They sold too many tickets. And there were too many children. It lacked structure in the activities. The Future of Minecon panel was more about the past. Realms is too niche so it kinda stinks as a promo gift. Costumes were cool. The artwork was fantastic. I loved the barn. Notch interview was fun. Children need to learn what a line is, and parents need to learn that you cannot bully another adult to let their kid cut in line (yeah that happened and it didn't work haha). Islands of Adventure was fun. But the after party is by invite only 21+ so that is lame because I really feel that being 21+ I should be able to go.
I don't regret going. I had an okay time. It wasn't worth $150 due to lack of stuff to do. This probably had more kids than the past MInecons. They also did not have enough Minecon shirts which I am sad about. I won't go again. It just wasn't good enough. I am not a child and I don't watch youtube videos. So it didn't really appeal to me. And that is kinda sad. It would have been nice if it had something for all different players. But if youtube is your thing I am sure you had a fantastical time. :-)

Oh man.. By the post here and the one on the topic regarding how a person was upset about not being able to get a ticket, I can tell you're spoiled beyond belief. The words you say look like a joke, seriously. It's really too bad someone else didn't get your ticket, after all, it doesn't seem like you enjoyed it.

You really hit the nail on the head with a lot of those statements. Definitely too many tickets sold. You could only really go to 3 of the 12 panels per day because you had to stand in line hours ahead of time to get a seat. I missed out on the Mindcrack panel today because I only arrived 40 minutes early instead of 60+ mins early.
Really mad at children and lack of control from their parents. People mobbed around Jeb at Universal last night to get autographs. I was so close to him but kids barely taller than my hips kept squeezing between people's legs and cutting around the back of the line to sneak in. Meanwhile, the parents are just there smiling and watching as their children shove strangers out of the way and take away everything that is fair. Jeb got so boxed in that he announced he was leaving so I didn't end up with anything from him. I did get to meet Dinnerbone before the start of day 1 though.
Also sad that I didn't get a Minecon tshirt. They had completely sold out of every size men's shirts by the morning of day 2 and only had outrageous women's sizes. ThinkGeek also sold out of just about everything, including the 4,000+ foam swords and pickaxes they had stocked.
In conclusion though, I think it was worth the $150. Though I didn't get to meet many of my "heros" in person, it was great seeing them not through a computer screen. The Minecraft Experience and the barnyard was unbelievable!
They sold too many tickets. And there were too many children. It lacked structure in the activities.
Yeah thats all about right.
I was at Minecon 2012 last year, and the big difference for me was that I kept bumping into the B-Team.. The mindcrack guys where actually there as attendees, I saw them sitting in the audience for a lot of other panels... and rather than being mobbed by an endless stream of kids at every turn. I even had a nice friendly conversation with GenerikB in the hotel bar...
This year opening was delayed mostly because a whole bunch of kids had decided they wanted Caveman films and some other guys autographs and could not be talked into getting out of the way sitting the hell down. When that cupquake girl and the guy she was with appeared at the opening there was loads of kids milling around trying to stop them leaving the stage to sign autographs.. despite the fact they where in the middle of going back stage, fortunately security was with them.
In the 'how to run a server' panel there was a whole bunch of kids who clearly had no interest in what was being said and started talking and moving around once they realized there was not going to be any YouTube stars to pester. Most of them left after about 20 minutes I'd say there was less than 1,000 people there in the end.. hard to tell with it being a huge hall tho.
There where people walking out of the opening ceremony to go next door and get in line to buy stuff, I spoke with a few parents during the whole thing who where really only there to escort their kids, and had no real interest in the game or the surroundings... One mother was telling me all about her plan to buy multiple things from Target and then get it signed by as many people as she could with the express purpose of selling them on ebay..
If you thought the ebay ticketing was bad wait until you see all the junk that shows up now it's over...
And really thats part of the reason the tickets sold out so quick, the number of 'families' there, when only 1 of them played the game.. I over heard a huge argument going on back in my hotel with one family, about how much time they had 'wasted' at the convention and why could not they goto Disney..
I have no idea who that girl was at the Closing ceremony, or why having her on to promote her itunes account was really connected to anything.. and as to that hugely original Miley Cirrus parody with more blackscreen than talent... well I guess it's better than last years endless repetition of that gad awful Gandam style monstrosity..
In summary, I did enjoy myself, I met some nice people had a good enough time... but I'm on the fence about if I'd goto next years, It depends on where it is really.. and if its going to be such a such a 'family' event again..
I've seen the argument here and elsewhere that there bulk of the games player base are under 14... and I guess I should of expected what I got.. but that does not stop me wishing there was a more 'adults only' options for minecon, for people who are actually interested in the game and dont just want autographs and to ask Notch 'whats your favourite block?'
This was my first Minecon, and overall I had a great experience though due to volunteering. I would totally agree and understand with some of the previous comments above. Yes, there were a lot of people there and it was very hard to get to a good panel. I volunteered and STILL have to wait in line like everyone else since we were told our Agent badges could not be used to cut the line. Although if you were schedule to help out with panel rooms you could catch them while working. A lot of complaints BEFORE Minecon was there wasn't enough ticket sold or I couldn't get a ticket well now this just proves that the more people you have the less quality of an experience you have. From the beginning my opinion on how many tickets should be sold was always at a minimum and that still holds true after the end of this year's Minecon. We had to cap Youtube autograph lines since they were so long and a lot of people couldnt get autographs, panel rooms were also limited to seating due to capacity allowances for each room under local fire codes, merchandise was quickly depleted by so many people buying although we Mojang has no control on inventory for each vendor so whatever the vendor bought is what they had, almost every line for anything was really long and you had to get there very early for the more popular panels. I don't see how selling more tickets would be beneficial for everyone in the future, in fact if they keep going higher with attendance allowances I really think it would be disastrous and many more people will get upset. So what should be a solution? Maybe offer regional Minecons kinda something like Pax Prime/East but have you seen the lines/crowds for those conventions?! Have a lottery to give everyone a fair chance at purchasing tickets? In the end I really think they should keep it a little smaller to have a better experience for all but I also understand it would cut out a lot of fans from going. There has to be a line drawn sadly.

I have gone to PAX East for the past three years and I am going in 2014. Still trying to get to Prime hehe! But I live in Boston so going to East is pretty easy for me. That being said, PAX isn't so bad. Yes the expo hall can be terrible with lines. But there is a lot of other stuff to do. There are many different panels that appeal to all different topics. There are all different competitions and game rooms. They also split the board game vendors, the various stuff vendors, the indie games, and the big video games. So it works okay. They have a lot more people, but they go to the BCEC which is huge. So they can support the lines. Saturday it was so hard being where the activities were due to 7500 tickets and not enough stuff to do. You have to have a lot of space for lines and more options if you are going to sell 3,000 more tickets. People that think they should sell more really don't understand.
I also feel there could have been more structured activities. For instance, they could have had timed signups for competitions that ran so many rounds and a final on the second day such as team builds, PvP, scavenger hunts, etc. I did a minecraft scavenger hunt in 2012 at PAX and it was so much fun! I love doing competitions. But all they offered was just PvP that was just going in and doing it like at home but on new maps. It wasn't really a structured competition, and I don't do PvP. Nothing offered there!
I left 45 minutes before the closing ceremony. I just couldn't take the kids anymore. And I knew the big announcement was going to be Realms and Twitch which really don't apply to me. The winners of the costume contest were already announced the day before so I didn't really feel I needed to stick it out.
I didn't have a bad time. It is really a one day event though. I think Mojang did what they did well. But it was very niche. I probably won't go to another because it does not appeal to all players. It is really a youtube kid fest. And why would anyone be interested in that who does not fit into at least one of those criteria at the price of the tickets plus expenses? I don't regret going. In fact I am glad I did go! And I hope people that went did have a good time.
And I want to say this about kids...
Kids may play a lot of Minecraft (especially after Xbox) but that doesn't mean adults that play don't have a place. It were the adult players that funded the game in Alpha and Beta. It would have been neat to talk to one or two of the people from Mojang about technical things or about other game industry things but they were so bombarded by kids I didn't want to bother them. There were multiple times I could have said something to someone but I didn't want to interrupt their kid break. And the kids at the Notch interview asking those questions... So inappropriate! And that girl with with the mental disability being sent by her father to shill for his server or whatever it was... I was speechless! There were so many questions that could have been asked that were not due to kids. And the fact parents refused to control their kids is horrendous! You think they never heard of manners.

First off I am not spoiled. I am not a child. I did have fun for the most part. I didn't have fun for about an hour after I used the Oculous Rift due to serious motion sickness. And being in costume with motion sickness is never fun. But it is still pretty cool. Did you go? I don't see how you can judge if you didn't. And I can see why people may not like you. You make dumb statements.
Serious question. How did they decide who escorted the bigger youtube guys throughout? Or were they always a paid staff instead of volunteer?
Hai Coconut I can answer the question. Most of the bigger youtubers who had escorts/guards were paid. The only time volunteers chipped in were when people asked or things got out of hand.

I wasn't there for the YTers, and I had plenty of fun. The Oculus was probably my favorite (although it is something I've been wanting to do for about a year). Were there really kids at the Running A Server panel just for YTers? LOL. I enjoyed that panel (I was the one who asked about on server ads).
I wanted to go...but with the $150 price tag I immediately knew it wasn't worth it. Even if it is only a 30min drive from my house. I had a feeling it would be kind of a let down, compared to what was to be expected. They really should have priced this thing at sub $100. I feel bad for those who paid the $150 AND the price of the trip to Florida plus hotel.
About the parents controlling kids: This is a huge problem down here in Tourist Capitol USA. I've lived here for about 14 years now, and the behavior described above is basically what I experience every time I go to Disney or Universal: Kids out of control and parents outright ignoring them...
This was my first convention ever and I really did enjoy it. I agree with the kids being a bother however I am a pretty patient person so they didn't get to me too much. I didn't go to many panels, only the two relating to mods, because I felt like my time could be better spent than waiting in line listening to kids whine. I did spend a lot of time around the indie game area, specifically Eden Star, which was fun talking with the developers. Overall I would say that it wasn't structured very well but had a wonderful time anyways.
On a side note, the way some of those kids talk to their parents...I would have been locked away in the hotel room all day if I ever talked to my parents that way when I was their age.
The convention had it's pros and cons in end, but was a ton of a fun no matter what and went by too quick. I had a blast. $150 was a great price, the perfect price in my opinion. Paid a lot more for the plane tickets and hotel, but the overall experience was a great one and can't wait for next years.
I am sorry, but minecraft is a game aimed at children.
Disagree. I don't think Minecraft is aimed at any particular demographic and is certainly not aimed at children. It started with the teenage and older generation on PC, but as it opened up to new platforms (XBOX and mobile) and got more publicity, more children started playing because they had easier access. I would bet that the PC version consists of mostly aged 15-20 players.
the only thing i have to complain about is the fact that panels where Sooooo close together in time you could only make it to 2 or 3 if you were lucky. Another thing is there where WAY to many people. like people said, if you wanted to do anything you have to show up 40-60 minutes early and sense all the panels’ where so close together that means you HAVE to miss a few to make it into any others.
Also. The age restriction REALLY needs to come back the entire opening ceremony was held up 15 minutes because a bunch of little kids wanted autographs right then and there. It really sucks because I met some really well behaved mature kids who were just having a great time. Removing the age restriction also meant allot of wasted tickets on escorting adults who allot of where frankly quite bitter and regretted coming. So yeah, if you couldn’t get a ticket and tried to buy one just keep in mind the hundreds of parents who didn’t even want to be there :3 there where also several issues with kids running off from parents one such time they even interrupted the closing ceremony just to call someone up to find his parents(all kids where found). I also think this year’s minecon was geared more towards "family" which was why the 13 year old age restriction was removed, which is cool but also excludes the vast majority of us who are the only ones in our family who play minecraft…
I don’t mind kids. I really don’t, I mind when there are thousands of them with angry parents who let them run wild like they are on a playground. Other than those two things minecon was amazing easily the greatest weekend ever for me i met amazing people got some sweet autographs learned some cool stuff and overall had a good time. I’m defiantly going again next year with the hope that mojang does 2 things:
one: Age restriction is reintroduced. That means more actual PLAYERS get tickets insted of escorts, more mature atmosphere with less caous, line cutting, and screaming as well as actually being able to hear the panels.
two: sell less tickets or get a bigger place. The exhibit hall was completely packed all the time and it was shoulder to shoulder in most areas. There would be less lines and more space.

Or maybe he just didn't enjoy the convention because, as he said, it was tailored mostly to the kids and people who watch Youtube. And he didn't get an invite to the only adult function? Not enjoying it doesn't make him spoiled, he just had a bad time. Just because he didn't lick Jeb's glorious butthole about being blessed by the almighty Gods to get to go doesn't mean he is spoiled. He was just expecting a different experience.

The problem with the truth, is that it never lies.
I believe Minecraft is really meant for everyone from the young to the old. Like Lydia said during the closing ceremonies. They had a 98 year old woman that was there with her young grandson and they both enjoy MInecraft. Yes, there were a bunch of children and kids at Minecon running around, being obnoxious but there were some that were totally mature and polite ones that were exemplary, Guess what?, there were also some adults that were surprisingly very rude. We encountered two grown men complaining at the info booth and let me tell you these guys were one step away from a full blown rage. I was seriously thinking one of them was going to get into a fist fight with me because he was that upset after I told everyone not to run and slow down from the main steps. The other guy looked like he was going to blow a vein on his forehead for not getting one autograph for his poster out of the two dozen of so signatures he already had of others. He kept demanding to talk to someone in a higher position and we kept going back and forth with him. So yea, back to my point, Minecraft has no age limits or restrictions it's a game where anyone can sit down and let their imagination run. We have people from all walks of life that play it so to just isolate it to a certain demographic doesn't really hold true.
Serious question. How did they decide who escorted the bigger youtube guys throughout? Or were they always a paid staff instead of volunteer?
I didn't directly work with the escort department but I do know there were Mojang staff, OCCC security, and volunteer Agents that helped with escorting. Some was planned and some was based on the crowds forming at the time. Additional help was called in when needed. Volunteers of course were not paid but the other two were most likely.
And he didn't get an invite to the only adult function?
What is this adult-only function you speak of? I know in Minecon 2011 they had a 21+ club event with a DJ, but I'm not aware of anything like that this year. I'm 25 and was with a 24 year old (arguably very much adults), and this is the first I've heard of this.

There would be less lines and more space.
this is definatlly true.
I didn't directly work with the escort department but I do know there were Mojang staff, OCCC security, and volunteer Agents that helped with escorting. Some was planned and some was based on the crowds forming at the time. Additional help was called in when needed. Volunteers of course were not paid but the other two were most likely.
