I think he means that their quality of machine is more suited to Big businesses.
Their quality of machine is suited to any business that wants quality hardware - you don't have to be big to rent these servers, you just have to be big to rent a lot of them and be able to make profit off of them for a service. Companies pay more than you think for their hardware (real companies with offices, not 16 year olds reselling VPSes).
Where have you got this idea of "Reselling VPSes"?
I wasn't referring to you specifically, but 80% of the small hosts around here are just reselling VPSes from other companies.

Edit: Oh, and what's ping time have to do with anything? Ping is the measurement of distance traveled from one computer to the next, not a measurement of speed. You can pull full gigabit over 1000ms just as you can over 10ms.
Are you being serious? the difference in 1000 and 10ms IS 1 SECOND IN LATENCY (LAG)
a "ping" is a measure of data by time. not distance. distance is a factor. but it is a factor in all global routing.

The data will still be received in the same amount of time from the first packet's arrival, just 990ms later. mbps is a meter of how much data can be transmitted per second overall, not how long it takes for that data to get from point A to point B. Therefor, my gbit connection can certainly be better and faster than your gbit connection. I think you should learn more about TCP/IP and the internet in general before you start making comparisons with other companies.

This is a contradiction. You just stated that a congested network, would deliver the data 990ms SLOWER. And that is if not to many packets are not lost in transmission. I think you have a lot to learn my friend. I think you need to question your skill. not mine.

Read my edit, what I meant was it will be received in the same amount of time from when the first packet is received. It's only the initial start of data transfer that would be affected by ping. You claim that because we both have ports capable of pushing 1000mbit a second, that your connection and my connection is exactly the same - which is obviously wrong and what I was trying to prove wrong. Packet loss is also not caused by ping, it's caused by poor BGP routing and crappy peers.
Also, I don't suggest you get into questioning my skill. There's a reason my company took over this entire market in 4 weeks flat and we're selling as many as you have active since your existance, daily.

I completely understand this, but maybe WHT or GSPTalk would more suited for this.
I'm pretty sure the subforum dedicated to minecraft server hosting is the perfect place to discuss things related to minecraft server hosting, but whatevs - it's your opinion. :smile.gif:

As an example, think of the internet as a big postal delivery system. UPS may be faster than Fedex, but Fedex has more trucks. Fedex can send out 10 trucks with your packages after three days, whereas UPS can only send out 5 trucks but they do it after a day. This is similar to how internet uplinks work, what matters is a combination of both speed and throughput. There's a fundamental difference between the two.
In our case, UPS would be the best choice, as we -never- utilize the entire 1000mbit with Minecraft servers. The only reason we even have it there is in the case that a DDoS attack cannot be fully handled by Cisco Guard, our NIC can handle the overhead.

I'm not sure if people that don't understand how TCP/IP works should start up GSPs.
Now now children, there's no need to get into a fuss over any of this.
Arguing over who has the better DC/network is pointless.. yes, Softlayer is huge and has a huge infrastructure, Atlantic.net is by no means a nobody in the business. We have customers from Hawaii to Sweden so obviously their network is sufficient for what we're using it for. We're happy to be working with them just as I'm sure others are happy with their DCs.
Also, JWJ.. congratulations on your success man, you definitely have done well, there's no arguing that. However, you offer a different type of service than we do, which obviously appeals to a larger audience within this niche, which is awesome, you've cornered it well... but your incessant need to brag and use your customer numbers to berate other companies trying to carve out their own corner just makes you look like a cocky *****.
We're doing well for ourselves and are constantly growing, we've been able to go from having 2 colocated servers to buying out a rack in our own cage with hardware we own, within a couple months and our reputation as a quality host is still holding strong.. which we are very happy with.
There's no point in e-peen flexing or arguing over who can push the most packets or who has the fattest uplink pipes.. we're all offering a service and as long as we're all offering the best quality of service possible to our customers and not burning them in any fashion, as we've seen with multiple other GSPs who have tried to start up in the Minecraft craze...there's no reason we can't all get a piece of the pie and do well in our individual ventures.

If you ask anyone that knows me, I don't attack other hosts unprovoked. I'm one for peace, I don't like arguing with other GSPS, but people questioning my knowledge is one of my pet peeves. Minecraft.cm is a perfectly good, legit provider and I never said you weren't. :smile.gif:
For that matter, I've actually written entire threads outlining my experiences in starting a GSP to help others follow my footsteps. I'm one to share the secrets of my success (well, besides the actual company R&D).
