I say yes, I believe that there should be multiplayer server spotlights the one thing I would stay somewhat away from is not only doing the large servers that seemingly everyone knows about but the smaller ones and ones that run actual mods and not plugins doing a spotlight on a great smaller server can really help it grow and reach its full potentional that it may never reach because no one knows of it and it isn't always the easiest to find a good server to play on that runs mods even if it runs one of the common ftb packs or tekkit packs.
I can understand that. Question though: what qualifies as advertising, in this respect? Would my coverage of maps, mods, videos, and texture packs not also count as "advertising", since I am showing off their work, with the hope that others will enjoy it?
I suppose that's a fair question. However, I think there is a critical difference. With a mod, a map, or the like, you're showing off someone's creative work. With a server, it's not really the same thing. A server is just a group of people. A community, certainly, but it isn't a creation in itself. If it were a feature of something impressive on a server, that would be different. That's not showcasing the server itself, though. Which, I suppose is what I'm getting at. No server, in itself, isn't any more impressive than any other, and any creation on a server should be able to stand on its own merits. Showcasing the server itself is sort of like admiring an artist's studio, rather than what they've painted.
I can't see the poll, but I vote no for the same reasons already outlined by BlueSteelAU and acollins41198. I especially agree that the servers that require payment for membership, levels, etc. should NOT be spotlighted.

Where did the poll go? I vote yes, I think that would be a great idea. Bring some attention to the servers that have a nice community and a great theme, but just need some more players.
Could we have a bit more info on the selection process of these servers? I know many people have been on about this, and it might clear up some confusion. Namely,
- Do bigger servers have a better chance? Smaller servers?
- As far as small servers go, what are your terms for "unique"?
- Would you take in submissions for servers, or search them out yourself?
Server size is a factor mostly because of the volume of people I'm writing for. Keep in mind, there are tons of people who read these articles, and a smaller server will absolutely buckle under the weight of newcomers if it isn't suitably prepared. That's not even counting the rather large number of trolls/griefers who absolutely will take advantage of something they are envious of. However, that doesn't mean medium or smaller servers are excluded, since size isn't necessarily an indication of how good a server is. It might be a potentially large server with a small population, that just needs a jump-start.
Regarding submissions: I will consider them, but that isn't usually how I pick servers. Understandably, anyone on their own server will feel it to be remarkable, and that's not a bad thing. There are other factors in considering which servers I drop by, but making a bullet-point list of those factors would just make people start "farming" for server coverage. I don't think that's helpful for anyone.

I think your comparison would be more like me spotlighting the box the server runs on, but I see your point. I don't see a server as just "multiplayer Minecraft"; any server that draws a large, passionate community is a work of art. "Large" is relative, of course, but I figure any community that is that passionate about their server must see something good in it, and I start poking around to see what that good is!
This is my concern as well, as with everything that Curse introduces.
Everything we introduce is an advertising feature? Hm...interesting.
Sometimes, I think it's easy for people to assume that Curse is some big, faceless group of old white guys in suits, sitting around grumbling about the good old days, when video games had two colors and 8 pixels, caring for nothing more than how we can inconvenience people the most. I don't think a lot of people realize most of us are in our 20s and 30s, and every one of us is a hardcore gamer. In general, anything we introduce is something we hope will be a useful addition to the gaming community, in some form or other.
I'd again like to point out we (I in particular) are not unreachable, and feedback IS appreciated. It's the only way we know if we're doing something people find useful or not, after all!

Mine was more of a poorly placed stab at the fact that you guys place ads in the free version of your desktop app (I am strongly opposed to the concept of ads in apps, especially ones on the desktop). I'm very bitter on the subject and I'll admit it's colored my opinion of your entire company.
I'm all for this idea as long as there doesn't end up being a feature where only certain server suggestions become part of Curse Premium and the like. I would like free and Premium people to get the same exact suggestions is what I'm trying to say.

I see what you're saying, yes!
Honestly, I rarely write anything on the front page for a limited/privileged few, because I don't think that's right. Everyone enjoys Minecraft, and everyone deserves to enjoy it the same way, as far as community content and news are concerned.

Well, I'm on board then and look forward to seeing what servers you feature. Thanks for bearing with my snippish atttitude.
I've actually been looking myself, so if this pans out I might finally find one.
I'll say yes-ish? The thing is that I want "community creations" to be focused on the creation itself, not a server, otherwise it would only feel like an extra advertisement for the server. Sure, servers can be added to the community creations, aslong as there is a creation on the server that needs abit of attention, with this I'm meaning that the post should be focused more about the creation itself rather than the server becasue I mean afterall, isent it the creation we'd wanted to know about?
About the only request I'd make is to not feature Whitelist servers. I don't have anything against them, but it's pretty useless to advertise a server that nobody actually gets to play.
Besides, the good ones will run their own youtube channels if they really want people to see what they're doing.
Also, if you DO choose to spotlight a server, it might not be a bad idea to check with the server owner first. I could see a server really getting hammered hard with people trying to log in all of a sudden when it got featured....
Hello,
thanks for your poll.
Sorry for not reading all posts here.
I think this:
1) As Skelator424 said, if you put servers into spotlights, you will bring MANY players to those servers. So,
===> make sure the server admins are fine with that. Too much activity on a random server = server crash. Plus, some servers may prefer not being put in spotlights.
2) most servers are "the same" about their rules, honestly. What truely changes on most servers is just the buildings.
===> servers that deserve a spotlight more than others, in my opinion, are servers with very different rules, uncommon, unique rules. Those are often rare, and with few players, so point "1)" still strongly applies.
I think this would be a great idea, as a lot of small servers are over-shadowed by the larger servers. As long as the server owner gets asked if he/she would want the server to be reviewed, being some servers prefer to have smaller community servers.
that my opinion, thanks -Gwain

Tentative "sure" from me.

Curse PremiumAlso I don't mind if you have advertising features for servers, just make note that it is a paid listing.
Advertised servers are often the most unique anyway as they have money to spend on coding.

Retired StaffThere have never been - and there will never be - paid server listings. I listed my reasons for that a few posts back.
