Exactly, and some things that go under the hood are new commands. Which I get very excited about considering this means that Adventure maps are going to get alot more advanced.
Okay, the good:
-I LOVE the new Mega Tiaga biome! I have a new favorite biome!
-The new flowers are a nice touch, I especially like the sunflowers
-The new, more realistic look of Extreme Hills and Extreme Hills+, particularly the additional snow and barren, rocky "above the tree-line" look of the higher elevation peaks. Waterfalls look especially nice falling from these peaks down steeper cliffs.
-The new Ice Plain Spikes! (Can't wait to find one...)
-The Mesa Biome looks gorgeous!
The bad:
-Wow! Is it a PROBLEM riding horses! I don't use horses often, but I keep one in a stable for long distance travel, and since all the new biomes are very far from my explored land... First, there is horrible lag when riding horse, similar to the way it was when they first debuted. And the forests in newly generated land are actually worse than Jungles in terms of being impenetrable on horseback. Idk if this is a glitch or some new thing with tree placement in newer forests.
Other than that, I am pretty happy with the new update. Very cool new biomes to explore!

Sence no one else said it, right clicking on a doubletall flower with bonemeal drops a flower. So spamming a stack of bonemeal on a poppy gives you a stack of poppys. Nice to see it is possible to farm the large flowers. works for rosebush, lilac, poppy, and sunflowers.

me too it's actually ing me off i dont like this update at all it changes too much and why did they change the sugar cane and random flowers and stupid wood types... it seems too modded its stupid
I really don't like this update it's so awkward not hearing my player get hurt and I have to restart all my maps/my server map just to get the new features. I also think it's a little weird... i guess stained glass is cool but a birch wood biome? Whatt??? Why'd they have to change the sugarcane texture?? this isn't FTB :(... The flowers are cool but i think they went a little overboard with it. but the fishing is a great idea
I dont know, maybe I'm looking too into it but the one thing I CANT STAND is the fact i cant hear my player get hurt. it just seems so awkward
There seems to be a serious balance shift for some scarce items. As noted on another thread, cave systems are much less common and extensive, and that in turn has made dungeons much rarer. As noted on multiple threads, both deserts and jungles are also scarcer for most worlds, so very few temples. This seems to leave a distinct shortage of treasure chests!
Fishing can now provide saddles and nametags, but horse armor seems likely to be a problem....

I did some CraftTweaker scripts for Mystical Agriculture. They fill in a couple of small gaps in MA, and also let you make or duplicate not only vanilla plants, but the blocks, plants and wood from Quark and Biomes O'Plenty. Also spawn eggs for most vanilla mobs! The scripts are here on Github.
Worst update mojang could ever have made/it has way too many glitches. It takes away way more than it gives!!!! The texture (etc: beds, doors), the sounds (can't hear damage), the double click entry to server, the removal of server IPs being visible (honestly that was unnecessary), the random text color change when in your chest, the random text change/can't see the text for the potion effects, the ugly sugarcane, and the list goes on..
Obviously, stained glass and a birch wood biome isn't worth having the wonderful features that minecraft had..

You praise them with faint damns.
You're setting a handful of glitches and textures you "don't like" (more like "it changed! How dare they change something!"), against a dozen new biomes, new blocks, new fishing, and the internal work they're doing towards the API. Go eat some cheeze puffs and mellow out.

well the update is pretty cool, but i gata complain (its my nature o3o) ok so i have a very slow laptop (compaq presario cq167, i beleive) and i lag SOOOOO much i have mipmap levels at 0 render distance at 2 chunks and max fps all the way up can anybody give me an estimated release date for optifine? (i heard they changed alot of stuff making it harder for optifine so they might not update it, true?)
Wow! Now we have a ton of broken mods, biomes that perfectly good mods added in on their own, no option for beta worldgen, and best yet!
STILL NO MOD API!
Wow. This has to be the WORST update jeb has ever made.

I too love the new Extreme Hills with the barren rock and exposed coal seams - it reminds me of where I live. Only problem is that iron ore is quite rare along with trees - but cool to explore nevertheless.
...cave systems are much less common and extensive, and that in turn has made dungeons much rarer.
I noticed that too - and there seems to be more deep holes that seem to go almost straight down rather than twisting (deep enough to cause death by falling).
I did discover that a villager can fall 23 blocks into one without dying - that seems to have changed.
Very excellent update Mojang. It makes the world of Minecraft far more robust and explorable. Yet, ever since I got into playing Terraria awhile ago when the 1.2 update came out for it, I've felt like Minecraft has less of a purpose and I really can't see any other way of playing the game other than building stuff. I wish there was more to it than that because even the exploration and mining all seems like a means to an end, and that end is building artificial structures that don't really serve a purpose other than looking pretty.
Sure it's satisfying to dedicate yourself to a build and watch it form, but whereas in Terraria, there is a logical and addicting progression to things that give the game focus and playability. In Terraria there are bosses to conquer, difficult areas and enemies to overcome, and incredibly cool items and loot to obtain that enrich the experience and feel genuinely rewarding to obtain (wings that let you fly, magical weapons with various effects, and accessories that let you climb walls, double jump, or grapple with a hook onto surfaces). I know Minecraft is about freedom and all, but I really wish it didn't require you to make your own fun; at least give us an option. The game also desperately needs at least an item, armor, etc. that makes vertical travel quicker and more fun than just making block stairs. When I finally got a grappling hook in Terraria, it felt like Christmas morning.

ughh what we all needed in our world.. more gravel. Honestly I cant TAKE IT it's everywhere.........
Well, that, and the incredibly tall mountains. I commend the team on that.
But why aren't we seeing more effort put into content that isn't merely for vanity and actually adds to the gameplay?
If you were to make a painting of someone, you wouldn't start by drawing the eyelashes, would you?
