Easter eggs aren't usually designed to be useful, so there is no point in asking what the use of it is. It was probably something that one of the programmers randomly decided to do, just for the hell of it. God knows, the amount of programming they did in the update must have been boring as hell. They needed something just to laugh about, most likely, and rainbow sheep did the trick. I wonder if the programmer in question was inspired by the Twilight Forest...
Someone took a play from Farmville's book. Now THAT would be a trip--Farmville-style sheep and pig breeding!
Because I discovered Minecraft, I stopped playing farmville :3 I still love the fact the new stuff is free with the purchase of the original copy. Minecraft never gets dull... now what village do I want my rainbow sheep in? Oh the amusement park area :3

That is... interesting... what happens when you name something Notch? Or Grum? Anywho, that rainbow sheep will be hogging the attention in my zoo. And in my farm.

The more things change, the more they seem to stay the damn same.
I've stopped playing Minecraft years ago, but I'm still around to offer technical support.
If you're still reading this, have a wonderful day!

I don't think naming anything notch will do anything. As for Grum it will turn anything upside down like dinnerbone.
I have a server for my kids and I to play on and I was able to get it to work. Make sure you use "jeb_" with the lowercase 'j'. When I tried it with the uppercase 'J', it didn't work.
it isn't that easy to find easter eggs in the code, it is more like a real search for easter eggs on a field, except that the eggs are green. jeb mentioned prior to 1.7 that there are still many undiscovered easter eggs.
Hmmm... Now that you mentioned that, and most animal Easter eggs are about animals named jeb(upside down cow, rainbow sheep, etc), I'm gonna name every mob in minecraft a name of the moans crew and hunt for Easter eggs!Mojang, not moans lol

No kidding! Z***a's owner is a greedy b*******d. I quit playing "normal" FV years ago when I discovered bots--had to use a bot to keep from getting carpal tunnel, or I couldn't play at all. Z***a's idiocy finally got to be more than I could handle (more new FV cash items each week than I could keep track of), and I finally gave up about a year and a half ago.
I do miss all of the cute graphics. I used to collect trees, horses, and fountains. And the pig and sheep breeding was one of my favorite parts. Did you ever get to do any of that, especially the color-changers? That's what these new rainbow sheep in MC remind me of.
I wonder if they dug through the game's code to find this or actually tried it in-game.. hmm
I was actually looking for some other code (NBT tags to update this article). I randomly noticed "jeb_" in a file with sheep code. I saw that it was checking for the sheep's name, and figured the rendering code was to make the sheep have special colors or something.
I tried it in-game, and I wasn't far from the mark.

Now i know what to do with my nametags

When you name anything "Grumm"—or "Dinnerbone"—it will flip upside down. http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Easter_eggs#Upside-down_mobs
