Abandon Java? HAHHAHAHAHA good luck with that pipe dream. They've already sold 10 million copies and are swimming in money, why would they remake the game? You think they actually care about the lag we're getting? As long as they can make some small tweaks and make things barely tolerable that's what's going to continue to happen.
Oh, and they only wanted to hire Mr. Optifine on contract, they refused to hire him full time and he refused to give up his full-time job for contract work, so that's not happening.

It doesn't make sense that they would hire people from bukkit (when an API is a relatively trivial thing to add on, that could have easily been done in-house) but not the optifine guy (requires a far more advanced skillset, which mojang obviously lacks).
As for Java, I'm happy with it as we likely wouldn't have gotten bukkit and most of the plugins we love, without it. And most importantly, it means that it's not a Windows-only game. I'd pay double for something that runs on Linux. Mojang gave me that at half the price of your typical game, with the bonus of endless updates that continuously keep the game fresh. What they really need now, is multicore support.
The 1.5.1 update is, barring unforeseen circumstances, expected to go live tomorrow.

This was posted yesterday (19 March). Does this mean we should be looking for an update still today (20 March)? Or am I reading an edited post? Or did they miss calculate when the update is coming out?

I don't know where Sacheverell got this nugget of information (because he didn't link) but the only thing I could find is this blog post from Jens stating that it would be out on Thursday.
I'm going to go on the word of the guy working on the game, myself
W00T! Thank Jeb for the update! I actually have over 70-80 fps on my comp, and when Optifine fully updates, I'll have over 100+ FPS. 6GB of RAM, 2.78ghz processor, and a video card with 1GB of dedicated RAM. I am beast!

Funny you should say that - every time I've tried optifine on my laptop I consistantly get 30-40fps LESS in game, not more.
Mercifully I don't need the thing to play, as I can run the game at 70+ most of the time, but I haven't tried 1.5 yet so I hope this has not changed...
Especially since Jeb thought we were all complaining just to complain because HIS machine can run the latest update at 150 fps. :I
Yeugh.
Meanwhile i get 20 - 50 fps
The curious things is, when i switch to Beta 1.7 or older my fps suddently goes to 200 - 220

If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 99% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 1% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens.
The perfromance is improved a tiny bit(now get 15fps with an HD texture pack, 50 without with constant framerate drops) but still nowhere near the fps I got before 1.5.

You're computer is lower-end than mine in every way and you get more fps? Madness, I say!
