There is no such thing as mobs reproducing in minecraft. They spawn in groups and then wander around. You will never see any mob in minecraft walk up to another one of it's kind, hump it, walk away, and come back days later to see it's baby.
What if he added child mobs to the towns (kinda makes sense), and these were boogeymen. o-o And they came into town, snatching kids, preventing towns from growing. So you can protect a town, thus letting more kids grow, letting the town grow. ;D
I will personally enslave these to do my mining and my creeper hunting.
They don't look directly hostile, as the screenshot taker is closer than 16 blocks and they are not taking pursuit. Maybe they're neutrals that you can maybe help and they will help you? But they don't look fit for the npc villages. I think notch said pigmen may be in the villages.
And as someone mentioned, the one in front is holding sand, and the one in back is holding dirt. Possible things they could be doing:
1. They could throw these blocks, and hurt you.
2. They could be building something.
3. They could just be strange little creatures that collect items blocks.
Also, notch is pretty close to them, and they are doing anything, or even looking at him. It's possible they have a smaller field of view then other mobs, or, they could be non-hostile like zombie pigmen, till you attack.
If they can remove blocks, I hope they can only interact with the natural blocks (ie dirt,sand and gravel) and not crafted/mined (ie cobble, wood planks, glass, obsidian). This would make dirt forts more dangerous and convince you to actually build your first cover out of something nice looking.
It will kill us all.The only thing we can do is hide and hope it wont give us sand!!!!!!

wory that it will move pieces of portals so people get stranded. so make them have
limits to what they can move.
