Same reason people place lights on the wall or ceiling in real life instead of holding them. Holding them takes up valuable arm space. Also, particular to Minecraft, it's not going to prevent a dark room from spawning skeletons to simply walk in with a torch from time to time. You'd still want to place them.
But I suspect that dynamic lighting like that -- that has to change every time the player moves -- might be very demanding on the game. And for a relative little gain. Unless it's not, 'cause I'm not really that computer-oriented. If it's not, sure. If it is, not worth it.

Make note: I generally avoid being insulting. If I sound insulting, I'm probably joking.
I'm still experiencing some lag spikes when walking around the world. And in some instances, when I right click once to place a block, it places two. That is another lag spike that I have experienced on this snapshot. This did not happen before Minecraft 1.0. I am playing on max FPS, fast graphics, and open advanced GL is on. And I should also point out that chickens look in the wrong direction when you lead them with wheat. And please, for the love of God... Undo the nerf on the smelting. PLEASE.
thanks for bringing that up. now everyone listen to me! nobody can help you with a bug if you simply say i found a bug! so as the above has asked. what does not work with slabs? do you perhaps mean that they place upside down?
I want to see this implemented: torches light an area when you have them in your hand.
EDIT: I also think there need to be more armor and weapon types. Like, more metals. I don't know, I just like upgrading and upgrading my materials and stuff in games, but then I hit the end in a few days and I make a face like this:
Torches lighting an area when held would cause way too much lag.

GENERATION 28: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation.
my computer that has never gone above 15 FPS jumped to 50FPS while looking up, 9-23 FPS looking forward, 4-12 FPS looking down... in the B version... can't wait to see what happens in the E version... going to test it now... cya all in a few
Love the rotatable logs, and they fixed my slabs on grass bug. Well, they fixed the reported bug, but the unreported one is still there. Oh well, I think I'll let it go.
Not sure if it is on purpose but in adventure mode (gamemode 2) your hunger drains at a alarming rate! About 1 to 1 1/2 hunger a minute! any one else have this? If i swich back to survival the drain rate goes back to normal
Has anyone else run into an issue with your own arrows not being free to pick up? Just installed the jar and loaded up a world, shot an arrow into wall (the sound amuses me) and went to pick it up. Imagine my surprise when it just stayed in the wall, like an annoying barnacle that refuses to scrapped off... or exploded, depending on what kind of barnacle your thinking of.

Anyone able to reproduce it?
did you shoot the bow in creative? In creative you can't pick up arrows I think. spawn a 64 stack of arrows a bow and go into survival and try again
this is a classic example of someone not knowing what they are talking about. they made it so things such as stone, wood, or anything else smelt-able have a reduced XP value where as ores and other valuables in the field have already been increased from their old levels. this means that people cannot just mine five tonnes of cobblestone and get 100 levels for it. this also means but does not necessarily state that the values of iron and gold have been lowered. however this has not been said and it is possible that both gold and iron hold their respective old XP smelting values.
anyways... now that i have gotten my ten cents out of the way... good work Mojang! keep it up!
Last time I checked, the XP from smelting iron ore was one XP per ingot, same as one XP per generic smelt. If that has changed, then good.
What I am saying is that right now, mob grinders give lots of XP to the point that people make them. And defend their "right" to do so. Generating multiple high-level enchants at the rate of about one per hour. And being upset that it's 4 "Efficiency 4" picks in a row.
Last time I checked, the XP from mining was tiny compared to the XP from combat, and XP from combat was dominated by grinders.
where as ores and other valuables in the field have already been increased from their old levels.
But two ores -- Iron and Gold -- are not mined in the field. A zero-XP block is mined. When you smelt it, you get XP.
While the other items have been raised, it's still around the level of "Combat dominates, mining is a bonus". I'm calling for "mining to dominate, combat is a bonus". This would force you to keep expanding, and fighting to control the new areas.
And if you keep "5 XP per mob, 10 per blaze" as the base, that means raising the XP per level.
All we were told so far is "Strongly decreased the amount of enchantment orbs you get from furnaces". That seems to include iron/gold.
===
So lets get 30e up and running, and see what ore smelting does.
1. 17 coal blocks mined = exactly 1 level (1 xp per block)
2. 17 coal blocks smelted = 2 green bars (almost nothing).
3. 17 iron smelts = 11.5 green bars (less than 1 XP per iron smelted).
4. 17 gold smelts = exactly 1 level.
Iron and gold have been reduced way too much.
Coal at 1 per block -- that's too little, compared to combat. Still seems to say that combat dominates XP over mining.

Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?
They need to add duel wielding. Two things in one hand like the picture of the adventure update, we all thought duel wield arrived but we were mistaken. Now or later would be a good time to add it.

yes, rotatable logs is great! You can make more art than you could before In-case some of you don't understand it, think of pistons. When you place it looking in a certain direstion, it is shown that way! But... what babout half-slabs? Couldn't they do the same? Then again, it'd be annoying having to look down to place them! Then again, you could do it to dispensers to make nice traps! And beds... wait... no...
