They are shades from the nether. They have the ability to travel freely between minecraftia and the nether because they are their own medium of unholy energy. They are notches plan for getting rid of player greifers because they themselves greif, noted by the sand and grass block being held. it forces greifers and players to work together to thwart the evils of shade greifing. well done notch!!
