People, there's a difference between a local server and a listen server.
You can create a socket without having it accept external connections - in no way does it say that making an SSP world will let others in your server. You're reading something that isn't there.
Wait, this is confusing me. WHAT part of this game is being run on my computer and what part is being run somewhere else? If you are saying that my game is being improved by taking it off my computer to be run, how is it that it runs when my computer is off the net?
From my understanding of what's going on, at least, what's happening is when you play Minecraft with this snapshot, your computer makes what you can think of as a virtual server (in other words, just a hypothetical construct "server" on your computer - it doesn't actually physically exist somewhere out on the internet) and the stuff you see is your Minecraft game interacting with the world on that server.
The way it used to work (in single player at least) is your game would do all of the stuff involving maintaining the world - it literally WAS the world. Now the world is a separate entity on your computer, and the game itself only renders and interacts with it (which is sort of the way multiplayer works, except the world was out on the internet). One of the main differences is that with the new system you can easily allow other players to join by simply letting their Minecraft interact with the world over the internet.
I hope this made sense... it's a little weird to explain without being able to draw diagrams.

I have not tried the snapshot because of the single/multiplayer crossover, my computer cannot handle a server and I am scared to see what it does. I will certainly keep a 1.2.5 jar IF I even update. WHY MOJANG, WHY JEB, IT WAS MAKING SUCH PROGRESS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION!

weeeeeeeeeeee!!!!! I love the idea!!!!!! as soon as this is an actual update i will sure do this!(Note to complainers: All your bugs will surely be fixed by the time an actual release is given, and if it doesn't it's because you have unrealistic views for minecraft. aren't the producers trying to see what you want? tell them.)
I just don't think we should be complaining. This is just a basic idea. There are two far-fetched possibilities that people are thinking of. 1: Random noobs and greifers can join your game and this update will ruin Minecraft. 2: This update will be great, and will bring Minecraft to new heights. And the answer is somewhere in between. Honestly, I hate the idea, but I think it would be good if there was an option in the pause GUI, and it's off by default.
Guys who are complaining: SHUT UP.
You guys do know that you are complaining about a version of that game that is in development, It is ment to have glitches in it. I'm sure in the official version most of the things will be fixed. I'd hate to see Minecraft held back from its full potential because some idiots don't get the idea of what a snapshot is.
I haven't been through much of the game with this screenshot, but it still seems the same. Longer waiting times for going into worlds? That will be fine if my friends could join without Hamachi. Of course things like creative and pausing in single player mode still have to be fixed, but this is a screenshot where things like that are supposed to be there. It's about the basic idea, some extras will have to be put on later.
Okay, this entire thread needs to stop and actually think right now. For the people raging and using excessive caps lock against Mojang, calm down. But then, also, the people shouting at them need to cool off as well. The entire point of these updates is to share the common views of the community, and make it possible to beta-test the new features. Everyone is entitled to share their views on this, but some are just shouting. Shouting at Mojang, shouting at each other, whatever. I, personally can go either way on this, and wholeheartedly agree with those of us here who try to compromise. The crossover could easily be made into and option in the menu for creating the world. Then the people who like to pause the game and don't want all the bugs can play singleplayer the way it was. And yes, mods will take longer to adapt to the initial new update, but after that, they only need to make one version (SSP/SMP) instead of two (SSP and SMP). This update, either way, will make a huge difference in Minecraft.
Oh the irony. People can think logically when playing Minecraft and such, but they can't when it comes to other stuff. I don't get what all the commotion is about. I mean COME ON PEOPLE? Don't you think that Mojang would give you the choice to disable online? All it would take is another option, and some pointers (I program somewhat) to tell the internet to not run, and problem solved. Plus, even if you ARE online doesn't mean you have to let anybody else on. You can play all by your little lonesome if your heart so desires. Hope this helps calm everybody down. Any company, much less Mojang, would want to do something to lose money. If Mojang is smart enough to make this expansive of a virtual world, they are smart enough to know what the consumer does and doesn't want. AND they are combining multi player and single player for a reason. It let's them focus on ONE THING rather then 2, so they have more time to add in stuff that YOU GUYS WANT. They are doing this for them AND us.

As a minecraft lover, I'm ashamed to say that I don't enjoy this snap. I do think its awesome to easily setup a server, but a lot of us don't always want to play with OTHER people. And I mean a lot of people. I'm working on two new adventure maps and I'm a little frightened about complete strangers coming on to my PRIVATE minecraft world, and destroying everything. Some people aren't that good with computers, so they can't just roll it back, reload the world and whatnot. I do love minecraft and EVERYTHING they have. But this is just getting ridiculous. I won't say that this update is a COMPLETE waste. I mean less lag = Epic. But still, I need to work on my adv. maps ALONE. But as many other people said, this is not final. I don't exactly ENJOY the snapshot. But I'm not trying to whine about it.
Overall, if I had to give this a diamond, Gold ingot, or iron ingot. I would go with .

What are you talking about? It will be impossible for random people to log on your world and grief it without you knowing...
What's going on here is Mojang released a rough draft on what they want Minecraft to be, and the misinformed are raging because they think this snapshot is exactly what the future of Minecraft will be.

To all those people complaining about how the mods will break, MOD API! Remember?
They actually ARE free, but hosted servers aren't.
