So much effort for something you could just build in 1 minute -.-
He did it to have fun and play around. He wanted to show this awesome invention he created.
Also, to the creator of this please and a link to download it so others can experience its awesomeness.
Given the HUGE level of patterning involved in that creation, I am guessing a tool like MCEdit used for cut & paste of sections that repeat themselves a lot was involved somehow, otherwise doing this fully only in Creative would take a really long time.
A 3D Printer that would work in survival would work much more slowly, yet would also be much simpler to make, using pistons and the same technique as self-repairing houses. But in both cases, these aren't true 3D printers.
The core difference between a true 3D printer and a vanilla MC version, in that in MC once the object is printed you can't pick it up and place it elsewhere. The object is stuck to the place it was printed until cleared. About as useful as cutlery to would be glued to the table, in a way.
So yeah the person who did this accomplished quite the incredible "feat" of engineering, but if he had put the same amount of energy into doing something really productive, he'd probably be much richer right now.
Still, quite the impressively massively extraordinary design.
Well, it's an impressive display of brute force, and an example of why we need an actual scripting language.
Separate hoppers for every possible color of every voxel? Egads.

I did some CraftTweaker scripts for Mystical Agriculture. They fill in a couple of small gaps in MA, and also let you make or duplicate not only vanilla plants, but the blocks, plants and wood from Quark and Biomes O'Plenty. Also spawn eggs for most vanilla mobs! The scripts are here on Github.

Yes the moon can be orange, you'll see it when the moon has just risen.
Cheese door, iron sky, happy Iceland. I just said random words. The reason of this: complete random, but the question is, why are you reading this?
I think you can compete with Sethbling, or maybe you have beaten him
