hmm
thinking it over. IF the single player server is a stripped down to nil except for loading chunks, saving, and entity control, the mod/pluginapi and leaves the rendering and . this opens up proper dual core support. but i still think it will lag like hell (i refer you to my first comment on page 1). if an optifine for servers is made then i will support this idea. but... no pause seriously. that's the basic function of games except the jump button.
not related to the lan server.
will the modding api ave more than 1 items and terrain pngs.
if so... my argument is invalid bring on the update ill just reserve my worlds for 1.2.5 untill the mods are updated
my arguments are mainly for the people with low end pcs that can barely run the normal game and not my self
I'm conflicted on my feelings for this. On one hand, it's amazing. For someone like me who yearns to play multi with one or two friends, but none of us have the funds to rent a server or the hardware to run one, it'd be a godsend. I'm sure the pause function would come back into play at some point, and adding a 'private' session mode so you'd be in a purely SSP would help those people who just want a single player game.
How much lag this will cause is worrisome, though... Normal servers lag me a bit. Not terribly, but a little bit. I'll be grabbing the snap shot soon and trying it out with a friend or two to see how it handles. Interesting idea!
Lol, face palmed like 20 times reading this;
for starters only ten percent of people know what this smp-ssp merge is.
While majority of you think its going to be using the internet or is going to be a multiverse which is every greifer's dream its not.
for starter's the smp-ssp is allowing "YOU" to have the choice to invite friends to play in your world similar with most multiplayer games today use the feature of. Which if you still not satisfied with the feature and want it still be perma singleplayer, just take out ethernet cable or turn off your wifi and if that's still too hard go in offline mode. Which you can still and will do. the only difference will be you'll be in your default skin and you won't be able to play multiplayer. which means you can't invite anyone.
This future update will be increase the updating minecraft as they now only have to work on the one mode. anyway I didn't read any thing about this article commenting how much this snapshot will, destroy minecraft. but more of what bugs are there in this update.
True this comment has nothing to do with this article but notch if you can read this SHUT THIS ARTICLE OFF!!!!
Ok, this is just wrong. No one is going to update until there is one update that brings back singleplayer again. Nice going Mojang. This better not happen, or you actually might lose money.
How would they lose money? We already bought the game....
I am worried that Mojang continue to release half-baked snapshots like this one.
Mojang should grind snapshots up through an extensive internal testing team before they release them on the unsuspecting public testers and with the continued release of buggy snapshots I am not seeing this happen. I strongly dislike testing snapshots that have a slew of bugs for me to contend with.
There are some bugs in snapshots that I have tested previously that shouldn't even appear, these are the kinds of bugs I'm talking about. They should also make sure that snapshots containing new features actually work as the feature would suggest they should work. One such example is the 'cheats' being on by default in two different snapshots, and then only getting fixed after players pointed it out. Separating the client from the server is one thing, expecting people to point out bugs that should already have been taken out is another thing entirely.
If Mojang can't significantly improve the baking time of their snapshots, the cake is really going to lie!
I've heard of bad coding practices, and one of them is releasing bugs that should be spotted and fixed long before they get to the outside world. The first actual bug in a computer was actually that, an insect had crawled into the computer and wreaked havoc on certain circuits. The bugs Mojang release make it sound like they have a horde of bugs running around inside their computer systems!
I think Paril knows what he's talking about. I myself don't know much about how the game works, but what I've heard and what he's saying makes PERFECT sense. Mojang is not making SMP SSP and making SSP SMP. If they were, there wouldn't be any changes, right? Big-time servers are still going to be around, because the server owner's non-dedicated computer would probably explode if it had to deal with of all of the stuff going on in it along with the stress of handling about 50-60 people. Singleplayer is not necessarily Singleplayer anymore, because of the fact that people can join you in your world, but this is an EXTREMELY small server you have running in SSP. It's meant for about 1-5 people I'm assuming. It's not like anyone around the world would figure out how to get to your little world, and if so, whitelist yourself and nobody else (rhymes!). Sure, it is laggy, but if Mojang doesn't fix it, you'll probably learn to live with it, like how most of the 1.8 haters moved on.
I personally think this is a very cool update, but I could see why people could dislike it. But really, I think the pros outweigh the cons.
I really hope that the singleplayer/multiplayer merging doesn't get added. Sure you can not tell anyone about your world, but there are also hackers. I just think Mojang should make it easier to create a server. I think there should be "networks" like friend groups or something like that, and you can change which people can get on your world. Also, I just don't like how the "disconnect" and "logging in" are in singleplayer, I think only people joining should see that.
You seem to forget we live in the age of "**** your feedback, we already made up our minds." People will assume what is in the Snapshot is what is in the finished release because that is how every company (and government) behaves now.
The removal of Single Player is a catastrophic mistake that should be reversed immediately. I honestly doublt more than 25% of players AT MOST are willing to take a hit to gaming quality for the sake of being able to invite friends into their world.
You going to demand your money back in a grand spectacle of might? Your logic seems flawed somehow.
I think he means that less people will tell their friends to get Minecraft, or that more people will tell their friends not to get it. And, because of that, there would be less customers and, therefore, less money earned by Mojang.
I HATE THIS IDEA i mean this is the game i play when theres no internet and now ssp is going to smp which NEEDS INTERNET THIS SUCKS!!!
I've played SMP without access to my internet...
@Those othe whiners: Hey, are we forgetting that Pocket Edition does just this? Oh, and it also has the option of taking the world your in offline.
Now sit down and think. You aren't losing your control over your world.
They will MOST likely include a function that puts your SSP in a sort of 'offline mode'.
I've ALWAYS wanted this to happen. They aren't taking away singleplayer, they are giving yu the option to expand it.
I was also thinking about how they may/ may not add a Friend List to Minecraft. That could only let your 'friends' into your worlds if you had them running as servers at the moment. Has anyone ever felt a bit lonely when it's just you and the background music? I have.
It doesn't even work for me. I still cannot connect to servers, and now not even single player works. I get connection timed out: connect, which is a bit retarded considering I am playing on a server hosted by my computer. I have installed the server jar.
For those of you who are raging, here's a list of what you'll get with the new system: Easier SMP hosting -
This is just inherent in the new system. Note that you will still have to manually tell it to allow other players on, they can't just join your world arbitrarily without your consent. Easier mod writing-
As SSP and SMP are now functionally more or less the same as far as all the behind the scenes stuff goes, modders need only write one version of a mod to have it work on both SSP and SMP. My guess is this is the primary driving factor for the change, as they promised a Modding API in 1.3 and this change makes the API a lot easier to write (because they no longer have to concern themselves with separate versions). (Eventually) Fewer bugs-
As there's now only one codebase to debug, Mojang should be able to find and fix bugs a lot more easily. (Possible) Dual core support-
As the world and your game can be easily made into separate threads (if they haven't already - chances are they have), this opens up the possibility of having it run on multiple cores in the processor, meaning that it will run a lot faster. No Pause-
As of right now at least. This is one of the few valid complaints I've seen, and hopefully they'll fix it by 1.3.
That's pretty much it. Right now it's buggy because, well, it's a snapshot, but they released the snapshot because they are counting on the community to spot bugs.

Well, it dosen't really. you have to accept the other people's invites it's not going to be like Notch has joined the game.

Besides, did you notice all the bugs?
This is straight from the MCWiki:
- Wolves cannot be tamed
- Enchanting does not work. (Both SP/MP)
- Repairing tools does not work.
- Fully charged bows don't produce any particles.
- Sounds occasionally do not play, or have a long delay when playing.
- Many sounds that do not work include: Doors, Fence Gates, Zombies knocking down doors, Dispensers, Fire, Nether Portal, Lava and extinguishing Fire.
- Minecraft doesn't shut down local servers if the server or client encounter a bug.
- The End and The Nether are empty when entering.
- Tools enchanted in previous versions lose their enchantment-glow and description, the enchantments still work.
- When creating a new creative world, the player is spawned in survival mode (and has to type /gamemode 1 to be in creative).
- If you select an old creative world, you will be put back into survival mode.
- Arrows appear to be dropping in front of the player until they hit something.
- Bonus chests do not work.
- Weather fade transition effect is missing.
