they are holding sand and well look that is a giant mushroom touching water if that sand was missing ealier then the mushroom could not grow thereful the stole the sand and are the NPC vilagers

Lol you can see bark on the lower blocks, notch must have added leaf half blocks. Unless he hasn't made the texture yet, its probably a tree.
