Yeh good on him for having the balls to stand up against it. Indie finds a way around these things run by the big companies (when they become too focussed on spamming ads, collecting data, and changing things against community wishes) anyway!
Facebook is getting as bad as google. Buying things, and shoving their stupid social network into it despite no one wanting, or asking for it.
What a few people that don't agree with this don't seem to realize, is that the Oculus was originally designed for games. It's whole purpose was games. People got early dev versions and everything, specifically to make games work with it. And then they go and sell it to facebook, a company that has NOTHING to do with proper games. There's no need for the Oculus to have anything to do with facebook. There's nothing on facebook that even makes sense to be on an Oculus.
The only thing I can imagine them doing, is adding some kind of "share to facebook" button, and charging twice the price.
I agree with notch. Facebook is on a rampage grabbing any popular game or software they can. Stay away from them. This is including Google. Look what happen to youtube
The funniest part here is that all the people trashing Facebook, are probably running off to Facebook to post about it to their friends.....
Seriously, this is the most immature "business" decision I've ever seen. Canning a huge deal that most of your customers probably still want, based solely on the fact a company "creeps you out"? Yeah... real business like. The only one who pays for Notch's irrational paranoia are the MC fans looking forward to official Oculus support. All these wild conspiracy theories flying around about the future of the Oculus now that Facebook owns it are baseless at this point. Its almost certainly going to be delivered as the product everyone expected, perhaps just a little quicker. The ideas that its somehow not going to work with games, or that its going to be a lesser quality product, or that you will need to run it through Facebook are crazy. Sure, Facebook might develop functions for the Rift.... but so what? The notion that VR would stay in the realm of gaming and only gaming is equally crazy.
You know, Notch is a very unremarkable man for what he does. Anyone who has modded MC knows that his programming ability is terrible, his game design ability is questionable, and he is clearly no businessman. He would probably not be able to get a job with any major game development studios with his lack of talent. Yet he got incredibly lucky with Minecraft, a mash up of features borrowed from other games (that itself started as a clone of another game) with no originality what so ever... and he should accept that lightning doesn't strike twice, take his millions, and retire somewhere never to be heard from again laughing all the way. It would be the best possible thing for the future of Minecraft and the gaming community as a whole if he just vanished, because far too many people view him as some sort of expert on game development... and its never good when unremarkable and untalented people are viewed as experts.
So if Notch is such an idiot and minecraft and it's community sucks, why are you here?
People have far too much of a "love/hate" view of Facebook, and gamers are typically in the "hate" category (and rightly so). That alone is going to stifle their success (Notch immediately jumping ship is a prime example), and that won't help them to be able to sell whatever they end up peddling.
EA has made some of the buggiest, and frustratingly glitchy games ever made, but those games still sell well.
Apple makes ridiculously overpriced electronic devices, that were made for possibly less than 10$ by some notorious company in china (Foxconn) that provided terrifying working conditions, yet those devices are still universally successful.
Microsoft has had sort of a control-freak/market-manipulation attitude with their OS's, yet they are still the biggest PC company in North America.
What makes Facebook any different?
Oh, and there goes my plans of buying an Oculus rift headset in the near-future... thanks Facebook.
Facebook has the same vision for Oculus that everyone else did, they're helping by buying it out so Oculus can develop it twice as fast and get a cheaper consumer model way before they anticipated. Facebook isn't going to crap all over Oculus like everyone is saying. Everyone saying that is uninformed. "Immersive gaming will be the first, and Oculus already has big plans here that won't be changing and we hope to accelerate. The Rift is highly anticipated by the gaming community, and there's a lot of interest from developers in building for this platform. We're going to focus on helping Oculus build out their product and develop partnerships to support more games. Oculus will continue operating independently within Facebook to achieve this."
I think you will find that everyone has, in fact, read that article. It is not hard - not hard at all - to read between the lines of why Facebook did this, both as a business decision and as a means of acquiring information. In the times to come, information will be power, quite literally. Facebook has made an extreme long-term investment in buying out OR. They've gotten the jump on a massive chunk of the existing opposition before the competition has really gotten off the ground.
What scares us is their intentions for this technology. They're no different from most of the other communications/media giants that currently exist; you would probably find the same arguments popping up with Microsoft or Google had bought it out. People don't want to be subjected to data mining. For the most part, we value our privacy.

Classic defamation. Seriously, are they paying you for this drivel?
I must be one of the few dissenters with Notch here. Of course it is wierd that Facebook bought OR. google should have done it. Or Microsoft. And somebody would have a beef with that as well because they don't like those companies.
Any of these companies would have caused the unease that you're seeing posts about. Facebook is simply the most blatant about what it does.
Personally, I would have done the same, in Notch's position. Regardless of whether it was Facebook, Google, Microsoft or any of a number of other companies buying it. If a company is known for data mining, I want absolutely nothing to do with it. I would avoid it like the plague it is.

I'm glad to see that Facebook is too poor to buy out Google's glass. I mean, yeah there goes VR for MC, but imagine if Facebook Controlled Google.Adding on to what I've said, a lot of people are jumping on the "VR for Social Networking" bandwagon. I have yet to see any proof that OR will be used for Social media at all. Maybe Facebook just wants to profit more from the gaming industry. I mean, Disney has released p0rn0s, just not under the same name as Disney. They just do it for profit.
Ah farmville in 3d... I used to play that stuff regularily, then I discovered Minecraft... was so much more fun... Disappointed about Oculus. I was looking forward to it. I just do not trust facebook with it.

Yes, at least Notch is like me regarding Facebook, this thing is too big today's and all they care about is how much private information they can get from the users, I will never ever sell or give my privacy to them, I got a facebook account, but I never ever do anything except communicate with family and I have nothing on facebook that I wouldn't allow anyone to see, the only friends I have on facebook are people I see regularly, I never ever accepted anyone that I never seen in real life and if I don't see someone in real life that isn't part of my family for more than 1 month, they are out of my facebook friends list except for a few selected ones.
The only thing I'm worried about is some people already got an occulus rift and enjoy Minecraft with it, does it mean its dead for them and they spent their hard earned money on this high tech gadget that won't be compatible with their favorite game anymore ???
The stupid must be strong with peoplke today. "GO NOTCH, PIMPSLAP FAILBOOK"Do you idiots even realize how good this is for Oculus? 2 billion dollars, to make the best VR they can make? And people are just dropping them because facebook owns oculus now? you do realize that they dont care if they lose money on oculus, because as long as it gets out there, they wont care! oculus will remain independent, and evertything will be fine.

My God. People cannot be this stupid.
Do you even have any clue why people are agreeing with Notch? Facebook has been doing some shady . Oculus creators work for Facebook now. Facebook can now change features and such for Oculus. They can extend their unethical business practices to the Oculus.
Anyone who's saying that Notch's making a bad business decision doesn't have any understanding of what business ethics is. Ethics is an important part of business.
I have the feeling that mr.facebook finds the idea of the Metaverse (Social Virtual Network) a cool idea. Buying Oculus is simply a great way for them to invest in something, that they believe they will be able to make cool software for in the future. We don't know if they will keep their promise about letting the OR team do their thing by them self, but I have a feeling they will. With the money they have provided OR can become a better and cheaper product.
In the end we do not know if it will be bad or not and I can understand why people dislike Facebook. But lets not cry wolf before we actually see Facebook influencing the gaming part in a negative way.
Also... Facebook is NOT behind Farmville It is Zynga you are thinking about. They simply used the Facebook API and integrated with the site like all other Facebook games/apps.
thank you... SOMEONE who understands that facebook (not one of my favorite companies either) isn't trying to dictate this wonderful device they are supporting it with loads of cash... and it has already been stated they keep the freedom of there own company. just think of facebook "Backing" the rift with 2 B.... now we can expect development to be faster and in the end a cheaper more developed Rift..

On the bright side, we won't go insane from the unreal physics of Minecraft due to the deep sense of immersion from the Rift.
