Jens and Notch havejustannounced that the 1.8 pre-release .jar is available for public testing. It is important to remember that this is NOT The final release of 1.8, and is still extremely buggy. If you find any bugs, or need support, please join the #minecraft channel on irc.esper.net using your favorite IRC client!
NOTICE: This version will only work if you've paid for Minecraft, all the more reason to step up!
Oh and forgot to add, looking at Mojang's track record of caring about real, functional patches (1.7, 1.7.1, 1.7.2, 1.7.3, 1.6, 1.6.1 ...) a good guess would to be that 50%-80% of these bugs will remain.

Hi. I'm I modpack developer. I am the creator of several unreleased packs, most notably "Asthenos" and "Astro".
Hunger ran out, can't eat anything, even if health drops. Food doesn't work, period.
Bed placed at least 1 block away from any walls, and mobs guaranteed 100% to spawn within my house. (was hoping this would be fixed)
Natural caves/pits/etc.. cut into water bodies leaving non-flowing water "walls".
Love the size of biomes, and found an awesome deep ravine, with tons of cave systems all around, including a cave area that seems to have wooden pillar walkways (new dungeon?). Animals running when you attack, kind of a pain, yet more fun.
For those of you who don't know how to install it, first make sure you have downloaded the minecraft.jar file. Then click start and type %appdata% in the search bar, then click Roaming. There you should see a folder named .minecraft so open it then open bin, after that you should see minecraft.jar near the bottom, so then all you gotta do is replace that .jar file with the one you have downloaded from here. Have fun!
I did it, spawned in a swamp (Very epic to those who havn't seen one yet) Explored, started a base, at night I was running from a creeper and ran into enderman...omg it tp'd behind me when I hit it and SCARED ME TO DEATH (literally killed me)
