Alright I finally figured out my problem. At first it was saving as a .zip whenever I tried to download it so instead when it pops up the window to where you want to save the file, change the file to all files and then name the file to Minecraft.jar and save it that way. It'll turn it to a .jar. Then I replaced that with my old .jar and now Minecraft works fine. Before when someone suggested to just copy all the contents of the .zip into the .jar it would just freeze on the downloading screen. Hope this helps someone.

I don't know what can be problem for your guys, but:
The reason its stuck on loading is because minecraft.jar is either missing or invalid/corrupted.
I use total commander and i rename my files, so basicly i have like 10 jar files - no mods, no mods but HD patch...etc - so i can hot swap them. I have my minecraft folder from quite a while now.
This is how i did it:
- backed up 1.7.3's jar file (renamed)
- downloaded minecraft.jar and put inside BIN
Also, for those whom it may concern: do NOT extract the jar file, simply copy it inside the bin directory.
Thats exactly, well, kinda what I did. I have the latest JAVA. I replaced the minecraft.jar file in the BIN folder with the new jar file, and I hit run via a shortcut on my desktop. What do you mean by starting the game with a batch file?
okays the 'update' screen with a green bar stoped at about 95% is a zip extension on the minecraft.jar...
ive tested that with several different minecraft.jar files it only stops when the zip extension is present.
install winzip and rename the zip to jar... oh and makesure you tell winzip to handle jar files.
My file is already a jar file. thats whats messing with me. could it be named a jar file, yet still be a zip file? so confusing.
Okay, at this point, with multiple "pre=release" updates AND the option to decline updates, why didn't they just release 1.8 officially and add this as 1.8.1 and the next and/or final as 1.8.2, and etc, as they work out the bugs just like they have always done?

Thank YOU THANK YOU!!!!
Finally i got what someone was saying and it worked!!! THANKS!!!
95% like normal, but im downloading inzip to try to rename it as you said. Ill test that and se what i get.
So I downloaded the winzip program and it only had options to zip the file, which i did, then i unzipped it and it went right back to a jar file, so its not a zip file, im sure of it. let me try once more.
@Rin310 Once you transfer the new file over why on earth would you take minecraft.jar back out? Unless you didn't bother to tell it to overwrite the old version there's only one minecraft.jar file in that folder, and it's the update you just installed, so you're only taking the update back out and leaving the game with no .jar file to work from. If you're telling it to leave the old one then maybe it trying to add numbers to the file is what's causing your problem, because it CAN'T have two of the exact same file in the folder, so one would have a number tacked on to it. Instead of taking crap out of the folder, just download the update, transfer it to the folder, and tell it to overwrite any pre-existing minecraft.jar file. It will replace the old with the new and you can play. If that still doesn't work then I don't know what to tell you, because there's no reason it shouldn't be working.
Ok, so I got it to work. I dont know exactly how, but I did as one person said before. When I got asked to save the file, I clicked save as type "all files" then changed the name to minecraft.jar which saved it as a jar file, replaced my old jar file, and viola, it worked... so idk. thanks for everyone's help

Mewmew, I dont overwrite old files, i remove the old ones and store them as backups.

Thats a really idiotic idea. Half these people can't even get the game started. If they released this as the actual version minecraft itself would be barely playable. Be patient and wait til everything is fixed, we all want to play it. Give Jeb a chance to work on this so it works properly.
