Minecraft's Singleplayer mode and Multiplayer mode are being merged, so that mods are compatible with both singleplayer and multiplayer, instead of just the normal singleplayer mode. I beleive this is preparation for the official Modding API that is possibly (Probobly not) coming out in 1.3, otherwise it will be for 1.4 or 1.5.
How to extend LAN mode into WAN Mode
As it stands /publish enables you to share a world locally, that is on your side of the router.
here's how to get that Worldwide....
1. do /publish and note the Number after the : this is your port number
2. set up port forwarding on your router, and note ITS IP address
EDIT: you'll want the IP address the internet sees not your local net, so if you have written down
192.XXX.XXX,1, you're doing it wrong.
3. share RouterIP:Port with your friends!
3a. Alternatively you can use one of the free dynamic dns services.
4. GameOn!
With news of the 1.3 patch, I've decided to stop playing until its release because I wanted to start a new map. But lately I feel that I cannot wait so i'm resorting to using this snapshot. Would the terrain generation of this snapshot be more or less be the same as the 1.3 patch?
Woo, I'm glad he changed the chests like that. This is basically a limited flavor of stuff like lockette now, and will be very nice in vanilla smp. As an added bonus, it adds a bit of challenge to pvp, as one player can never quite crush another - they'll always have their base resources.
Also of note, the longer 1.3 takes, the better. The ssp/smp merge is a HUUUUGE change, and if it's implemented wrong, fixing it would be slow and painful. I would be pleased as punch if 1.3 takes 2 or 3 months to be released, ensuring the all the changes are well prepared, server owners are set, and the bugs are all fixed.
i get an exception after issuing the stop command:

Minecraft Land Generator | Memory issues? Try this:java -Xincgc-Xmx1024M -Xms512M -jar Minecraft.jar "We must be that generation that stands athwart history yelling: 'Hey, jackass, get your government off my freedom!'" - Jason Mattera
The enderchests not dropping an enderchest when broken makes it balanced.
How? The ender eyes are already difficult to obtain, and you need at least 2 of them in order to make the chest useful. Now we lose the the eye all together when we break it. And not everyone has mob grinders.
Forcing players to use enchantments is NOT good gameplay.
Speaking of 'new' mobs, I've always thought that ocean mobs would be cool. Sharks, for instance, could spawn out at sea (at a predefined depth) and follow your boat. You'd just see the fins sticking up out of the water. Of course they'd try to eat you if you fell in. They wouldn't be able to swim too close to the shore because there would be a minimum depth they can go. Also, their teeth could be a crafting component for something.
Can anyone help me with this? I downloaded this week snapshot and when I start to play and pause and then go back to game the world stops creating chunks and all the mobs are frozen also when i break a block i don't get it,if anyone of you don't have this problem please tell me how to fix it or upload your minecraft.jar, thanks

Well, actually I haven't played it yet but I have seen a few youtube videos on it.
This may sound stupid but... How do you install it? I've checked in the zip file and no minecraft.jar is there. Help!
thanks to LucasAntunes998 for making this banner!
it may be displaying as simply 'minecraft' in your file list, but it is indeed a .jar.
I don't know why, but there actually isn't. Do you mind creating a download for the .jar file itself?

Rename the minecraft.zip file to minecraft.jar, back-up your old minecraft.jar and copy the new one there.
Ooooooooohhhhhhhh........ it works now

Cast aside your festive doylaks: dragon stuff is about to happen.
Multiplayer is lonely once you understand how it actually works.
Alpha 1.0.4
seems like the next few snapshots will be more polishing
can't wait for more content though
