Now notice that sunlight is a light level of fifteen, and the sun isn't low enough to be a lower level of light.
Maybe it's because there are three extra, useless bits of redstone on the other side. Are they leeching the power from the full twelve the the sad, sad nine we have here? This could be interesting!
Notice how the end lamp is off after only about 10 blocks. This probably means that the detector only outputs a redstone strength equivalent to the amount of light.

I was thinking maybe they've changed how sunlight works, and with the sun that high in the sky maybe the light level is in fact 10. Nearer to noon it would be 15.
As I've said before, I'm not much on redstone beyond using it to blow up TNT or make a basic compass or clock. Redstone was always Sean's specialty no matter if it was making walls that open up where you enter into a big redstone city, or the old redstone "daylight detectors." As a casual redstone user, I like the fact that Mojang is making redstone more "user friendly". Now maybe I can make something useful, because it would be kinda nice to have automatic lights that could come on at night or other redstone things like that.
If this does get added make sure it affects anything touching it from the 5 sides that doesn't count the top ofcourse. Do not want to have to use redstone to connect everything all the time if direct contact works just as well. And that would make more things possible visually for this block.

Nope, funny thing is, they mentioned this new feature at Minecon. Redstone will be more analog like, depending on signal strength will depend on how far the signal travels.
Repeaters will have more of a play finally, instead of slapping a repeater every 15 blocks, sometimes you may have to put it 5 blocks from the source, othertimes 15.

No I know that, what we're taking about is that (we are assuming) the strength of the signal will be 1:1 comparable to the light level. If the light level is 15, the redstone signal will travel 15 blocks. If its 2, it will travel 2 blocks.
Therefore, in the picture in the first post, the light level is (or appears to be) 10. But whenever the sun is completely over the horizon it's always 15. So there are 2 options: Redstone signal is not 1:1 with light level, or the way the world is lit during daytime hours has changed.
Both are possible. The first seems weird and the second seems cool, so I'm leaning towards the cool one

I counted fifteen blocks of redstone, so even if this is true the lamp should still be powered.

I, too was thinking that making the sunlight level more gradual would be the only way for this to make sense. It just seemed a bit out of place in a redstone update, but there's always some random additions that make no sense, I suppose.
Seen as in the next update redstone devices output will have different outputs, I think this thing's reach will be the light level, eg if it's daytime (light level 15) this block will emit a redstone signal up to 15 blocks away; if it's night time (LL 4) this signal will only travel 4 blocks, and so on...
I wonder if it could work inversely; for example, having street lights turn on at night. That would be cool for villages and cities. I'm not a redstone person, but this upcoming update looks exciting.
Im 99% sure it will, I cant wait for street lights
I'm mildly disappointed in this, as it contradicts other redstone additions already tweeted about, would have much preferred something that "allowed" more redstone power to pass through based on the light over yet another "Generator" , don't we have enough of those, from torches to buttons, pressure-plates and switches?

i have an idea to use it:
R = Redstone T = Redstone torch E= Redstone light
L=Light Sensor B = block
L-R-B-T-R-R-R-E
now you have an automatic night opening light
or
maybe just an automatic closing piston door during the night 1 block away from your door for extra safety

Redstone isn't energy. It's... uh... redstone
But if you want infinite redstone signal, I have a better method: Place a redstone torch.
