I believe that it is a currency/barter thing. As in, rubies are not the official currency, but are a widely accepted trading good. Also, I think he got the redstone be trading with the villagers, as well as the swords. They are all undamaged and perfect stacks. I therefore assume that he was trading for them.
[Edit] Also, you will not have to go searching for Rubies, as you can trade the villagers for them.
Currency and trading = great!
Especially if the trading is for all resources and not just some select ones.
Rubies as currency = OK.
Frankly, gold would make a better currency. It is more commonly associated with money in the real world, plus (except for powered rails) it pretty much has no other uses in minecraft.
Also, great ideas... so long as they don't delay or cripple the Mod API release.
i think that you can collect the ore and smelt it to get the rubies like gold and iron i don't think it has anything to do with redstone and i hope not

I think 1.3 is comin out friday. The "rubies" are coins. You get them by trading stuff with the villagers, then you can spend them and buy more stuff! This will make my zombie apocolspse series better.
I don't think that is rubies guys if you notice in his inventory there is a Brewing Stand among Coal and Redstone with other random blocks maybe you make the coins hmhm
I highly doubt the currency is redstone based, if that was the case, it could be mass manufactured, and made worthless. It would basically be the same as printing money, it would only give rise to inflation.
this trading thing looks EPIC, i think it will put a twist to the old minecraftian ways, a good twist not a bad one and it will make things a whole lot different
jeb if you are reading this please tell all of mojangs fans what thas strange jem is
The trading will only be senseful, if the prices aren't too huge or too small. The really have to find a medium way, or the whole trading in MC will go down the toilet and make the whole game very unpleasant
i think you are right if if you can get 20 of those jems for 20 chicken meat and you can bye a diamond chest plate for 20 of those jems it would make the game TOO easey
I spy, with my little eye, a village in a jungle biome. In the first screenshot. I hope they release this as 1.3 at least, I want bukkit to be updated.
what? its in a desert biome... Xd

Telling from the redstone,
I'm guessing it's a redstone gem (?)
omg same here! had the same idea lol.
In the backround you can see a villager house in a jungle.
lol, you dont want them to look ugly... so you want them to be pigmen... makes sense
i dunno... but the sprite does look sort of like the gem sprite in jetpack joyride
lol whenever i spawn a world, its always epic overhange and floating islands even in 1.2.5
Especially if the trading is for all resources and not just some select ones.
