I like the idea of one village right at spawn. Villagers could help noobs with basics, give you your first dog, and you wouldn't have to build a starting house. then the rest of the world is yours for the taking.
Anyone notice there are 3 ruin blocks? Definitely not retextured cobble, I don't know how that idea came about. There is stone bricks, mossy stone bricks, and damaged stone bricks! For the zelda adventure map they can use the damaged bricks to show where to bomb Who knows though if any of this will stay the way they are, they are early shots.
bossbattlelogan,
Exactly, there is no reason to be upset by vanilla updates, unless they take out multiplayer or suddenly start disallowing mods. Vanilla is NOTCH and MOJANG's vision for minecraft, not everyone elses vision. That said, most of the things they add have been either thought of, suggested, or implemented as a mod already. So you can thank yourselves for the direction its going
Anything you don't like, you can mod out very easily, so there's no reason to freak.
Even better, they are working on making mods work better and giving out the source so that version changes will be less damaging to mods, so that will improve that situation a ton!
I'm speculating - just pure theory at this point - that when the map is generated it will also generate these new villages, which will be subsequently populated by NPC mobs, and not built by these mobs.
P.S. In the ruins picture, you can see regular stone in the same screenshot as the ruins. And it is highly unlikely that Notch changed the cobblestone texture between screenshots. That, with the fact there isn't a cracked cobblestone, mossy cobblestone, and regular cobblestone, so please don't let these "reskinned" rumors proliferate.
I like the ruins,I like the Mushrooms and I like the villages and that there might be other people,
although I like the idea of other people it would be good if there was an option of the villagers being:
people, pigmen, goblins or even for the villages to be abandoned (as others do not like that idea)
and if the mushrooms could be optional. The ruins look awesome and it would be good if the mossy,
crumbling and plain stonebrick are three different new blocks. The village houses are ugly and I hope
that notch and mojang fix that, It would also be good if the brown mushrooms were more than one layer
on the top.
I like the idea of fairy villages although that is probably just me I also think it would be good
if the villagers had kings, princesses ect but it would also be good if that could also be optional.
I will still enjoy playing Minecraft which ever way it goes :).
omg dude's right! there is TOTALLY a gate in those ruins! And NPC VILLAGES?!! I am SOOOOO geeked for this update... if it weren't for the possibility of even MORE awesome stuff, I'd urge them to finish it up and release it already XD
If you can fly into a rage with only two screenshots than you MIGHT just be taking things too seriously. Just saying.
I'm sure there are a few who are "flying into a rage" but I think that most of us are just expressing our valid concerns. I'll just have to trust Notch, I couldn't be more excited by the image of the ruins.
(I can't believe that anyone was upset over the weather either!)
1.) Once the server gets updated, will the NPC villages be in locations that have already been scouted/investigated/explored?
2.) What can the NPC's do? Will they attack you and/or mobs if a creeper decides to detonate nearby the village/village-people?
3.) Will ruins also be in locations that have been scouted/investigated/explored?
4.) Will there be a real "flying" setting added to the game, as there is a setting in the settings.properties file but you cannot actually fly without the use of mods/hacks. And if flying is added to 1.8, will there be any way to regulate the usage of flying (i.e. can't fly out of bounds, can't fly forever, etc.) And as my last question for flying, will the servers encounter more lag/issues when players fly?
So far these are the only points that I find interesting, I'll add more when I think of them.

Off to the right at the bottom in the fortress pic? Looks more like a vertical half block.

GENERATION 23: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation. Social experiment.
