And why does everyone seem to think these will be hostile? They might be peaceful nighttime-only villagers, trying to build shelter from the sunlight!

I always loved frightening creatures that turn out to be friendly...

I'm hoping that isn't the actual mob, Maybe if it has more texture and if I know what it does but anyway its nice to have a new creature to hunt!

Looks like some sort of Spirit or Mutant. They can proablally take certains NATURAL blocks. This is just my guess.
Does anyone notice the REALLY weird tree next to the picture?

I think its a destructor mob. It removes blocks of your house. And the mob can only remove 1 block and it will remain holding the block. Killing it might drop the block that it removed.

Probably different areas has different types

I can see these, I bet they can place and destroy blocks, and most likely get rid of blocks from houses/bases.
EVERYONE; Farm obsidian, We need to make obsidian houses, with iron doors.
And also, keep a sword/bow in your inventory. These thing will take over Minecraft.
