Hm, I do like the idea of having the ability to invite players to your singleplayer world, which means I could have a proper hunger games match with friends, but maybe add the ability to make a singleplayer world private.
You seem to forget we live in the age of "**** your feedback, we already made up our minds." People will assume what is in the Snapshot is what is in the finished release because that is how every company (and government) behaves now.
The removal of Single Player is a catastrophic mistake that should be reversed immediately. I honestly doublt more than 25% of players AT MOST are willing to take a hit to gaming quality for the sake of being able to invite friends into their world.
Dude, Mojang =/= Activision. They will fix these problems. Remember how ladders worked in 1.1? People complained and complained, so Mojang fixed this in a later snapshot.

Ladders in 1.1 were a test to see how well vines would work.
Mojang had no intent to keep ladders like that, just like now. I assume Mojang has no intent to "destroy Minecraft as we know it".
Wait, this is confusing me. WHAT part of this game is being run on my computer and what part is being run somewhere else? If you are saying that my game is being improved by taking it off my computer to be run, how is it that it runs when my computer is off the net?
Paril and EyeOfTheDaev have it pretty spot-on. In 1.2.5, SSP is just a "fake server" that "runs inside your Minecraft client". Unfortunately, this has to run in SMP for Minecraft to work properly as well. In 1.3, this "fake server" was removed and was moved to a separate entity on your computer. It CAN function as a true multiplayer server, but you can tell it not to as well, leaving it to work as a SMP server that only *you* access.
You make Singleplayer more like Multiplayer then turn around and make Multiplayer more like Singleplayer.
No, just no. This is a terrible way to allow players the ability to invite people to their singleplayer worlds.
... lolno. How the hell can you "make single player more like multiplayer"? It's the same game -- Minecraft. This change isn't to invite people to your server -- It's a side effect of properly developing a game.
Why would Mojang make it so Singleplayer is run by a local server?
I definitely understand where they are going with this. It would be awesome to have friends just join in like in pocket edition, but I think they are doing it wrong for pc.
It would be better if instead of having singleplayer automatically be run as a server, have a button in the escape menu that says "host world".
That would probably be the best option unless they overhaul the server to run ALOT smoother like singleplayer as of now and prevent determined hackers to just join in and wreck your world (it could be possible)
But then again how would we connect to our friends world? Hamachi? A new Mojang Network?
But how would we control the players that can join in out worlds?
Would there be friends lists? (I think I remember dinnerbone or someone of the bukkit team hinting this.)
This raises a lot of questions, but I would like to see how Mojang pulls this one off.
Someone hinted at friends list -- I thought it was Jeb, but I'm not sure. Regardless, the biggest issue here is that Minecrafters don't seem to understand the word "server". It does not mean "a place where everyone can connect to" -- It's simply a program that runs the core of a program. A piece of software can even be called a server and not even be programmed to connect to the Internet.
They're not giving us the option to use the old ssp option!
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!
... That's because your old "SSP option" is removed. SSP is one set of code, SMP is another. Now they have one that they can focus on, add new features to, and fix bugs on.
People, there's a difference between a local server and a listen server.
You can create a socket without having it accept external connections - in no way does it say that making an SSP world will let others in your server. You're reading something that isn't there.

Anyway, this thread has been derailed so hard ... If you want your 1.3 experience to be as amazing as your 1.2 experience you have to do ONE thing: Tell Mojang what GAMEPLAY FEATURES you want from SSP ported over to SMP. Okay? Please?
(Edit: also, read all previous posts and you shouldn't have any more questions.)
I didn't like the idea at first, but now that I think of it, and thinking of how much I wanna set up a server, it actually seems like a good idea.
And I really wish people would quit complaining, it's not like random people are gonna join your single player and reck the whole thing, you have to invite a person(s) so they can join it.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned it but the new architecture will probably have an option to close/open the world for visitors. Closed worlds would be exactly as SSP, nobody can join, you are alone and you don't require an internet connection (BTW you can have a server on a computer without internet now, just use localhost as the ip address and presto! a server that only you can join).
Open those ports in the menu and now your world can be visited by friends (I would assume the whitelist feature would still be accessible as well as limiting the number of players allowed for the new worlds) This may require a bit of knowledge to set up ports and whitelists but I would assume if you want it bad enough you will Google how to do it.
This way there will only be one codebase for bugfixes which means faster updates and easier code to work on for mods (combined with the upcoming modding api). This seems to be the dream update that should catapult Minecraft forward into a new world of faster updates, more mods that don't require as much work (both to write and to update since the mod api would allow mods to work for the forseeable future), and smoother gameplay.
Servers will still exist so you can go and hang out on a server, but now you can (with a bit of work) have your own little server based in your world to welcome friends to look around or even to move in!
I look forward to this update when it is completely fleshed out. And remember, weekly snapshots are merely beta releases of updates and therefore are pretty much expected to be buggy and in need of work. That is why we (read: Alpha and Beta purchasers) signed up to play the game.
To all the complainers-ever heard of MC Pocket Edition? Mojang is trying to make SSP work like PE, where both single player and a server are running. And remember, THIS IS A ****ING SNAPSHOT, NOT 1.3!
What this needs now is a "Server is Visible/Invisible" button, like PE.
Ladders in 1.1 were a test to see how well vines would work.
Mojang had no intent to keep ladders like that, just like now. I assume Mojang has no intent to "destroy Minecraft as we know it".
Are you sure? Official updates should NOT be used for "tests." Mojang is smart enough to know this, ever wondered why this snapshot isn't called 1.3?
This can work without the internet but the bow legs on my laptop and when i brake a block it also drops a bit later I really dont like this i like how 12w17a and before was.

As soon as the performance issues are fixed up, it's basically moving the logic from one place to another. It's buggy and slow because it's new and experimental. It'll get fixed. I don't imagine seeing too much extra overhead from this change.
honestly? i don't neccesarily like the idea anymore...i thought it was interesting but now i do not think the ssp smp cross is great. if it was optional and you could just play ssp like we did then i might sorta like the concept...maybe?but not this.
I have not tried the snapshot because of the single/multiplayer crossover, my computer cannot handle a server and I am scared to see what it does. I will certainly keep a 1.2.5 jar IF I even update. WHY MOJANG, WHY JEB, IT WAS MAKING SUCH PROGRESS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION!
mine computer really cant either but i get hardly no lag when playing on it, so TRY IT
I HATE THIS IDEA i mean this is the game i play when theres no internet and now ssp is going to smp which NEEDS INTERNET THIS SUCKS!!!
You should be able to get on without internet(if not SCREW THIS) so you could cut off internet to play singleplayer or choose to crossover by inviting people instead of letting anyone just come on over to grief your perfect world but there could be dedicated worlds that act like servers today so all in all, i totally want this for minecraft so i could involve my friends in my building projects or host my own server. But if it has to be online at all times then KILL IT WITH FIRE the idea that is.
This isn't worth it, you try to explain what is going on to the people who are raging, but they ignore you and are replaced by more people who are raging and don't read the previous posts.
They're doing it, all community games do it, they promise to release mod API, but they just release all these things instead, when they do release modding API everybody will think Mojang are their heroes.
Any please, leave the singleplayer-multiplayer converge an OPTION

doctorwhomod I don't follow the "Don't feed the trolls" rule. I feed them. I feed them so much that they get fat and die.

Leave singleplayer be too.
Single player sucks and is only good for mods. Having multiplayer turn into a singleplayer like experience will destroy this game!
