So lets recap the thread a bit (added new found info):
1) Its a giant mushroom, not a tree.
2) They are called "Enderman" as per Notch via Redit. The Wiki is using this name.
3) They are peaceful. Until you look at them.
4) They run toward you, if you look at them they stop and stare at you.

They seem to be based partly on Sleder man and Weeping Angels (Doctor Who).
This mob is now my favorite.
