Isn't OpenGL 2.1 over seven years old? Doesn't exactly require an uber graphics card to cover that.
Saw this and had to look it up. OpenGL 2.1 "Release Date: July 2, 2006" People should start doing some homework and getting new updated videos cards. These can be very cheep. Check not only Amazon. New egg / ebay and if you really want to go cheep check your local flea markets / discount computer stores and yard sales. I have seen decent computers with cards that support 2.1 or higher at yard sales as cheep as $5 - $15
I have a 2011 computer with a card with OpenGL 1.4.
So damn you.-
The hardware isn't EVERYTHING. If your card came with or currently uses OpenGL 1.4, that doesn't mean it won't support higher.
The graphics card I got a few years ago, an OEM GTS 450 ($200 at best buy, probably way cheaper now), said on the box it had OpenGL 4.0 support. I was using v304 of nVidia's driver, and it was using OpenGL 4.2. I decided to upgrade my graphics driver today to v319 and now it uses OpenGL 4.3. On wikipedia it says that my card has support for OpenGL 4.4 (the newest version), I just need the driver that enables it.
Have you tried using more updated, or even different drivers? I'm also using Ubuntu, and was using v304 with 13w38a and had no issues at all, not even with the main menu. But I have a dedicated graphics card and am using proprietary drivers as well, soooo.....
....and yet another reason you should get a desktop instead of a laptop.
Also, as for why I was using v304 of the graphics driver is because when I installed it, v319 was labelled "experimental". I looked at it in August, and this was no longer the case. Now they added overscan compensation back into the settings. I don't get why they even ever had to remove it, I had to get a new TV just so I could use the newer drivers comfortably (because my old HDTV had a funky native resolution, despite supporting 1080p.).

Weeeeelp, I'm stuck on a crappy laptop until I have enough money to upgrade to a decent computer. Looks like I will be stuck playing Terraria seeing as I can't play Minecraft anymore.
I would upgrade my GPU too, unfortunately, laptops can't be upgaded.

Hey at least the new Terraria update is coming out soon c: B
But the new update is pretty cool I guess. At least we're getting back to the weekly thing.

Naw man. For one, Dinnerbone has stated that this is an announcement for the distant future.
And when that happens, then what? Well, you can continue playing 1.6.2, or whatever the most stable version is the last thing you can play. This message is an early warning so people can prepare and upgrade if they can. We'll get more awesome new features, better performance and better graphics at the cost of lower-grade and old hardware not being supported. But honestly, those aren't the best or even comfortable choices for gaming.
If this were the older launchers where if this were happening then, you'd be screwed because you would need to get a questionable download of that version, or have prepared and backed one up, otherwise you wouldn't be able to play because you only could get the newest stable version.
With the new launcher that isn't an issue and you could hop onto just about any older version you want to! So, it seems they've actually started acting like the multi-million dollar company they are and are thinking ahead.

Yeah, I'm totally fine with this update. I don't play Minecraft much anymore because to laggy for me, when I get my new desktop I'll probably start playing again.
Agreed. This is a "feature" I will never ever use. Completely pointless and stupid.
These early shaders are more likely a proof of concept for expansion of their shader system. It'll probably be added to in the future with more targeted effects.
I have no idea why people assume these are just being added for no reason. As it stands, they're fairly neat as far as I'm concerned, and I like what direction it indicates Mojang moving in (finally).
Mind naming a few additions that wouldn't be "pointless and stupid"?
Jeb should buy me a new computer with a card slot compatible with modern video cards.
Wow, that entitlement. You paid for a certain version. Updates are bonus content, nothing more. Don't update if your computer can't run it.

I have a desktop.
I can't update my drivers, anyway, in Windows are only capable of OGL 1.5 and in Linux 2.0, but in Linux I can't get the snapshot to start.
If you would buy me a new computer, then that is fine, but I am seriously too poor to buy one...
I did not pay for a specific version of MC, I paid for the entire MC experience, thank you very much, in fact if I weren't poor, I would donate to the MC dev team to show them how epic there game is, but as I said, I'm short on money.

Part of enjoying the any PC game is buying a good PC. If I had a garbage PC and spent $60 Battlefield 4, and then it ran like trash, I wouldn't really be able to get mad at the $60 I spent. I would need to buy a PC that gave me the whole experience.
