Uh.. it's a word... A word that is of course in the dictionary, which I remind thee, is the treasure of words. Anyone can use any of them, even if a game or not. Also, Mojang is an indie company unlike the makers of Elder Scrolls, there will be absolutely no confusion between the two games.
For ****'s sake, Bethesda! The working title is very rarely the final name! The Nintendo Wii's working title/codename was the "Revolution", but it didn't keep that name at launch! Really, there's probably tons of books, games, and other hoopla with the word "Scrolls" in the title - why aren't you filing complaints there?! Why not sue someone who makes something called "Scrolls of the Elders"?! You don't own the word! Get off your high horse and drop the damn charges. Otherwise, you've lost the money of myself, and every other dedicated gamer who likes both Minecraft and The Elder Scrolls. By the way, players NEVER call The Elder Scrolls just "scrolls". They call the series "TES" or "The Elder Scrolls", and the individual games by acronym (such as TES:O or TES: Oblivion) or just the last part of the title. (Oblivion, Morrowind, Skyrim, ect).
While I'm not pleased about this (potential) suit, and I do think it's a bit silly, it seems like a lot of folks are just skimming a few key words here and moving on. A few points to recognize, on the remote chance anyone's interested in reading comments besides their own -
#1: Bethesda is not claiming to have a copyright on the word "Scrolls". Read the actual concern/complaint again. Nobody in this case is claiming a copyright over ANY individual word in and of itself. The concern is that the -title- of a -computer game- ("Scrolls") is, in their lawyer's/lawers' opinion(s) (see below), worryingly similar to the -title- of another -computer game- which they already had a copyright on the -title- of. If this were a book, no action would have been taken. If the word "Scrolls" were being used in the game, no action would have been taken. This is an issue of the title of one product being very similar to the title of another product of the exact same type, and nothing else. A bit unreasonable? Yes, perhaps.
#2: "Bethesda", in fact, isn't doing anything. Their legal department, and/or an individual or group within it, is doing this. Game companies are not single, cohesive, monolithic entities. Things happen in one part of a large company that other parts have no idea of. While there's obviously intercommunication, it is unfair to say "Bethesda does this" or "Bethesda thinks that" unless it really is something coming from the head of the company or the company as a whole. You can only say, in this case, "Bethesda has a lawyer that says this."
#3: It's a C&D letter. A lawsuit is being threatened, but these things often progress to negotiations that end in a compromise, or just settle down if the C&D is followed. Nobody is necessarily even going to be sued.
"Let me put it this way all of you Minecraft fanboys..
Bethesda is and always will be better at making games in there genre than Mojang is at making games in there genre."
Really? You joined The MINECRAFT FORUMS, to rant about how bad Minecraft is? Do you even have a life? Do you really think your not a troll? And Two, Minecraft made it's genre. Lastly, This is a **** move no matter what.
they might as well sue minecraft for having minecon in vegas because (pretend some retarded bethesda CEO is saying this): ITS TOO MUCH LIEK N3W VEGAS DERP

..I probably made no sense.. But.. Yeah..
Hey, Bethesda! Jump into this Creeper Pit!
Warcraft -> Minecraft
Elder Scrolls -> Scrolls
And seriously how unprofesional is notch? Going on twitter and posting all of this like a child? Wow. Leave gaming to the big dogs mojang."
He called it minecraft because you MINE stuff and you CRAFT stuff. The similarities are coincidental. Dumbass.
I say to my friend, "I just went to an antique store and bought some scrolls."
Will I get sued for saying "scrolls"?
As long as the games, items, etc are COMPLETELY different then they are being ridiculous.
Not trying to say they're the same thing, I've never played or even knew their games before so I'm just asking.
I think Bethesda were a bit rash. It's still a development codename title with no ETA.

Thank you.
Come on Bethesda? How stupid do you think we are?
If I says Scrolls in one of my games, I get sued.

But seriously, Bethesda is going to come out of this with nothing but bad PR, all thanks to their legal department.
