I think it was because it was boring and annoying to have to sit around in an otherwise useless realm waiting for plants to grow.
If there were Nether trees, ...
You do know that you can grow trees in the nether, tend a chicken farm in the nether, (and now that I think about it, cows can be moved through that portal now -- so all your animals can be grown/tended, even sheep if you have a grass block), so in theory you could do all your farming activity safe from either creepers or endermen messing you up.
Hmm... am I really saying that the nether is a safer farm than the surface of the overworld?
/em thinks back to all those creepers in my farm because of one misplaced torch, or that one stairwell ... or my partner's "moving the torches to make it look nicer" ... or his more recent "construction" ...
/em compares it to the ghasts that have attacked the nether base because of a silly game bug now fixed ...
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?
found a bug if u put any piston face up towards the sky with a redstone block on it , the piston will extend but will stay like that even after the circuit is off. tried doing block updates and nothing works.

I do know of that, and have actually made a fully functional base in the Nether. Sadly, you can't make a real village there (no sky, so no house is seen as "inside") but hey.
But that gives you the option, through a lot of work, to go in the Nether. What I want is a reason to go and stay in the first place. Like stuff that won't work in the overworld, and stuff from the overworld that won't work in the Nether. I wonder if making it so trees can't grow in the Nether, but there is some viable alternative, that the Nether wouldn't be a more fun place to explore.

This is an old bug showing itself in a new way. Hopefully now that it's even more obvious (and detrimental) it'll get fixed.
Too be honest, since they're going to be screwing with nether terrain gen, could they at least double the height and use the full 256 blocks available?

Of a long dead dream, little demon awake

The device will reawaken, hungry again.

Hey, you need the nether to grow wart for your potions... oh, no, you don't anymore. Hmm.
Ok, you need blaze rods, and those can only be obtained ... oh, right. Hmm.
Ahh! Ghast tears ... no, witches.
Yes! Magma Cream! ... or can you trade for that with a villager?

Actually, I don't know a way to get Blaze Rods except from the Nether, or perhaps very rarely if a blaze spawns near a portal.
AFAIK Magma Cream is the same way. I do know you can't trade for it, or at the very least I've never seen one in spite of seeing hundreds and hundreds of trades.
Yes, it's time for the first Snapshot of the year, 13w01a! What sort of awesome redstony goodness lies inside?
Redstones circuits are more consistent, and pistons should be more stable
Added the Redstone Comparator
Added the Daylight Sensor block
Added a Hopper block (still work in progress)
Places and takes out items in Hoppers, Chests, Furnaces, Chest Minecart, Dispencers, and Brewing Stands. Still W.I.P.
Added a Trapped Chest that activates redstone
Gives out a signal depending on the amount of players looking inside. 1 person = 1 signal, 2 people = 2, etc.
Crafted with a Chest and a Tripwire Hook.
Large Trapped Chests can be staggered with Large Chests to allow more compact storage.
Texture is slightly different than a normal chest.
Added Weighted Pressure Plates that detects item stacks
Added Block of Redstone (works as a pushable redstone torch)
Added a new Nether Quartz Ore to the Nether
Drops Nether Quartz
Added a Nether Brick (item) for crafting Nether Brick blocks
Obtained by smelting Netherrack
Crafting recipe is 2x2 Nether Bricks.
Inventory changes
Holding down the left and right mouse buttons and dragging when holding an item now splits the items across the boxes you dragged over. Left button splits them equally across the boxes and leaves the remainder in your hand. Right mouse button drops them one by one as you drag.
Double-clicking an item stacks as much of that item in your inventory as possible (up to a full stack) and picks it up without stacking any other loose stacks together.
Double-shift-clicking an item in a chest moves all of that item into your inventory neatly stacked into as few stacks as possible. The opposite is also true, moving all the items to the chest in as few stacks as possible.
Wow, and that's just one Snapshot! Are you ready to try this stuff out yourself? Let's get to the download links!
All the Snapshot details can be seen by clicking the picture above!

I thought you could get rods from witches? Wiki check ... no! The only nether item they drop is glowstone dust. Villagers ... No, eye of ender from a priest, but nothing else. Hmm, eyes of ender. So you can make an ender chest without having to go to the nether. But any brewing still requires nether trips for the materials.

Ever hear of hooking it up to a redstone torch?
