... The posts in this thread make me simultaneously lol and cry. So here's my two cents:
All of you who are complaining "Zomg it's broken and laggy and doesn't work": ... Kindly shut up; you don't know anything.
SSP is just the SMP running "inside" Minecraft. There is extra code here and there to allow for silly things like pausing (which will eventually be added ... You realize this is a snapshot, where everything breaks and all the final features aren't there, right?) ...
However, SMP is just a totally different codebase that emulates all SSP states; the server also keeps state of the SSP world, and sends all the updates to the clients. Essentially with a server and a client, you have two copies of SSP running. This is because Notch, in Minecraft's creation, wasn't thinking or programming for SMP -- It was tacked on later. With this change, SSP just moves all the level simulation to a different "place" -- instead of local to your Minecraft client, it's now on a Minecraft server. (Edit: Just because it's a "server" doesn't mean you need Internet to play. It just means you need Internet to invite your friends.)
This update is "The Right Way™" to do a game. The client does nothing but render graphics and does simple computations, while the server does all the level state and simulation. The fact that you all are bitching now is because it doesn't work yet -- It's an experimental development snapshot. This is like saying Windows 7 sucked because the beta blue screened on you. ...
Mojang should not, and probably will not reverse this logic. This will indeed drastically change some mods -- Such as modloader. However, keep in mind this is also the release where Mojang is releasing the official mod API headed by the Bukkit team who dominated the entire SMP mod community ( mostly ). Yes, this will probably require a rewrite for the entire mod community, but we only have to write things once this time. No more (or not as many ) Forge and Spout hacks, and no separate versions of mods for SMP and SSP.
But I ask you, quit being a whiny four year old and saying "THIS SUCKS I HATE THIS CHANGE IT BACK" and simply visit the thread in the original post and calmly tell Mojang, "I want to be able to pause in SSP." or "I miss how the Endermen shook with rage and opened their mouths in SSP." -- I'm sure they plan on porting all the little subtle things in SSP that SMP players missed out on.
The most important thing to remember is: This is a dev build. It's not supposed to work properly, or well. In some communities, it's accepted to have a dev build that doesn't work at all! This is your time to get your bugs fixed and features requested. Make use of it. Mojang will not reverse this logic as this is the proper way to develop a multiplayer game of this type. Just think -- no more ghost TNT blocks and invisible walls. For real this time.
Isn't SSP survival SINGLE player? not survival single- and multi- player
Why cant the players CHOSE (like they can now) what mode they play! Some people like the singleness of being alone, it really adds to the game in my opinion. Now I'm done with my rant, good day.

Anyone else notise how the + isnt green (like people say) but its the circle, the + is white, not green
When I heard of this, I was absolutely thrilled, and wanted to buy Minecraft immediately (sue me for not having it bought yet). This is an amazing idea; client-side loading makes servers a lot less laggy; people in my SP world... Although I do think there should be an option to make your world public, it probabbly won't matter because it's LAN, which means no internet connection necessary, and only people in your network can join. It's going to be awesome.
All of you complaining have _no_ idea what this is actually doing.
1) For those of you saying this makes modding worse: wrong. This makes modding -easier-. By separating server logic, mods will only have to edit the server portion for mods to automatically work in single-player.
2) Single player is not "gone", it's simply a local server now. This is NOT a new thing - almost every game being made today does this already.
3) This means that there's no longer SSP vs SMP differences because they'll be the exact same thing.
4) It doesn't mean that it "needs internet" to play SSP. SSP will still be as single-player as it ever was.
Please, for the love of God, do some research before you start saying that this is going to hurt anything.
HEY PEOPLE! How about we wait and actually see what this is going to be like before we complain about it! It could be completely different from what you're thinking. If you don't like the update, backdate your MC and see if Mojang removes it.

Wait, this is confusing me. WHAT part of this game is being run on my computer and what part is being run somewhere else? If you are saying that my game is being improved by taking it off my computer to be run, how is it that it runs when my computer is off the net?
You make Singleplayer more like Multiplayer then turn around and make Multiplayer more like Singleplayer.
No, just no. This is a terrible way to allow players the ability to invite people to their singleplayer worlds.

Basicly Servers run faster because it operates more on the world your using now that the client is being treated like a server it would be a indirect way of optimizing the game

I like how they make SSP more like SMP, but making SMP like SSP is just stupid
I like this idea, to be honest. What I don't like is how broken the snapshot is. Yes, I know, it's a snapshot, but so many things are broken now - Enchanting, repairing tools, taming wolves, the End, the Nether, Creative Mode, pausing...
Why would Mojang make it so Singleplayer is run by a local server?
I definitely understand where they are going with this. It would be awesome to have friends just join in like in pocket edition, but I think they are doing it wrong for pc.
It would be better if instead of having singleplayer automatically be run as a server, have a button in the escape menu that says "host world".
That would probably be the best option unless they overhaul the server to run ALOT smoother like singleplayer as of now and prevent determined hackers to just join in and wreck your world (it could be possible)
But then again how would we connect to our friends world? Hamachi? A new Mojang Network?
But how would we control the players that can join in out worlds?
Would there be friends lists? (I think I remember dinnerbone or someone of the bukkit team hinting this.)
This raises a lot of questions, but I would like to see how Mojang pulls this one off.
Everyone in here that is complaining about mods that need to be updated. Please stop. Every game gets updated, and every games mods need to be updated with it. All mods will need to be rewritten when the mod API comes out anyways, so no point in complaining about it now.
I'm not much of a complainer, but the issue is that, for some people, it causes increased lag and, as I have found, creates more bugs. (However, I am sure Mojang will correct these problems.)
Exactly. So instead of coming here and complaining about test material, they need to shut their mouths and wait for the problems to get ironed out.
Well, Mojang should at least make some kind of poll that we choose between keeping Singleplayer or making SSP SMP merge.
There is no need for a poll. There is nothing wrong with this idea. Most of the people complaining on this thread have no idea what is really going on. Someone said something wrong, and now the entire community thinks the world is crashing down on them.
EDIT: Nvm, its only on the news page.

It's only a snapshot, you don't have to update to it :\
Also, since it's a snapshot they could always redo the things.
