500 slots? That's a lot of slots, so I'm going to go ahead and guess that it'll be very very expensive. You better have quite the server idea.

Wrong sir, wrong. YOU stole the fizzy lifting drinks and YOU touched the ceiling, therefor it must be washed and sterilized! So you get nothing! You lose! Good day sir!
For around $550 / mo. We could either give you root or let you manage an MC server via our control panel on a dedicated box, whichever is more convenient for you.
We can boost the clock speed on the processor somewhat as well if needed. Pricing will obviously change based on what your needs are (ie less memory, more memory, different processor).
The amount that you'll need will obviously change based on your server configuration but we think a setup like that should be fine based on our pre-established averages.
SSD would be a must, theres another $30 /month depending on the size.
Also about the VPS prices, it's because VPS's are not specific you can do plenty of different things on there. Yet with a Minecraft server you are tied down to only Minecraft.
You could run a 500 slot server on any setup. However if the server is really going to have 500 players on it I'm unaware of any CPU that would support that as Minecraft can only use a single core. If it was overclocked you could do so not sure how performance would be it's also not good to run servers overclocked.
Only one that I know of right now, AMD might have one but nobody serious buys AMD's for their servers heh. Not sure about OC on that one but I imagine anything is possible. We could do an i3 alot cheaper as well.
Anyone can explain me why one gb of ram vps costs 55€ while a minecraft server with 1 gb costs 13$?
Since MC uses little amount of CPU and hostages don't give alot of CPU power to the servers while vps has a good CPU?
Sorry for the double post but please dont offer me your services.
I'm just asking , I can get a freeserver with any specs I wish , I think I'll go with 100 slots first.
Can anybody answer the above questions and how much ram I need for 100 slots? 3-4 gm?
@OP: Price would probably be $500+ a month.
You can probably find some high end servers at http://databasebydesignllc.com or http://limestonenetworks.com. I know that http://webnx.com offers some good deals as well.
As for specs, you probably want a fast processor, like the new E3-1230/E3-1270 with at least 16GB of RAM. Perhaps even consider the Intel Xeon X5680's if you're looking into more cores and support for more RAM.
As other people said above, an SSD is crucial.
I'm yet to find a VPS provider that can provide true access to 100% of the servers CPU like game servers can. Limiting factors on OpenVZ is just way too easy, and the design behind the architecture itself is geared towards overselling. When you're running a MC server it's surely alot better to be on a carefully managed server rather than a VPS; if you need that extra power due to a huge TNT blast or a surge of players, the capability is there, on a VPS you're not really sure what to expect until you get there, no? This is from the perspective of the customer obviously, if you're a VPS host that provides MC servers in specific the settings will be changed, but generally VPS hosts which provide MC hosting at the same time can't really be considered mainstream VPS hosts, which is what I'm referring to.
MeteorVPS and the other VPS hosts here in MC are more-so seemingly focused on MC, you can't really compare them to mainstream VPS hosts because they're basically just game hosts with more freedom :-)
While I do personally use VPS for a different reason (clustering / cloud setup for market tracking). The only VPS service I haven't had issues with is the ones provided by mt, but I doubt you'll want to run an MC server on one of those.
> In terms of the i3, it's worthless. It's still HT'd so the cores are still shared (technically) It would be better to have the 2 physical cores or turn off the HT on the CPU
You can disable HT via bios & the os layer without a problem. Nothing but problems with AMD in my own experience, there's a reason behind Intel being a market leader on every front IMO, but to each his own, arguing AMD vs Intel is like arguing Windows vs Mac - it's pointless :-)

We could do a setup for you that:
E3-1270 3.4Ghz H/T 8 log cores
24GB DDR3
128GB SSD
1Gbit

Ya I mean on like an actual 25/7 server not a server that is up just for the point of record breaking.

Best sentence in the entire post, unfortunately.
