And this surprises you guys why?
I actually understand Bethesda Softworks point. It is all about peoples concept of association. When i think about either the words Elder or scrolls, I know im talking about morrowind. Bethesda Softworks doesn't want neither of those words to be associated with nothing else but their games, and thats understandable. And they are allowed to do this, because they own the image that comes with the word Scrolls or elder, they have copyrighted those words in the game community.
And i have seen much worse, in Australia, the chocolate company Cadbury now owns a certain shade of purple, the same shade of purple on each of their chocolate packets, and they can sue if anyone uses that same shade of purple in ANYTHING that they sell.
Nowadays people copyright words, colours, objects and images.
It's the world of business people, Gaming is a business, so no dev is protected from **** like this.
So of course Bethesda Softworks is gonna be pissed when someone used their word.
I understand Bethesda softworks point of view because i myself am a business man, but i dont think they needed a 15 page cease and desist. They could have just nicely contacted Mojang, and told them that they shouldn't use the word Scrolls.
And who cares if they have to change the name, the single word "Scrolls" sounds a bit bland.
My inner Minecraft player though want's to tell Bethesda Softworks to stfu and let me play Scrolls.
Okay they are saying that customers could get "Scrolls" mixed up with "Elder Scrolls"... I'm sorry but if you know what you're looking for or even the slightest idea and you pop up something from Mojang and its not say.. Oblivion... you're going to go oh right, that's not it.
Now another very good point as to why they need to drop this. Never have I typed in The Elder Scrolls, Elder Scrolls or Scrolls looking for any of their games. As I'm sure most of you have done if you needed info on it you type in "Morrowind" .. "Oblivion" .. and in the future or if you want information now "Skyrim"
Yes "The Elder Scrolls" are put into the names of these games but the importance of that title as diminished over the years due in part to the way Bethesda is marketing their games.
I think Notch should hold his ground, they are going to try to bully him into changing it and if not its off to court. You have every right to use Scrolls for a game name, Bethesda is just trying to be pricks about it and if they had any clue as to their customers and what they search for they'd know that this is retarded, blown out of proportion and no one now even associates Elder Scrolls with their new titles.
Bethesda come on I like your games but seriously its a word technically you don't own the word so technically there allowed to use it, and seriously its not as bad as having the words "Elder Scrolls VI" in the name is it.
I could understand if the game was called " Elder Scrolls", however its just called scrolls just because a Big Company's game has certain words in it doesn't give them the right to sue everyone the wants to use it. And worse why haven't we heard of another case of this occurring? Why are they going after an indie company like mojang? And why can't they just grow a pair and not act like the pussys over at google that run youtube, that's a whole nother topic let's not go into that one shall we.
So I had some respect for Bethesda Softworks now there's none.
But BGS still is number ONE hurry up w/ Skyrim already WOOT!
the wrod scroll is not there word they did not create it so they can not sue for somthing they didnt create now if they created the word then it would be possible for the chance to sue mojang for using it in a project but they didnt so they need to stop trying to get mouny for mojang useing scroll
Well it all comes down to virtual market space. They want to have only their games pop up if you type in Elder or Scrolls I'm sure. But guess what, you don't own the dictionary. I just typed in the word Scrolls into google. FIRST RESULT: Scrolls by Mojang. <--- And that right there is why they are pissed, I'd be willing to bet money on it.
Now if you type in Elder into google FIRST RESULT: The Elder Scrolls official website
type in Elder Scrolls into google FIRST RESULT: The Elder Scrolls official website
Its all because "Scrolls" has knocked them out of the top google search results.
Ezcept that Bethesda pays these idiots salaries, so they're ultimately responsible. Heres hoping they have enough sense to call off their dogs and issue an apology before this turns into a huge PR disaster.
Agreed. Minecraft has HUGE exposure as an amazing up and coming title. It's all over the gaming world. Bethesda is more than likely to look like a bully for doing this, especially considering they're suing Mojang for the right to trademark a word. This whole thing is silly.
In my opinion, major video game review sites and shows should publish this story. Once Bethesda starts getting negative exposure a mere three months before their next huge title releases on gaming sites that get massive traffic, they'll definitely pull back and rethink their decision to do this.
In short, this has the potential to damage Skyrim sales if the company is labeled negatively by the gaming community as a whole.
Well, you dont have to be a jerk about it, I was jokeing, but you wanna go that way, then fne! I agree with the last reply you have gotten, Bethesda DOES pay these lawyers, so technically, bethesda is completely responsible, until the team fires the lawyer I scoff at the company! also, I am aeithiest, your god cannot save you now! One more thing, I deem you a transvestite hooker with 1 arm and leg and sit on the street corner with a sign that reads," F*CK ME IM AN A**HOLE!". also I deem you stupid aswell!
I just think that's absolutely stupid. It's like if someone was sued for a game called "The Magic Link" or something by the creators of Zelda for using "Link".
This whole Bethesda is not Bethesda is ********, even if the creators and architects of the game are not the ones suing it is the parent company or their representatives (the lawyers. In every corporation there are a lot of innocent nice people but that doesn't change the fact that the legal entity that they work for is doing shitty things. Unfortunately the only way companies learn is by refusing to buy their products, if it hurts the "cool people" at Bethesda too bad.

Why??! Why my piggy?! I loved-ed you, piggy! I loved-ed you!
Well, here's the thing. There is a MASSIVE difference between things like George Lucas trademarking the word "droid" and Bethesda Softworks trying to say they have a trademark to the word "scrolls." "Droid" was not a dictionary word, although it is the derivative of one; "scrolls" is. It's like saying that Whiffle Ball, Inc. trademarked the color yellow and could sue a company that sells lemonade for the color of their drink "infringing on their color trademark."
Is it just me, or does the term "there are more lawyers than cockroaches" spring to anyone's mind?

Curse PremiumThis is why I love Mojang, that's not their mind-set.
Is it just me, or does the term "there are more lawyers than cockroaches" spring to anyone's mind?
