for everyone trying this. You can't open the .jar. its not a launcher, its a file. You have to drag into you bin folder. run -> %appdata% -> .mincraft -> bin -> move and replace the download here. Once again its a file and needs all the other minecraft components with it to work.
See, I'd love to do that. I tried that, even. But they kept leading me to a stairwell, not a stronghold with a spawner and portal.
Dig under the spot that they lead you to.
It might be beneath that stairwell.

The Endermen stop pursuing me if I lure them over blocks I set on fire. They catch fire themselves and go back to wandering about. This in The End on creative mode. Is this new by any chance? Or possibly a glitch? Or am I waaaaay behind on this one...

You can always just save a copy of your current Minecraft JAR in the bin folder under an easy to remember name, and then switch between 1.9 pre4 and 1.8 whenever you want. Here, I'll go through it step-by-step:
Make a copy of, or just modify the name of the original minecraft.jar for 1.8 to anything else.
Download 1.9 pre4 and put it in the bin.
Leave the name as minecraft.jar.
When you want to use 1.8 for your project, give the 1.9 JAR a different name, and rename the 1.8 JAR to minecraft.jar.

Throw-able potions with gunpowder, pretty sweet! I imagine its a good way in SMP to heal/strengthen several friends or poison/weaken enemies.
