I find two things interesting about this. Not the fact that you can clone enchants to another tool. But one, that you can ACTUALLY repair an enchanted item and not lose the enchantment. And second the "Name" part, which is way more interesting to be honest.
Adventure map makers will actually be able to give players tools and weapons with unique names, if they make them, and then deposit them in the map for the player to find. This will add much more depth to adventure maps.
Now all we need is for the control block to be able to check for /itemcheck 'name' or something and then if true do something like activate redstone.
In fact, that makes me wish for a "Conditional" block. Much like the control block but would activate a red-stone signal IF the entered question returns true when the block is activated.
Then we could technically make a sword Named KEY, and have it actually open a door or something.
But yes. I find updates that add the ability to be more creative in map making more interesting, since a third of people play minecraft for the adventure maps.
Guys if you combine a fortune pick and silk touch tool then you only get the benefit of silk touch. If you get something like single player commands and use /enchant on a pick for silk touch and fortune then try and mine blocks, thats what happens if you combine them in this. Also this is not overpowered because you still need tons of levels to enchant two of the tools you wanted and then tons of levels to combine them. No noobs are going to run around with super swords and kill everyone. If they are noobs then they can't get 2 diamond swords or enough levels to create a super sword. If someone has a super sword, then they have worked really hard for a really long time. They DESERVE it after that. They shouldn't put so much hard work into minecraft and just get crappy enchantments and no way of combining there silk touch pickaxe and efficiency pickaxe. Also if you have something like efficiency 4 and efficiency 4 you will not get something like efficiency 8. Only efficiency 5.They already have a cap on the enchantments. Thats why you can't get fire aspect 5 and you can get sharpness 5. Also the levels are much easier to get in 1.3 but this is because it was so hard to get experience before and it needed so much more experience to enchant. My last thing to say is this is completely optional. You don't have to use this. It will only help you to use it though. Just wait untill the snapshot comes out, then judge it.
hmmm so with sharp IV+ with sharp IV+ extra levels= with sharp V Is overpowered?
I was looking at the enchanting page on the minecraft wiki, at the notes section and it said no sword will be able to get sharp V except golden swords.

Thats only because golden swords have the highest enchantabililty which means that they can get better enchantments easier. The enchantment still exists for others, it just can't be enchanted on them with a enchantment table.

Actually, a higher enchantment level can be achieved with 3rd party software, I've seen Looting XX or so on admins' tools, so who knows if the cap will be removed for vanilla in this update to allow the making of even stronger tools.

Yes you can get higher enchantments but they are purely for the ability to say i have a looting 50 sword even though it does the same as looting 3 or anything. They do not effect the sword or pickaxe or whatever unless you have installed a mod to make them work.
I feel like that in order for us to repair an enchanted weapon, we must put exp levels into it. It's a completely fair tradeoff. Enchanting isn't exactly reliable, and obviously, you have an absolutely random chance of getting any enchantment. Clearly, the cost of repairing a pickaxe, with lets say Fortune III, Unbreaking III, and Efficiency II, is going to be much much less, then all of the levels you might spend in trying to get another pickaxe with those exact same enchantments. You might spend 120 levels of exp, in sets of 30 four times, in an attempt to get those exact enchantments.
Also on a side note, when are we getting more durable golden swords!? Let's face it, gold is super enchantable, and tools can get unbreaking, but it's pretty messed up when your sword can only be used 30 times before it breaks. Can't we give swords a minor (passive) durability boost when they get enchanted?

PvP is like sex. When both parties are willing, it can be a very enjoyable experience. However, when one party is not, it is bound to ruin someone's day.
Why is everyone looking at the repairs?! We get to name our tools! :D. I call her Vera. (Cookies to anyone who gets the reference.).Then there's also the problem of silk touch and fortune....

Time, Y U NO GO FASTER!? I want this snapshot out now, because I have a chest filled with seven near broken diamond pickaxes. I like to save them, just like I did with my first pickaxe (wooden).
All we need now is an "Uncrafting Table" that costs levels to remove materials from an item like in the Twilight Forest mod. Then many things become renewable because you can get some things renewable that have non-renewable components already. Need raw Diamonds to make a new Enchantment Table and Jukebox for a new base? Scavenge up some Emeralds, buy a Diamond Pickaxe from a Blacksmith Villager, then scavenge the Diamonds with an "Uncrafting Table." This would be particularly compatible with many mods that use otherwise non-renewable resources (especially Diamonds).

If regular is Vanilla then what flavor is your Minecraft?
Awesome idea. I wonder what happens if this update is in 1.4 and how it would be like on PVP servers, since maybe you'll be able to combine different enchants on a diamond sword. O.o <(Can possibly be OP?)
Combinable enchantments? Does this mean you could have Fortune and silk touch on the same pick?
Yes, Zephrith. That is a possibility, unless they change on how the repair system works. But, why would you want to combine them? Silk touch takes over the fortune enchant and only gives one block of (ex:diamond ore) not multiple individual diamonds or diamond ores.
I wonder if you like put in a shovel and a pick, if it will some out as a mix?
Hmm...Nice idea, but I bet they didn't implement that in this preview. Its only basically about the improved repair system, not about new tools or anything. Nice guess, though, as I might like them to implement something like this into the game.
So from what I am seeing, it looks as if we will have to take our tools to some form or repair station to get repaired, adds a little more challenge to keeping your tools repaired, we can combine enchantments now, so there is actually a reason to make these repairs, and it says repair and NAME tool...
so does this mean we will have the ability to name our tools as well? I could see custom maps/servers with "legendary" items, it would defiantly be cool.

Not unless they work at mojang. We don't know how it will be crafted.
Meh.
