As an owner of a PPC mac that runs J5 and has, up until now, run Minecraft without much trouble, I am upset at the latest happening here.
The news article on minecraftforum.net is claiming that the separated server version must consume more resources and run slower, requiring better hardware. Maybe, maybe not. (With the server running as a separate thread in the same process, most of the forced IPC overhead is actually not there -- in particular, with no process change there is no TLB/cache flushing.)
The system requirements at minecraft.net have changed, and now specify java-6 as the minimum; those of us with J5 macs are now "cut". And, the question has to be: Why? (1)
I am not disputing that the current client/server architecture cannot keep up with slower machines.
This isn't new. I had raised these issues several versions ago. Raising the system requirements because your programs are <redacted> is not the answer. Changing the software to work better is.

(1): I am aware that both FML and forge require J6, currently. While all of forge may be "no alternative", RML (Risugami Modloader) works just fine with J5, and I'm sure that FML can be made to work in J5. Once you've got the ability to load mods, then you can play -- and yes, some mods will work, some won't -- that's exactly the situation we have now.
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?
I just downloaded this, and it looks great, except that many new items are coming out as pink boxes. The tripwire hook's hook part is just all pink, emerald block is all pink, and some other block that grows on the sides of jungle trees is also all pink. Please help!

You're using a texture pack. Either update it (if one is available), create images for the new items yourself (if you are so inclined) or go back to the default (which has the textures).
Added an "Open to LAN" menu in the in-game menu, which allows players to open their world to other players. In the menu, the player can choose to turn cheats on or off, and choose the game mode.
The multiplayer menu now scans for LAN servers (singleplayer worlds which are on the same LAN and have been published with the /publish command).
Villagers may remove a trade option after it has been used at least 3 times.
Added wooden stairs for the remaining three wood types (spruce, birch and jungle).
Redstone (including repeaters, torches, levers, and pressure plates), Torches and Rails can now be placed on top of upside down slabs and stairs.
Fixed a freeze bug when opening the texture pack folder from in-game
Fixed published games apparently staying open for visitors when the host leaves
Fixed Villagers not showing hearts around them when mating
Fixed respawning causing your skin is to be set to the default until you leave and come back
Fixed being unable to hear TNT from more than 16 blocks away
Notable Bugs
The three new types of Wooden Stairs cannot be crafted.
When creating a world, using punctuation (./:"*><?) will appear as _ unlike previous versions. (E.g. 1.3 will appear as 1_3) (?)
Impossible to rename a world
World Name is always replaced by the Folder Name after playing in the concerned world.
Single player freezes at moments, does not always play sounds, and is much laggier then before on some computers.
The three new stairs cannot be set on fire with flint and steel.
SWEET JESUS! Woohoo! I invested 300 dollars into my computer because of its lacking performance and when I went to play minecraft with the new snapshot, it would lag like hell at moments. I was freaking out thinking I just invested 300 dollars worth of **** into my computer. But I was wrong, thank God.

Fixed Thanks! Edited the original Terrain.png a while back and forgot about it. Just deleted that one and everything was good
I was building my house, and the floor was wood.
I have a loft, so I thought adding seats would be nice...
The floor is oak wood, so I tried using spruce wood planks to craft spruce wood stairs.
Of course, they aren't fully implemented. Of course.
You have to flopping use Creative.
My house is legit; I'm not gonna cheat...
i hate the lan i causes hecka lag i wish notch was back i hate Jeb. if this were notch he wouldn't have added all this crap im just saying keep things small
Actually, Notch's biggest regret with Minecraft was the fact that he didn't do the SSP SMP merge earlier. And I agree. He really should have done it in Alpha.
Hey! You! Yes, you! The critic, the one who is having problems, the one who just reported a bug! Please read this:
To the critic. A lot of you people are complaining that they are adding way to much stuff, that single player is crap and lags, the game has gotten to RPG etc. Well if you don't like the things that they are adding just ignore them, don't use them. Don't like the LAN servers? Well then don't use them. Think that the enderchests make the game to easy? Just to make/use them, no one is forcing you to use these features, they are just there for people who like them. If you think that single player is getting to laggy then you are very, very wrong. Single player runs fine for most people. True, there is slight sound lag but you have to remember, this is a snapshot, there are going to be bugs, the sound lag is included in the bugs. I run minecraft off of a laptop and it works fine so there must be something wrong with your computer.
To people who are having problems. If you say 'Help! minecraft crashes!' we have no idea what could be wrong with it and chances are that you made a simple mistake. Please, before you post on this thread look around the internet for something that might help you, review how to install the snapshot, THEN you can come to us, IF you have an error log. Also, if you don't know how to install these snapshots please look around the internet, there are millions of tutorials. If you can't find one just click on the link in my signature.
To people who reported a bug. Please read through the post before you report a bug, we are glad that you noticed are want to make us aware of it but please, it is VERY annoying when 50 people report the same bug, especially if it was included in the buglist on the original post.
Stop failing your wall of text. The Lag is fact. lol at telling someone who is testing the snapshot not to say anything about it in a thread for feedback.
Actually, I really like the new gravel pack. A lot nicer than the old one with grey and... pink?!?!
Also, I feel like instead of a trade being deleted and forcing the player to unlock it again through trades, make it so that once a trade is used 3 or more times, theres a cooldown. Like how animals have a cooldown before they can breed again, give villagers a trade cooldown.

I hope they fixed some of the lag issues in LAN in tomorrow's snapshot. I am not complaining, this is just out there for testing. We tested the snapshot on the sever I play on, and it was unplayable, the lag was down-right epic for all of us. This forum is out here for people to give their feedback. Jeb and the guys do an amazing job, Minecraft is the best game out there and Mojang is the most player friendly company I have ever encountered, but this issue needs fixing and I am going to say so, even as a favour to them.

That does not mean that it has to be that way.
