and when a player finds a new spot that should be unprotected we can do that.
@MineKill: Yes, building with the terrain is great for this server, but in reality, most players want to make a flat spot to build, and that leads to big eyesores on mountain stilts.
Towns compress the players into smaller groups to stop the crazy spread of houses going into (-)3000 coords and making managing the server all around easier.
Compressing the groups give better business to shops as-well.
The towns will be built to flow with terrain, so when you get a lot in the towns, you will be building with the terrain.
Another thought that popped up into my head is, players start with a certain amount of Slime balls and they can buy an apartment in one of the designated apartment lots, this style of building can range from towers with rooms or mini villages.
You can live in this housing while you gather supplies and get some work to earn enough money to buy a permanent house lot in a town.
I am not sure what style you guys want for a server... maybe some of you want it to be all out SMP with no changes, but I prefer the style of RPG like servers with currencies and jobs.

I've been reading up on some of the economy mods and it looks like you can set them up in way that allows people to use currency to buy plots of land to build on, which might be kind of cool.
I would like to play on the server. I know nothing about setting one up but I think I could be a good mod. I have been following the original original thread from the start if that matters. I once was an admin of a good sized forum (dead and gone now) so I have some managing skills.
Landscape protection is good.
Teleports to important landmarks would be good that everyone can use.
Everyone should get one protected house. As for tools I say make your own. Some servers have wooden tool handouts which is fine.
Locked chests are good. (I sometimes play on a fully pvp server and hiding chests is getting annoying)
Economy, I have never played on a RP economy server but it sounds like fun. I do play A LOT of rpgs.
I think monsters should be turned on but nerf creepers so they don't mess up all the pretty landscape. I still want to be able to kill spiders for string and zombies for arrows and pigs for meat and so on.
I'm not too fond of health regeneration. (Kill a pig and eat it. Lazy people.) If the server is going to be just a build stuff server (which will ruin the landscape) why have health regeneration? Let's Survive and Thrive.
That's all I can think of atm. I would love to help mod/admin but will still play even if I'm not picked. I have a mic and access to lots of different messaging software. I think I have an account on almost every messenger ever made. Skype included, for conference voice calls.

I see what you mean about the health re-gain, but would it really hurt if you could add a really slow health re-gain like 10 seconds for 1 heart? I have no clue if that is possible, but if not, then no health re-gain would be good.

I suppose that would be ok but it goes against my Hardcore Icon and play style. It's not a huge thing that would make me not want to play but if monsters are off then it would be needed. I don't want to farm wheat and gather mushrooms just for the sake of healing my fall damage. However the server turns out I'm sure I will be happy.
Thanks for the offer to host this Brainspackle!! Shrooms for you my friend.
As for the size of the server (which I forgot to mention) here are my ideas:
Have a very small community of trusted players exploring and making the map bigger and getting us a good map with landmarks and resources and all the fun stuff mapped. Explore with a friend. Spelunking with a friend can be fun. Don't have to worry about greifers and rollbacks. (much). Strict application policy that needs multiple approvals from different people.
Or we could go toward let all in and try to micromanage everyone and put in protections and designate cities and where to build. Try to keep the pretty stuff intact. I would be willing to help out doing this but I'm more partial to having a small community. It also depends on how many players at a time Brainspackle can host. Sometimes I wish I had my own server and I could mold it to my liking, but then I remember I don't want to pay hosting costs and don't have any hookups to get a free server. I will mold to what the majority wants.
Please don't take this out of context. I don't want to sound like "I'm the host!! I am GOD!! Bow or be banned!". I just would like to help out on a server in my spare time. I don't have a job atm so I have ample time to put in. I play a lot of minecraft but I might go on a few day spree when Mortal Kombat 2011 comes out later this month and I got an RPG to finish. But I am available. I still spend a lot of time on the computer. I hope I'm not digging myself a hole or pushing my way in. I'm there if you need me. Sorry for the teeldeer.

I would also like to be part of this server, I'm glad someone is using this map and I want to join an active community that will have defineable goals and ideas to contribute too. I want to make a beautiful city and underground/underwater fortress, a rail system, etc...I don't think I'd make a good mod purely because I don't have experience, but I want to be in the plans to help.
The other servers I've toured a bit had protection, but no overall design set with them. It was neat going through the world and seeing lots of different places, like water temples, fire buildings, shops, etc...but It's hard to get people working together on well established servers.
You absolutely need mods for anti griefing, and locking stuff.
It should be played on easy or normal.
Mobs should be on.
Economy idea is interesting, but I don't like the idea of having to hunt down consumables just to get more items.
As a systems administrator for a hosting company, access to personal servers is a fringe benefit I have and being a lover of this map, would love to run a server for us all with it.

A Golden Notch for you!

Best way to keep the great look of this server is to protect land marks and to create "Towns", towns would be the only place players can build a house (it keeps the server looking neat and tidy, also keeps players grouped up in a smaller area then spread out into the (-)1,000s). [...] Also, I wonder if we can move some of the houses of the people on this thread into the server.... or at least spawn ourselves the things to re-create them
My comment: Towns surrounded by rural areas with farms, mansions and stuff. I do not want to live in a city. Even on Minecraft.

Just FYI guys, I know I said I'd have this up tonight - I was a bit too optimistic I'm afraid.
Take your time, we will be waiting with zenlike patience as someone put it in the very first thread. I think the result will reflect the amount of time spent on learning, testing and planning.
Now, with my own words:
I am looking forward to this so much that I jumped up and down screaming like an overexited child on christmas when I read Brainspackels first post. But:
I have never played multiplayer, never PvP or any of the things you guys mention, on ANY game. I dont even know what whitelist is. I have played a total of maybe 20 minutes on other than peaceful since I started in December, every minute was sheer terror. Even the cave- and portal sounds makes my heart pound and I prefer branch mining to spelunking (yes, on peaceful).
With this in mind, I have a question: is there a way to make an area free from hostile mobs? *blushing*
Also, I wont be any help in planning this. But since I am kind of controlling when it comes to style and order I have a suggestion. Maybe we could, either agree of a building style, or agree to have diffrent styles in diffrent places, like for example a city with modern buildings, a town with western style, a rural english willage or futuristic airborn settlement. I find it very disturbing if things are chaotic and mismatching. I will also be happy to help with landscaping, planning roads and buildingspots.

Just FYI guys, I know I said I'd have this up tonight - I was a bit too optimistic I'm afraid. I've been spending most of the evening reading and learning how best to run a server and now have it up but am experimenting with some anti-griefing mods and such. Plus, I'm eager to hear Pink Wool's comments before I make my mind up on anything as she is the reason I discovered this wonderful seed and the reason why people are still discussing this seed and seems interested in a server for it, so she has a big voice in this by default :wink.gif:
Also, I'm testing out some anti-grief mods and I could use some help. If you'd be willing to help me test stuff out so we can find the best solution before going "live" then please PM some way I can chat with you in real time (AIM, Gtalk, Skype is best for me) and we can play around with some mods and share our thoughts on them.
First, I am a posting noob, but reading this make me wish that politicians put this much thought into government. I think it is really cool how much thought can go into Minecraft, it is one of the things that I love about the game.
Second, as a posting noob, I realize my opinion has little weight and I am ok with that, but if I am ever going to earn a spot on this server, I have to start now.
It seems to me that we could have a national park system here. We have some specific locations that everyone agrees are important as they are, so lets turn them into offical parks. As people find new things, they are presented to the group for inclusion in the park system for protection.
I like the town idea, but some people like to live in a hermet house and just come to town on occasion for supplies, and I think the RPG element of the ecomony is nice.
In response to Pink Wool (the mightly one who has kept this going for all of us), the fun of SMP can be that you don't have to go spelunking alone. The mobs are freaky sometimes down in the caves, but with two or three people going down together it is not so bad.

Welcome to our fellowship dear Noob.
If I understand you right sir, I can have 2 knights to follow me to the caves and protect me from all sorts of hideous monsters waiting to harm me? Can I have some servants do the mining for me too?
I understand that others do not like the towns so much, so I Thought of a simple way to get people to (Maybe) change their oponion on the matter to the way I want it
Ok, Pink Wool will like this reason:
Towns will be a safe spot from mobs.
And as for you free building hermits:
The chance to make your own town will be available, but the towns plans must be cleared before starting.
You can build outside of towns, but you must get your building cleared and it is more expensive then building in a town, so you will most likely be in a town house before you buy a place outside of town.
And for the people who hate building and all they want to do is slam some dirt and wood down to make a house to protect their :
Pre-made houses will be available for purchase!
Ok, and I would like to help grief test that server, I am experienced with testing grief proofing.
And yes, new players should be slaves... so we can have them groom my pig
Moar words by me (your choice to read them or not):
I do not like the idea of having a "Modern city" on this server, honestly.
I am more of a fantasy medieval style builder myself, and modern cities don't belong in minecraft.
also, if any of you are thinking that towns would be cramped with walk ways in a grid form and walls all over the place, you are wrong, the towns will be open and look great I will make sure of that.

Can I have some servants do the mining for me too?
;-D
